AGNR Peer Mentors

AGNR Peer Mentor Job Description

Title:  AGNR Peer Mentor
Responsibilities:   The main responsibility of AGNR Peer Mentors is to assist AGNR undergraduate students with everyday campus issues, such as advising, registration, and more.   During office hours, you will have walk-in appointments with students in the college.  You will help them become familiar with registration procedures (Testudo), assist them with preparation of their 4-year academic plan, and explain their progress toward degree benchmarks.  You will work with students in subsequent semesters to pre-select courses and build tentative schedules, print academic audits, and otherwise prepare for their regular faculty advising appointments.  You may be asked to refer students to various campus services (e.g. Learning Assistance, Career Center, or tutoring services).   Peer Mentors will assist the AGNR Academic Programs Office with other tasks associated with student services and support, such as answering phones, filing records and assisting individuals who walk into the main office.   Peer Mentors may also serve as teaching assistants for UNIV100 during the fall semester.  
Qualifications:  
a) 45- 65 cumulative credits (excluding AP) with at least 2 semesters enrolled in an AGNR major   
b) GPA of 3.0 or higher and c) enrolled as a full-time student in AGNR.  Additionally, the Mentors seek applicants who are "engaged" in one or more other aspects of university life; (study abroad, research, internships, organizations, sports) we want students who know how to manage time and make the best use of all that UMD has to offer!

Compensation:  You will be paid for 4 hours/week each term.  You will also find this experience immensely satisfying as you help new students find their way in our large university.  You will develop leadership skills as you contribute to the building of a course syllabus and participate actively in the teaching program.  You will establish new relationships with both students and faculty/administrators in the college (good source of reference letters when you are ready to apply for graduate school, professional school, or that first job).  The service will stand out on your resume. 
Date Available: The position begins August 28, with a training session approximately 1 week prior.

Summer 2017 Bats Internship

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Working with the Center’s Executive Director to provide leadership in executing the Center’s mission to “Provide leadership to promote environmentally sound and economically viable agriculture and forestry as Maryland’s preferred land use through research, outreach and collaboration.  Established in 1999 the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology is a part of University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The Center is headquartered at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, Maryland.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership in executing assigned strategic initiatives of the Board and Dean approved strategic plan. Catalyzing collaboration among a broad diversity of constituents and finding meaningful consensus that leads to measurable change in agronomy, agronomy policy, and/or natural resource management. Crafting solutions that support forestry and farming needs and enhancing Maryland’s natural resources especially the Chesapeake Bay. Development of a multiyear plan including budget and staff activity plans. Supervision of staff and contracted employees.  

  • Building relationships with local and state government officials especially related to the Chesapeake Bay Program. Proactive support of state and federal government efforts that support farming and forestry and natural resources management in Maryland. Support successful state initiatives by supporting Watershed Implementation Plan at local and state levels.

  • Leading the fundraising goals of the Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology. Working with a Board committee and the Executive Director to meet fundraising goals for the Center. Developing donors and asking for support directly. Managing fundraising and grant award recordkeeping and collaboration with the College Park Foundation. Finding and applying for grants that provide needed resources for strategic initiatives. Oversee and supervise grant reporting to foundations and other entities for the University of Maryland System Foundation.

  • Oversight of outreach and engagement activities.  Supervision of staff at the Hughes Center to ensure successful implementation of workshops, meetings, and communications activities.  Oversee request for proposal process by engaging with research professionals at University of Maryland and with the Board of Directors at the Hughes Center.


Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited university.

Five years’ experience working with government representatives and agricultural community.  Experience facilitating and implementing meetings that result in consensus outcomes.  Experience with Extension, NGOs, educational institutions and local government leaders around implementation of WIPs. Proficiency in interpersonal skills and communication through digital, print and verbal means.  Standard office skills including computer applications. Detailed understanding of budgeting and reporting around grants and events. Must be willing and able to work occasional weekends and evenings.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Operational leadership in implementing strategic priorities that include research, policy,     outreach, and community engagement.
  • Measures performance of organizational functions.
  • Management and leadership of staff and student fellows.
  • Technical writing for grants and grant/reporting.
  • Seek opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of all internal operations.
  • Manage technology, including ongoing maintenance and updating of fundraising software.
  • Strengthen relationships with other constituents especially government agencies.
  • Along with the Executive Director, provide staff support and guidance to the Board of Directors and serve as staff liaison to relevant subcommittees of the Board.
  • Provide programmatic input to the Executive Director in strategic planning.
  • Represent the Hughes Center at private and public functions as needed.
  • Team player with superior consensus building and critical thinking.
  • Skills should include demonstrated leadership ability, problem solving, data analysis, personnel management, and strong interpersonal skills.

Student Administrative Assistant Position in ENST office

MBSS Internships

The selected candidate will serve as a member of a field sampling crew to collect fish, herpetofauna, crayfish, mussel, and physical habitat data as part of the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) and participate in other field studies as assigned.  Primary duties include conducting backpack electrofishing, identifying captured organisms, measuring stream flow, and assisting with other stream physical habitat assessments.  This position is based in Annapolis, MD. 

