Description: The intern will support the drafting of the Natural Capital Protocol for the Oceans, a framework designed to streamline the inclusion of ‘marine natural capital’ – natural resources of our coasts and oceans – into business decision making. Building from the Natural Capital Protocol released in July 2016, the Natural Capital Protocol for the Oceans will provide a standardized framework that incorporates the unique value chains of ocean goods and services, and the special characteristics of ocean resources, allowing ocean-based businesses and initiatives to identify, measure and value their impacts and dependencies on marine natural capital and to make decisions accordingly. In addition, the intern will support natural capital accounting related data, literature and information gathering.
Duties:
The intern will support the draft preparation of the Natural Capital Protocol for the Oceans on several aspects (e.g., frame, scope, measure and value, apply) which will be written based on technical expertise, but for a business user, and to be implemented by sustainability teams. Specific tasks include:
- Review scientific knowledge, synthesizing technical information in terms of methods and tools, data availability, etc., and providing minimal guidance on how to apply the framework for some identified needs.
- Develop case studies documenting experiences on natural capital assessment for several sectors, included, but not limited to living resources; shipping and transportation; cultural services and tourism; energy and extraction; marine engineering;
- Liaison with partners and compile contributions of others in the team, editing/copy editing as needed. The intern will also prepare communication materials, organize conference calls, webinars and engage.
- Support natural capital accounting projects with reviewing/organizing existing literature and creating an inventory of datasets that have been collected
- Master's degree student in the field of natural resources management, environmenal economics or a closely related field with experience in drafting reports and/or papers.
- Background on ocean science and/or economics of ecosystem services a plus.
