Merav Ben David is a prodigious climate scientist running for the US Senate in Wyoming. Her research was used to force Exxon and BP to pay fines after their respective oil spills in 1989 and 2010. Merav would be the first scientist in the senate since 1982, as well as the first woman scientist and the first climate scientist ever elected to the senate. She’s running on a smart, cohesive, progressive platform

Our staff includes wildlife biologists and former Warren and Clinton staffers! We are looking for summer interns to strengthen our team at least till the primary (August 18) and likely

through the general (November 3). 

Specifically, we’re looking for the following:

Design intern: You know how to design a good looking poster / flyer / postcard / banner / infographic. If you’re applying for the design position, send a portfolio of at least three designs you’ve made.

News and Social Media Intern: You are a news junkie who can put together social media content that elicits instant engagement. If you’re applying for the news and social media position, include your social handles or those you’ve managed in the past.

Policy Intern: You love to research any (political) topic and turn your research into policy recommendations

Organizing intern: You know how to turn 5 postcard writers into 20 phone bankers into 200 door knockers! Ideally, you have friends/connections all around Wyoming.

Scheduler: You are the most organized person you know, and you love helping other people stay

organized and on top of their priorities.

Internship Description: This is a unique opportunity to play an important role in international science, working as a team member on a research project focused on plant biodiversity and the utilization of plant material for medical use. You will be working with medical and environmental scientists at the University of Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and with the Washington DC-based NGO, Friends of the Congo. This virtual internship will rely on close e-mail interaction and communication in French with experienced Congolese research physicians and scientists; Google Translate provides an easy to use platform for effortless translation, and is the norm for doing international science—you will surely enjoy the experience! Dr Edward Landa of UMD-ENST will serve in an on-campus, liaison role during the internship. A highly varied set of assignments, including literature review, online research, database entry, preparation of GIS maps and story maps, PowerPoint presentations, and social media outreach. EPA Environmental Risk and Health Outcomes Fellowship

A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Public Health Environmental Assessment (CPHEA), Public Health, and Integrated Toxicology Division (PHITD) located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Ward-Caviness lab at the Clinical Research Branch is devoted to an intimate understanding of the link between environmental exposures and disease as well as the underlying molecular mechanisms that may mediate exposure-related effects and/or increase exposure sensitivity.

There is a research training opportunity available in this lab for a motivated postdoc with broad, cross-disciplinary interests. The research participant would primarily be involved with the analysis of electronic medical records extracted from a large electronic health record database. The research participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the analysis of vital data, hospitalizations, and disease development as reflected in the electronic medical record and the linkage of this data to environmental exposures to determine the environmental determinants of health and wellness. This research project also entails understanding various clinical and social factors which may mediate or modify any associations from including medications, the built environment, and social determinants of health.

EPA Analysis of Ecosystem Services at Cleanup Sites Internship

A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER), Technical Support Coordination Division (TSCD) located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The purpose of this research is to provide contaminated site project managers a basic understanding of ecosystem services (ES) and provide guidelines for consideration of ES at cleanup sites, including to improve ES for potential site reuse. An important component of this research involves a retrospective analysis of two selected cleanup sites where remediation/restoration actions have occurred. Here the effort will focus on: 1) developing and presenting a retrospective analysis of Ecosystem Services (ES) and the remedial Best Management Practices (BMPs) employed; 2) drawing conclusions about the changes in ES (as a result of remediation), and the potential for improving ES for site reuse; and 3) describing the lessons learned from this exercise as it applies to providing generalizable guidelines for consideration of ES at contaminated sites.

The research participant will collaborate with the mentor and other scientists, including regional scientists knowledgeable about the cleanup sites, to assemble necessary data and analyze it in terms of ES produced. Secondary data will need to be retrieved from a variety of sources for the periods prior to and after remediation to document the changes in ES as a result of remediation. The research participant will utilize the EPA Final Ecosystem Goods and Services (FEGS) tool to classify the appropriate ES, and a number of established tools to analyze them. Through literature research and conversations with experts, the use of BMPs for improving ES for site reuse will also be explored.

EPA Fate and Transformation of Metals in the Environment Fellowship

A research opportunity is available at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER), Land Remediation and Technology Division (LRTD) located in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The primary focus of the research will be on environmental transformations of metals that affect their transport and toxicity along with remediation of metal-contaminated sites. This research project will develop a study of pyrite oxidation to determine how much it affects groundwater quality and the use of sulfate-reducing bioreactors in the remediation of mining-impacted water. Secondary focus of this research project will be on the transformation of engineered nanomaterials that are released to the environment and remediation of contaminated sites.

Internship Positions - Environmental Crimes Section, U.S. Department of Justice

About the Office: The Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is seeking three undergraduate student interns for its Environmental Crimes Section in Washington, DC, for the Fall of 2020.

The Environmental Crimes Section is responsible for prosecuting individuals and corporations that have violated laws designed to protect the environment and/or unlawfully covered up those violations. It is at the forefront in changing industry and public awareness to recognize that environmental violations are serious infractions that transgress basic interests and values. The Section works closely with criminal investigators for the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other law enforcement agencies in prosecuting criminal violations of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as well as other federal statutes. In addition, the Section prosecutes criminal cases under a number of federal wildlife laws, including the Lacey Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Endangered Species Act. These cases, handled in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries Enforcement (National Marine Fisheries Service), involve smuggling and illegal trafficking in protected wildlife, illegal take of protected species, and hunting offenses.