The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting a lead biologist with water quality monitoring activities, including collecting storm loading data, routine monitoring and continuous monitoring in the western portion of Maryland.  Their primary duties will include collecting and processing water quality samples, collecting water quality data using instrumentation, assisting with Lake/Shoreline physical habitat assessments and calibrating water quality monitoring equipment.  There will also be opportunities to assist with submerged aquatic vegetation surveys, aquatic invasive species projects, as well as measuring stream flow, data entry and GIS mapping.  The work will be done in creeks and rivers of Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties, in addition to Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County.  The position is based in Swanton, MD at Deep Creek Lake State Park.

 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND THE EARTH OPTIMISM SUMMIT

The Smithsonian Institution is hosting the inaugural Earth Optimism SummitApril 21-23, in Washington DC. The Summit will be a master class in saving the planet, in effect a 25-hour intensive course in conservation success. We will gather over 150 speakers and 1000 thought leaders, scientists, artists, environmentalists, and civic and business leaders from around the world, as well as students and young professionals, to share stories of what’s working in conservation. It is hard to imagine a better way for a young change maker to spend three days. 

Thanks to the recent generosity of donors, the Smithsonian Institution is now able to offer 200 awards for exceptional students to attend. From science and conservation to journalism, international relations, business and the arts we are looking for student leaders who are motivated to make positive change for the planet! 

The awards are on a first-come/first serve basis, so reply as soon as possible with names and email addresses of up to 10 students to earthoptimism@si.edu. Please note that because of the value and scarcity of awards relative to demand, the students chosen should commit to attending the summit in its entirety (that is, Friday morning through Sunday mid-day) to experience the breadth and depth of the content and networking opportunities being offered.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This position is located at the University of Maryland Extension office in Carroll County (Westminster), Maryland. The Extension Educator is responsible for organizing, developing, implementing and evaluating educational programs for youth, families and communities working through volunteers and youth development agencies to provide experiential learning opportunities for youth, leading to the development of life skills for youth. The educator is also responsible for developing an active, ongoing recruitment campaign to involve new volunteers and youth. As a tenure track faculty member, the Educator will be responsible for providing leadership to develop focused youth development programs in cooperation with colleagues in the Northern Maryland Cluster. The faculty member will be on track for tenure and promotion to a higher rank in accordance with University policy and UME tenure guidelines within a timeframe defined.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement and evaluate a county focused 4-H youth development program in cooperation with colleagues in a programmatic cluster. Facilitate the development of leadership, social and life skills, using research-based methods and materials, to achieve an increase in knowledge, skills and desirable behaviors and outcomes that align with the UME Strategic Plan and 4-H Program Priorities.
  • Coordinate and deliver experiential learning programs for a wide range of disciplines in areas aligning with the 4-H mission mandates of science, health and citizenship.
  • Educate youth and adult volunteers on subject matter concepts.
  • Manage and expand the county’s 4-H club and Out of School Time programs and capacity. Conduct needs assessments, outreach and marketing to reach diverse audiences as well as promote inclusivity of all youth.
  • Provide leadership, coordination and support for the UME adult volunteer management system, including recruitment, screening and background check requirements, training, management and recognition of youth and adult volunteers.
  • Cultivate good working relationships with community collaborators and partners to benefit youth. Promote positive public relations with stakeholders and the community.
  • Increase resources through grants, local funding sources, collaborative and other funding proposals to support and expand 4-H youth development programs.
  • Supervise full and part time staff dedicated to supporting the 4-H Youth Development Program.
  • Coordinate programmatic direction in concert with non-tenured faculty position(s) and staff.
  • Perform teaching, scholarship and service requirements of a faculty member of the University of Maryland. This is a tenure track position requiring documented accomplishments in the areas of research, teaching, and service.

Qualifications:
Required–
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience working with youth groups and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated teaching and leadership ability.
  • Good communication and computer skills.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, with some evenings and weekends, and to travel within assigned county, administrative cluster, and state.
  • Personal transportation and valid driver’s license.
  • This position is subject to a Criminal History Record Check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion and clearance of the Criminal History Record Check.

  • Preferred education emphasis is in youth or child development, education, life science or related field or a similar degree emphasis in undergraduate work.

  • Experience with the 4-H youth development program.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Nature of the Position: This position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds. The ability to express or exchange ideas vocally is important, as well as the ability to hear and perceive information at normal spoken work levels.
  • Physical Demands: A routine part of this position’s responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching/event locations, including loading and unloading the vehicle. The employee will frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and tear-down of displays, tables, and chairs would be necessary at many teaching sites.
  • Environmental: Team driven, office environment of professional character, competence, and collaboration. Deadline driven in terms of program planning and reporting. This position requires the employee to work outdoors at certain times of the year, especially during the time of annual fair, 4-H residential or day camps and youth recreation activities. This may occur during very hot and/or inclement weather.
  • Visual Acuity: Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data and presentations.
