Geologist II Job Announcement

The Maryland Geological Survey is searching for a candidate who will study the groundwater resources of Maryland.  We are looking for an early career candidate who has either at least one year of experience performing hydrogeological studies or a master's degree in hydrology.  The Maryland Geological Survey is a State government organization of 17 scientific staff and 2 support staff.  We have a great diversity of projects from ocean sand resources mapping to traditional geologic mapping to mineral mapping, and of course, for this position groundwater quantity and quality mapping and analysis.

The main purpose of this position is to assist in hydrogeological and hydrological studies of the groundwater and surface-water resources of the State. Duties will include field and office work, and may include but are not limited to measuring water levels in wells, monitoring test drilling, collecting and describing drill cuttings and cores, conducting and analyzing aquifer tests, inventorying wells, collecting water samples, analyzing water-quality, water-level, and other hydrogeological data, working with GIS applications, digitizing and scanning data, compiling tables and plots of groundwater levels and water quality, and assisting in the production of reports, pamphlets, and brochures for both technical and non-technical audiences. The position involves interacting with technical professionals at local, state, and federal agencies as well as the public. Field work often requires travel throughout the State and may require the ability to lift heavy equipment (exceeding 50 pounds).

The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 600,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes a system of 14 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments.

What We Offer To Our Volunteers

The 2020 Harvard Forest Summer Research Program is now accepting applications from a diverse group of undergraduate students to join an immersive research experience.
This 11-week paid residential internship (May 18 - July 31, 2020) is located at Harvard’s world-class ecological research hub in Petersham, Massachusetts.

Position Announcement: Pennsylvania Agricultural Program Manager

Job Description:
This position will work with the Pennsylvania State Director and office on a wide range of water quality improvement projects focused on agricultural conservation, riparian and in-stream conservation, drinking water protection, and more. The successful candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and a basic understanding of water quality and land use issues affecting the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. The ability to form strong relationships and work in partnership with a variety of audiences is essential. The Pennsylvania Agricultural Program Manager will interact often with farmers, other landowners and local residents, and members of the business community, local government, and other nonprofits. This position will involve extensive fieldwork and outreach, including meeting with landowners to conducting field assessments and will thus require field-savviness. Agricultural programs will be a core focus for this position, specifically the coordination of the Turkey Hill Clean Water Partnership, and candidates with skills and field experience in conservation agriculture will be prioritized. Strong candidates will also have experience in partnership coordination. 
The successful candidate will show creativity in generating new ideas and problem-solving, as well as project management, leadership, and facilitation skills. The demonstrated ability to facilitate the engagement of a diversity of partners and generate consensus on goals and project ideas is a plus.While the successful candidate will immediately be stepping into existing programs, we are seeking an applicant who can develop creative, innovative solutions, and programs of their own in time.
Specific Duties of the Position:
  • Build and Manage relationships with farmers, ag consultants, ag contractors, federal and state agencies, conservation districts etc 
  • Manage agricultural projects budgets, workloads and reporting duties
  • Lead and collaborate on securing project funding through state, federal, and other grants for PA agricultural projects
  • In cooperation with the PA State Director, manage office staff and partners associated with projects to ensure objectives, goals, workloads and reporting duties
  • Gather and synthesize data and information as needed to build new programs and projects, ensure successful results, and communicate outcomes of work 
  • Edit and assist in writing grant proposals, newsletter articles, and project reports
  • Manage office administrative tasks and other tasks as assigned
  • Develop and deliver presentations and workshops to the general public

Summary

This position is located in the Northeast Region, Field Operations Office in Frederick, Maryland. The incumbent will be responsible for providing assistance to the Soil and Water Conservation District. The incumbent will also work with landowners to apply and maintain a number of conservation practices and review of financial assistance requests under the provision of federal, state, and possibly agriculture programs.

Responsibilities

  •  Assists in conducting field investigations, surveys, and assembly of data needed in the development of conservation practices for structural solutions to problems with water quality, erosion, drainage, and irrigation.
  •  Assists the District Conservationist in developing large area resource conservation plans; compiles resource information, prepares maps; and interprets soil survey data for use in conservation planning.
  • Provides planning information to local government, district personnel, rural and community residents, and other entities for the development other natural resources projects such as flood control projects, paths, trail ways, and wildlife habitats.

My name is Kristina Medero and I am the Health Programs Director for One Heart Source. I am reaching out to share an opportunity for you and your students to engage in our service learning Health Development Program in Cape Town, South Africa. As a growing part of our G.I.F.T.E.D. (Greatness Initiative For Township Educational Development) community project, this experience is designed for university undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18-25 who are pursuing a career in health-related fields. The purpose of the OHS Health Development program is to democratize healthy living, or increase access to healthy choices, by mentoring our G.I.F.T.E.D. students using educational health interventions. Those selected to be part of the OHS Health Development team will engage with various levels of the local community on pressing issues related to community health. These engagements include fieldwork, visitation to local institutions, and seminars aimed at contextualizing participants' understanding of local determinants of health to promote effective mentorship.

Main Purpose Of Job

The main purpose of this position is to lead and provide technical support for natural resource survey projects to include logistical and administrative support, data entry and field preparation work for the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR). The position requires a motivated, organized individual who must be able to work independently to collect field data through the monitoring of experimental sites and survey work. This includes collecting basic water quality parameters using handheld multimeter devices, operating of boats and equipment, conducting inventories of fish populations, capturing and measuring fish species of interest, conducting avian monitoring, including nest box fate and call back surveys, and maintenance of bird nesting boxes, maintaining records and data entry, assisting with outreach and communication, maintaining field and laboratory equipment and performing other duties as assigned. 
The natural resources technician will also support field logistics and data collection for the Resiliency through Restoration shoreline monitoring effort. They will assist in managing the equipment and collecting field observations of emergent and/or submerged aquatic vegetation, shoreline and marsh elevation (using survey equipment), sediment characterization and wildlife activity. The technician may also assist in data entry, QA/QC and database management related to this project.  
Employee will receive moderate supervision from a Natural Resources Biologist, Environmental Specialist or other designated administrator. The work may require lifting or carrying heavy objects or equipment weighing over twenty-five pounds. The incumbent will be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Some aspects of the work, such as the handling of wildlife and working aboard a boat are considered hazardous. The employee may be required to wear protective clothing and equipment when the need arises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.
Experience: Two years of experience in technical biological work in the field of natural resources management.
