STREAM MONITORING VOLUNTEER/UNPAID INTERN Volunteers/unpaid Interns work with stream monitoring crews to collect biological,
physiochemical, and habitat data needed to assess stream health.
Duties may include:

USDA Internship

Dr. Mirsky (USDA-ARS Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory; Beltsville, MD) conducts agro-ecological research in organic and sustainable cropping systems.
Research focuses on evaluating cropping system sustainability including agronomic and environmental criteria. Experiments evaluate the role of cover crops and their integration into agro- ecosystems for soil, crop and, weed management.
Student will spend their time during the winter performing plant tissue, soil and greenhouse gas analysis. During the summer, interns will be: monitoring environmental and management effects on soils, crops, and weeds, in organic and sustainable cropping systems. These internship offers opportunities to develop the following skills: 1) data management and entry; 2) cash and cover crop biomass harvesting, nondestructive nitrogen stress indicators, processing, and tissue analysis; 3) soil sampling, processing, and analysis;4) weed identification and seedbank analysis.
We are looking for motivated, hardworking individuals. Ideal applicants should have experience conducting lab and/or field research, good attention to detail and, the ability to work cooperatively in teams. The ideal candidates would work part- time (10-15 hrs/wk) in the spring and full time (40hrs/wk) during the summer. Candidates only available in the spring or summer will be considered.

UMD Hydroponics Club

UMD Hydroponics exists to advance sustainable and urban agriculture through innovative techniques. We are driven by the desire to advance our campus and communities towards self-reliance and resilience. We want to show everyone that growing food can be easy, fun,

 and affordable. As an organization, we are focused on research, education, and community service. We will explore issues related to hydroponics, design hydroponic systems, serve and educate the public, and donate produce we grow to local food banks.

Meeting Schedule: We have flexible meeting times, depending on availability of majority. We communicate a lot through GroupMe, email, and Trello. 

Meeting Location(s): Locations are subject to change. We have met in Oakland Hall, but other locations may include Stamp, South Campus Diner, and the Research Greenhouse.

In addition to the internship, all stu- dents take GEOG330, a 3-credit course that fulfills three General Education requirements. Focus on sustaina- bility through the lens of London and the United Kingdom via your hands-on internship and through analysis and study of global issues. This program is ideally suited to Sustainability Studies Minors as well as students interested in how sustainabil- ity impacts all aspects of our world. Open to all majors! Leadership Training

The Maryland LEAD program is offering two exciting leadership development experiences this semester. Registration is NOW OPEN!

1) Terrapin Leadership Institute: a FREE 5-week workshop series designed to equip students with the skills necessary to promote positive social change. Introductory and Advanced tracks are offered at various times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays beginning the week of February 22. Students who successfully complete the series will receive a letter of recommendation, resume review, and personalized leadership coaching. Register at ter.ps/tli

2) Maryland Leadership Summit: Join 50 of your peers for an intensive, one-day experience of learning, growth, and self discovery. Over the course of the day, you will be challenged to get out of your comfort zone, examine your core values and beliefs, and move forward toward creating change in your community. Coral Reef Internship

RUTGERS CORAL REEF INTERNSHIP - Application portal now open!

The Central Caribbean Marine Institute and Rutgers University have a limited number of places still open for their Coral Reef Internship in Little Cayman, Cayman Islands, running from July 25th to August 11th 2016. The program is for undergraduate students who want to develop their marine fieldwork on pristine coral reef ecosystems and offers 4 transferable university credits.

There are some videos that might interest you – an aerial view of the station, some testimonials from previous participants, and a longer look at the research and education work that CCMI does in the Cayman Islands (the film is a little out of date now). Here also is a link to some frequently asked questions about the Little Cayman Research Centre. A number of last year’s participants have also offered to talk to anyone, so I can put you in touch with them if you would like to hear about their first-hand experience.

Environmental Sciences Scholarship - apply by 3/15 

To promote the preservation, awareness, and appreciation of our environment, the Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge offers scholarships to students who are pursuing careers in fish and wildlife management, environmental education and science, and related fields.  

Three annual scholarships, one each of $3000, $2000, and $1000 may be awarded to qualified applicants to be paid directly to their chosen college. The scholarships are to be used for tuition, college fees, books, supplies, and equipment, if required of all other students in the registered courses.  

Scholarships are available to students whose home residences are in Maryland and will be entering their junior or senior year or a graduate program at the end of their present college term.  Students receiving full scholarships from another source or combination of sources are not eligible.  Applicants need to print out the application form here

CPSP: Under the supervision of the director, plan and teach discussion sections of 20-25 students weekly; grade papers and projects; help maintain course website; attend planning meetings; offer office hours; and help staff 2-3 field trips each semester – these are weekend days and would require driving a university owned 7- or 12-person van.
Qualifications:

• Strong background in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainability Studies, and/or Environmental Studies
  
• Must be enrolled in a graduate program of the University of Maryland, College Park for the period of the appointment
  
• Ability to write and speak English fluently and clearly
  
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact well with a diverse group of undergraduates, faculty, and peers.
  
• Dependable, flexible, and motivated.
  Salary: The prevailing rate as determined by the Graduate School to be appropriate for a student’s level in a graduate program at the University of Maryland, College Park; and commensurate with salaries paid within ENSP or College Park Scholars to Teaching Assistants (20 hour time commitment/week).
  Benefits: Participation in a Maryland State Employees health and dental plan. Remission of tuition up to 10 credits per semester employed during AY2016-2017.
