Ohio State ecological engineering postdoc position

The Ecological Engineering research group at Ohio State is hiring a watershed and water quality modeling postdoc for two projects led by Dr. Jay Martin. One focuses on impacts and management of agricultural fields with elevated levels of soil nutrients, and the other will model impacts of farmer support and incentives supporting the adoption of management practices in 5,000-acre watershed. Positions available with new global nitrogen initiative hosted by UMCES

The newly established Global Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and Environment (NICCEE), spearheaded by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) with key partners in the U.S., Canada, and the UK, is jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, UK Research and Innovation, and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The global center seeks to harness the technological innovation of green ammonia production to bolster clean energy initiatives, combat climate change, and secure food supplies for the future, while minimizing risks of unintended consequences.

 

NICCEE will serve as an Information Hub with state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure to monitor the lifecycle and effects of nitrogen in agriculture-food-energy systems, as an Innovation Platform to facilitate the co-development of technological and socioeconomic solutions with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, and as an Education Center to nurture the next generation of scientists and innovators championing sustainable and climate-smart nitrogen management.

 

To advance its mission in accelerating socioeconomic and technological innovation for sustainable and climate-smart nitrogen management, NICCEE invites applications for the following positions:  

 

PHD Level Graduate Student Position in Nitrogen Information Systems

NICCEE is seeking a motivated Ph.D. student to develop a state-of-the-art data platform to track nitrogen management across the agriculture, food and energy systems, aiding stakeholders in informed decision making.

 

The selected candidate will be co-advised by Professor Xin Zhang, NICCEE Director, and Professor Dong Liang. The successful candidate will have 1) a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Data science, Statistics, Environmental Science, or similar field; 2) proficient in at least one programming language. Basic knowledge about nitrogen cycles in agriculture-food-energy systems is desirable but not required. 


Start Date: January to August 2024. The review of applications will begin Dec. 10, 2023 and continue until a qualified candidate is found. The assistantship will include tuition coverage, benefits, and a 12-month annual stipend of starting at $33,642. Three years of support are available through the NSF research assistantship, with additional support available through AL-UMCES institutional funds and fellowships.


Program: The student will matriculate through the Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Sciences Program (MEES; https://www.mees.umd.edu/admissions#How-to-apply), a University of Maryland multi-campus joint degree program, and will reside at the Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg for the duration of the project.

Assistant Research Scientist- Postdoctoral Researcher in Integrated Nitrogen Modeling

NICCEE is seeking a motivated researcher with experience in the areas of agriculture and land use modeling, energy modeling, and/or biogeochemical modeling to work with an interdisciplinary research team at the Joint Global Change Research Institute to develop a nitrogen module in the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM). Using the model, they will work with collaborators at NICCEE to assess the potential impacts of green ammonia technologies on various sustainability challenges such as climate change, food security, and nutrient pollution.

 

As a partner institution of NICCEE, the Joint Global Change Research Institute represents a collaboration between the University of Maryland and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (see details https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/jgcri). The Institute focuses on quantitative modeling of Human-Earth systems, primarily to advance the science and inform the policy discussions pertaining to climate change mitigation and adaptation. One notable development from the Institute is GCAM, an integrated assessment model of energy, land, water, and atmosphere.

 

The successful applicant must have (1) a PhD received within the last 5 years or within the next 8 months, (2) a strong publication record, and (3) experience with computer-based modeling, ideally in R, C++, and/or Python.

 

Start Date: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a qualified candidate is found. This is a full-time appointment with benefits, renewed annually for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory performance. Salary is $58,000 per year and includes fringe benefits.

Program Manager- Global Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and Environment (NICCEE)

 

The Program Manager will be instrumental in shaping the trajectory and impact of this global initiative and will be immersed in a diverse environment, collaborating with multiple stakeholders ranging from academic institutions, NGOs, international organizations, governments, to private enterprises.

 

The Program Manager is responsible for providing administrative and programmatic leadership for the NICCEE center. The Program Manager will report to NICCEE’s Director, Dr. Xin Zhang at UMCES.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Program Management: Oversee NICCEE’s operations, including planning, budgeting, contracting, and reporting. Ensure compliance with guidelines set by the funding organizations and facilitate inter-institutional collaboration for project completion.
  • Major Event Planning: Lead the planning and execution of NICCEE’s annual meetings (i.e., Nitrogen Summer Institute) and other significant events, enhancing its visibility on the global stage.
  • Strategic Planning and Communications: Assist NICCEE’s leadership in organizing committee and team meetings. Collaborate with communications personnel to amplify NICCEE’s achievements and mission. Work with the director and the executive committee to develop business and marketing plans for sustainable growth of the Center.

