Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA) invites qualified applicants to apply for a full-time, 12-month, professional-track Lecturer position at the University of Maryland, College Park.  This teaching faculty position is responsible for content, assessment, course development and student advising in the IAA’s Turfgrass Management program, as well as building industry relationships and collaborating with other educational programs to recruit students.  This person must demonstrate the teaching experience and academic and professional qualifications to provide effective leadership for the program and students.  

The IAA, a 60-credit academic certificate program in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, College Park, combines hands-on learning with traditional classroom education and online resources.  The IAA provides students with the entrepreneurial, management, and technical skills needed to successfully operate sustainable domestic agricultural enterprises including golf courses, sports fields, landscape companies, and farming operations. This is a renewable, professional track, 12-month appointment.  Continuing appointment will be based on performance and student enrollment.  The University of Maryland, College Park, MD, is a Land Grant institution located near suburban Washington, DC.

Responsibilities:
·       Teach 3-4 undergraduate courses per semester during the academic year.  Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the area of golf course and turfgrass management and may include such courses as  Introduction to Turfgrass Management, Insects of Ornamentals and Turfgrass, Diseases of Turfgrass and Ornamentals, Irrigation and Drainage Practices for Turf, Agronomic Principles for Golf Turf Management, Business Management Practices of Turf Facilities, and others that the person may develop
·       Develop hybrid delivery methods
·       Coordinate with IAA Advisors and Director to advance and promote the program
·       Advise and mentor IAA students and develop industry connections
·       Participate in department decision-making, strategic planning, and recruitment
·       Continuously develop and update curriculum and instructional materials, and integrate assessment activities and best teaching practices into classes
·       Prepare students for collegiate competitions
Qualifications:
Required–
·       Master's degree in turfgrass science, plant science, agronomy, horticulture, or related discipline.
·       Two years teaching/training experience, preferably at the post-secondary level.
·       The key person will demonstrate excellence in teaching.
Preferences–
·       Experience in golf course or sports turf management.
·       Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish are a plus

Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution Data Analyst Intern

Job Title: Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution Data Analyst Intern

Job Summary: The successful candidate will be employed by the University of Maryland’s Department of Environmental Science and Technology, and will work directly with the Nonpoint Source Data Analyst at the Chesapeake Bay Program Office in Annapolis, Maryland. The U.S. EPA’s Chesapeake Bay Program leads a multi-organization partnership that is in the process of updating water quality modeling tools to estimate how nutrient runoff from agricultural land has changed over the last three decades.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will contribute to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s research efforts through the following tasks:
1)    Compile existing data pertaining to agricultural crop and animal production across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
2)    Analyze data for potential use in water quality modeling tools.
3)    Produce graphics showing trends in data through time.
4)    Prepare reports and present findings.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must be currently enrolled at the University of Maryland or recently graduated, and should have knowledge of the following subjects and data analysis tools:
1) Ability to master statistical analysis techniques.
2)    Experience summarizing data and findings from published, peer-reviewed literature.
3)    Basic understanding of ecological systems with emphasis on agricultural crop and animal production management.
4)    Basic understanding of soil science as it pertains to ecological systems and crop and animal production.
5)    Experience using Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
6)    Knowledge and experience using geographic information systems such as ArcGIS is not necessary, but is preferable.  

Physical Demands: The positions will require computer and desk work.

Taking class at community college

Many of UMD's most challenging classes (orgo, calc, physics) may be taken at a community college if you get the College of AGNR's permission. These are the steps to ask for permission:

Good oral and written communication skills are required, and extensive experience in technical writing is desirable.

POSITION SUMMARY

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a college degree.

Must demonstrate excellent communication writing skills, attention to detail, organizational skills and exceptional customer service.

Must be proficient with spreadsheet, word processing, database, and graphic presentation software programs and have the ability to become proficient with proprietary software needed for the performance of the essential functions of the position. Experience with Photoshop and InDesign a plus.

Must be proficient with the operation of commonly used office machines.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that fulfills the requirements of the position will be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Training in secretarial, clerical, or related field and additional experience is preferred. Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute. A strong interest in science, wildlife management, ecology, biological science and 1 year of experience is also preferred.
