Career Courses for Spring

The University Career Center offers two 1-credit career courses, EDCP108i and PSYC123, designed to support students in exploring career options, searching for internships or jobs, and planning their next steps after graduation.

EDCP 108i: Academic Transitions to Internships is a 7-week (half-semester) course specifically recommended for students who have not yet experienced an internship and are actively seeking one. This one-credit, online asynchronous course guides students through essential exploratory and preparation activities, including:

• Understanding the components of an internship
• Increasing knowledge about an intended career field
• Developing a resume and cover letter
• Identifying potential internship sites
• Introducing interviewing and networking skills

Through this course, students gain a comprehensive experience in the internship search process. Additionally, students have opportunities for synchronous activities with the instructor and career professionals, such as mock interviews, resume reviews, and group meetings.

Please note: This course is only available to students with fewer than 105 cumulative credits.

PSYC 123: The Psychology of Getting Hired introduces students to the science behind the hiring process and equips students with strategies to apply with a competitive edge. This one-credit, online asynchronous course guides students through six modules, featuring activities designed to:

• Identify strengths, interests, and professional development goals
• Learn to use Handshake to find internships and professional positions
• Develop a high-quality professional resume
• Establish an effective professional social media presence and network
• Practice and refine crucial interview skills
• Create a career development plan

Two significant activities—a resume review with University Career Center staff, an employer, or an alumnus, and a mock interview with volunteer professionals—are conducted live via Zoom.

The Botstiber Institute for Wildlife Fertility Control (BIWFC) is dedicated to advancing the science and practice of humane wildlife management through fertility control. By convening experts, supporting research, and engaging with practitioners, policymakers, and the public, the Institute seeks to expand awareness and adoption of wildlife fertility control as a viable and sustainable tool for wildlife management.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to serve as Managing Director of the BIWFC. Reporting to the Foundation Administrator and Deputy Administrator, the Managing Director will play a pivotal role in guiding the Institute’s vision, programs, and partnerships. PhD Opportunity – Bat Functional Morphology & Biomechanics (Fall 2026, University of Tennessee)

PhD Position in Bat Functional Morphology and Biomechanics – University of Tennessee, Knoxville

 

The Evolutionary Biomechanics Lab led by Dr. Michael Granatosky (Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee) is recruiting PhD students to begin in Fall 2026. Our lab investigates the evolution of animal locomotion, focusing on how species meet novel biomechanical challenges. Current projects examine the evolution of neuromuscular control systems, the links between musculoskeletal anatomy and performance, and how animals adapt behaviorally and mechanically following limb loss.

 

For this position, we are particularly seeking students interested in the evolution of terrestrial locomotion in bats.

 

This project will integrate comparative and experimental approaches to test whether adaptations for quadrupedal agility in bats come at an energetic cost to flight. Students will have opportunities to combine metabolic measurements, high-speed videography, electromyography, force plate analysis, and morphometric dissections across a range of species, including fieldwork in Brazil, where bat diversity is exceptional.

 

Students in the lab receive broad, hands-on training in functional and anatomical biomechanics, and participate in both independent and team-based research. Our group emphasizes mentorship, collaboration, and professional development in an inclusive environment.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility. In the last nine years, 40 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships!