  • Leadership: Foster relationships within and outside NICCEE, and engage with various stakeholders.

Two postdoctoral research positions (up to 3 years) in aquatic resources restoration

 Two Postdoctoral Research positions (up to 3 years) in aquatic resources restoration and Earth and environmental science at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA

 

Two Postdoctoral Research positions are available, each for up to a three-year term (pending performance) starting January 1, 2024, in the Department of Earth and Environment at Franklin and Marshall College, a liberal arts undergraduate institution in Lancaster PA. We seek two highly motivated postdoctoral scholars in one or more of these disciplines: geomorphology, surface water hydrology, freshwater ecosystem restoration/ecohydrology, carbon and other nutrient cycling, and geochemistry or biogeochemistry. Each postdoctoral scholar will teach two undergraduate course credits per year that support and expand our curricular offerings in these areas and will mentor undergraduate research assistants. Courses can be one class with a lab or two classes with no lab, including seminars in the candidates’ areas of research expertise. Teaching experience is preferred but not required. 

 

The fully-funded research will focus on one of the largest urban floodplain-wetland restoration projects to date in the mid-Atlantic region of the eastern US, the Little Conestoga Creek Blue-Green Corridor project, with one postdoctoral position focusing on water quality and the other on floodplain/wetland biogeochemistry. The postdoctoral researchers will establish and maintain multiple types of monitoring along 2.7 km of the Little Conestoga Creek stream corridor adjacent to the F&M campus. The research will include fieldwork to install and maintain instrumentation to monitor water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, specific conductance, nitrate-N, and other parameters. 


Funding is available immediately for a comprehensive monitoring program with new instrumentation including three fully equipped EXO2 water quality sondes, a Sontek Flowtracker 2 with integrated GPS, greenhouse gas flux monitors, and a stable isotope CRD spectrometer. Our department is well-equipped with ICP-OES, XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, two gamma spectrometers, two liquid scintillation counters, and an elemental combustion analyzer. The project will involve fieldwork to map the stream corridor using UAV photogrammetry (including a new thermal UAV with RTK GPS) and on-the-ground RTK-GPS surveying with Emlid GPS units.

Forest and Wetland Post-Docs at SERC

Two open post-doc positions for work at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

One position is to lead TEMPEST, a novel large-scale field manipulation in an upland coastal forest that mimics storm surge-driven intrusion of seawater and intensified precipitation.

Reducing Food Waste and Food Insecurity – Modeling, Technology, and Business

 

A successful candidate should have a background in increasing food security, with experience in modeling, GIS, life cycle assessment (LCA), and/or business incubation for increasing food security. The candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, IT, business entrepreneurship, social socialists, and extension specialists on bringing technology to markets that aid in reducing food waste and increasing food security. The candidate should have a background or strong familiarity with modeling, IT, or entrepreneurship. Knowledge of anaerobic digestion and composting processes of food waste is desired, not required. Necessary soft skills include project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to help manage large teams and keep personnel on-task.

A successful candidate should have a thorough background and publications on modeling, GIS, and/or life cycle assessment (LCA). The candidate will apply their rigorous modeling background to food waste, including food waste production (quantity and location), reutilization by food banks and other repurposing (animal operations), anaerobic digestion, and composting. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to design, implement, and coordinate research initiatives to establish the Climate CORE (Community Outreach, Research and Education) program at UDC. Specifically, the Postdoctoral Scholar will help recruit and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers, ascertain best practices for recruiting BIPOC students into STEM fields, and identify priorities of BIPOC communities for mitigating/adapting to climate change and how their priorities overlap with federal priorities. Initial work will largely be completed through literature reviews, surveys and focus groups with community stakeholders, and desktop analyses and reporting of data. Job Description
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join a collaboration between the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, American University, and Washington State University on an NSF-funded grant to study Hydraulic and Hydrologic Regulation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Forest Soils and Trees and Detection with Radon as a Novel Tracer. The Fellow will share leadership with the PIs to design a field study that links the physical transport and chemical evolution of water across the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum to sources and sinks of natural methane emissions across wetland, upland, and transitional forest ecosystems.


