CKC Urban Farmer Internship

The CKC Urban Farmer Internship is designed for high school and college students seeking SSL hours, college credit, or a small stipend. 

Interns are expected to dedicate 4 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks.

  • Summer internship runs Jun 9 - Sep 1, 2019
  • Fall internship runs Sep 1 - Nov 10, 2019
At the end of this internship, you will know how to compost using a 3-bin system, start and care for seedlings, operate a drip irrigation system, package and transport produce for market, and so much more.

PhD Research Assistantship – Winter Bat Activity and Habitat Relationships – University of Georgia

Location: Athens, Georgia

Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated graduate student to investigate landscape-level influences on winter bat activity and habitat relationships on managed forest lands of the southeastern Coastal Plain. The overall goal of the research is to develop widely-applicable predictive models of winter bat community assemblages and generalized habitat associations based on landscape characteristics in managed forest systems. Primary duties will include assessing bat habitat relationships and activity using acoustic sampling, mist netting, and habitat characterization in the field and using GIS. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop additional research questions related to winter bat ecology.

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (http://www.warnell.uga.edu/) has >70 faculty working in diverse fields and provides exemplary training of students in the fields of fisheries, forestry, natural resource management, recreation and tourism, wildlife. The School has >23,000 acres in the state for research, teaching, and service activities, including the 700-acre Whitehall Forest near campus.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have an M.S. in wildlife biology or closely related field, strong academic credentials, and previous experience working with bats. Desirable skills and experience include acoustic field sampling and call identification; mist netting and bat identification; proficiency using GPS and GIS; and knowledge of statistical modeling. Candidates must have a strong work ethic and the ability to successfully supervise field technicians. Field work will involve traveling away from campus for extended periods.


Stipend: $22,645/year plus full tuition waiver for 4 years

Part-Time Positions-Patapsco Heritage Greenway

PHG is hiring seasonal event assistants for our Environmental Stewardship Program!
Are you passionate about the environment? Do you love being outside and working with volunteers? The Patapsco Heritage Greenway, Inc. (PHG) is recruiting seasonal part-time program assistants to help manage volunteers and run watershed stewardship activities including stream cleanups, invasive species removals, tree plantings, and educational activities. Each year, PHG manages over 1000 enthusiastic volunteers in activities designed to protect and restore the Patapsco watershed. Seasonal activities are held predominantly during spring and fall weekends and may require occasional weekday or summer engagement. Activities occur at different sites throughout the Patapsco River Valley. Required documentation or correspondence for each activity may be conducted on site, home and/or at the PHG office. Event Assistant

Part time/Seasonal, Non-Exempt, 5-15 hours per week in season (days per week, specific hours TBD)

Description: With the coordination of the Program Manager and Program Coordinator, staff stream cleanups, invasive plant removals, tree plantings, tree maintenance and other programs. Event Assistants may also be required to assist or lead workshops and education programs. Weekends and some weekdays and/or evenings required. Compensation: $15 per hour commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrated interest and experience with environmental stewardship and/or fieldwork. Motivated, flexible, confident, problem solver with an ability to work on a team.

 Skills:

  • Candidates with environmental stewardship, education, and/or field experience.
  • Bi-lingual candidates.
  • Candidates with experience leading volunteers and a demonstrated ability to interact positively with participants of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Candidates with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Candidates with good judgment, the ability to make timely and sound decisions, and confidence in public speaking and directing volunteers.
  • Candidates with access to email or a phone to receive updates, communicate with the environmental team, and take and share photographs.
  • Candidates with the ability to lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Candidates with a driver’s license to help transport equipment and materials as needed.
  • Candidates with certification in basic first aid and CPR.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with pre-event work; including supplies preparation and transportation to site.
  • Assist with event work; including registration of volunteers, supervision and leading of volunteers, help volunteers with specific hands-on tasks specific to that event, help staff collect data, photographs, and other documents as needed.
  • Assist with post-event work; including help clean and store equipment, upload photos and other data, complete reports and other paperwork as needed.
  • Represent the organization at educational events.
  • Speak articulately about organization goals.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

$300,000 in Grants!-University Sustainability Fund

For faculty, staff and students!

We are excited to inform you that the University Sustainability Fund has approximately $300,000 available this year for projects that promote environmental sustainability and positively impact the student experience at University of Maryland.

Applications are now being accepted for 2019-2020 projects. The priority deadline for applications is October 15 with a final deadline of January 15. Apply now.

More than $2 million has been granted to 137 sustainability projects since 2011 including the Biowall at McKeldin Library, Terp Farm, the Sphagnum Moss Water Treatment System at Eppley Recreation Center, the Partnership for Action Learning in Sustainability (PALS), lighting upgrades, rain gardens, research projects, and many more. Learn more about last year's grant recipients.

The Fund allocates money to projects that increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency of our campus facilities, reduce the amount of waste created and material resources used on campus, encourage sustainable behaviors, and integrate sustainability into teaching, research, and service at the university. We encourage projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or have other measurable environmental benefits. Grants are supported by student fees and administered through the University Sustainability Council.

At our office conveniently located on Route 1, students can take advantage of diverse openings in office management & administration, outdoor education, political environmental advocacy, communications & marketing, web design, community organizing, event planning, and policy research.

Our interns become part of the office team and are essential to accomplishing many of the Chapter’s environmental conservation goals. Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay watershed requires committed, diverse, passionate individuals and the Chesapeake Research Consortium (CRC) seeks such an individual for a three-year appointment to provide support to the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) partnership’s Foster Chesapeake Stewardship Goal Implementation Team. 

Environmental Management Staffer Responsibilities The candidate selected for this position will be involved in a broad range of goal team activities associated with advancing the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement goals listed above. This will include: organization and support of a variety of meetings; coordinating communication with goal team and work group membership; tracking team action items; coordinating and/or working on specific projects; and carrying out research and synthesis activities, including reporting on performance indicators. 
The candidate selected will be a key point of contact for communicating with multiple partnerships, and their memberships, engaged in carrying out the goal team’s agenda. The candidate selected will also support the goal team’s involvement in the Chesapeake Bay 
Program’s Strategy Review System process to track progress toward achieving Chesapeake Bay restoration goals and outcomes, including coordinating partnership reviews and consolidating feedback. 
The selected candidate will work as a CRC employee at the U.S. EPA's Chesapeake Bay Program Office located in Annapolis, Maryland. 
Desired Skills and Qualifications The ideal candidate for the position would have the following background and qualifications: 
A Bachelor’s degree in natural resources (biology, ecology, etc.) or environmental science, studies, management, education, or policy; land use/community planning; or other relevant area of study. 
Experience with engaging state and/or federal agencies, watershed organizations, local governments, school systems, and/or land trusts and conservation organizations to interpret, educate about, and/or develop solutions for environmental issues. 
Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse partners and stakeholders as part of interdisciplinary teams representing a variety of interests in an environment meant to build consensus around large scale conservation needs and goals. 
Experience in independently planning meetings, developing agendas, drafting concise meeting minutes, and tracking action items. 
Ability to research various issues and develop summaries, findings and options for consideration. 
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with partners at all levels of program activities with diplomacy. 
Experience in developing and delivering briefing, educational and/or outreach materials for government representatives, community leaders, and/or environmental educators.

Salary and Benefits The annual salary is $41,648 and a competitive vacation and benefits package is included for the three-year position.