Our project also includes a substantial Broader Impacts component focused on developing and carrying out an environmental science field trip program for elementary school students in nearby Prince George’s County, MD. The postdoc will be welcome, although not required, to assist with this program and other outreach and DEI efforts at SERC and AU.


The Fellow will be based in the Biogeochemistry Lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (Dr. Patrick Megonigal) with a co-appointment in the Environmental Science Department at nearby American University (Dr. Karen Knee, project PI). The Fellow will further have access to networking and co-mentoring from the Ecohydrology and Landscape Dynamics lab at Washington State University (Dr. Kevan Moffett). Current funding anticipates a two-year position, pending a successful first year, with possibility for extension if further funding is obtained.

Post-Docs in UMD ENST

 

Two Postdoctoral Associate positions available at the University of Maryland in Manure Processing and Anaerobic Digestion Policy


We have two postdoctoral positions available starting in August 2022 at the University of Maryland. One successful candidate should have a background on dairy, poultry, beef, or swine manure management, nutrient content of manure, and the effect using anaerobic digestion to transform manure and food waste feedstocks. A second candidate should have knowledge on the effect of nutrient management and US state policies on the economics of anaerobic digestion implementation, including climate change implications of digestion technology implementation compared to other manure technologies. Background knowledge and experience is needed in anaerobic digestion of manure or manure+food waste co-digestion, nutrient management, life cycle assessment, and greenhouse gas emissions from digestion implementation. These positions will require extensive knowledge of US policies associated with manure and anaerobic digestion with only minimum work in laboratory analytics.

A PhD is required in a relevant field, such as engineering, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, agricultural economics, agricultural policy, or soil science. Both post-doc positions are one-year, 100% research positions, with no teaching responsibilities.

Postdoctoral Associate in Microbial Ecology - Stroud Water Research Center

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Stroud Water Research Center is searching for a Postdoctoral Associate to study molecular microbial ecology in aquatic and terrestrial environments.


The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in microbial ecology with expertise in comprehensive molecular techniques including but not limit to high throughput sequencing, qPCR, metagenomics, etc. The ideal candidate should (1) have core competencies in molecular microbial ecology; (2) have a strong basic and theoretical understanding of microbial ecology and be able to integrate bio-, geo-, and chemical sciences; (3) possess a strong publication record; (4) have a proven ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team; (5) be flexible about field/lab work, data processing and writing beyond routine work hours; and (6) be knowledgeable about the emerging technologies within the discipline.

EXPECTATIONS
The successful candidate will participate in multiple projects funded by the National Science Foundation and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Work will include some experimental design and field and laboratory work, but the primary focus will be on analysis of existing data sets and preparation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. As an integral part of Stroud’s postdoc mentor/development plan, the postdoctoral associate is also expected to participate and assist in grant proposals for additional funding. Experience with bacterial monitoring, anaerobic culture, soil health, or bioinformatics is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with other Stroud Center senior scientists, postdocs, technical staff, graduate students, as well as with external partners and colleagues (e.g., University of Delaware, University of Pennsylvania). This is a full-time, salaried position that requires daily in-person activity on the Stroud Center campus. Some weekends and early/late working conditions may occasionally be required including the potential for overnight travel.

The Stroud Water Research Center will provide a competitive salary based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position including a comprehensive employee benefit plan. Funding for this position is secured for at least 2 years and extension is contingent on additional grant support.

ABOUT STROUD WATER RESEARCH CENTER
Stroud Water Research Center seeks to advance knowledge and stewardship of fresh water through global research, education, and watershed restoration and to help businesses, landowners, policymakers, and individuals make informed decisions that affect water quality and availability around the world. Since its creation in 1967, teams of scientists have conducted pioneering research on streams and rivers locally, regionally, and throughout the world. Today, the Stroud Center’s research team blends its talents in chemistry, microbiology, aquatic entomology (insects and other invertebrates), ichthyology (fish), hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and ecosystem modeling in collaborative studies of the physical, chemical, and biological processes of streams and rivers. The Stroud Center’s education staff helps to interpret our research findings and builds education programs about freshwater ecology, management, and stewardship for a wide audience. The Stroud Center’s Watershed Restoration Group develops and implements watershed restoration programs that connect landowners, stakeholders, and the general public with best management practices for conserving, restoring, and protecting watersheds. While we work in watersheds all over the world, most of our ideas are generated and pilot tested at the Stroud Center’s main campus in the White Clay Creek experimental watershed where the Stroud Center has a 50-year research and monitoring record within a unique facility that includes indoor “wet” labs and streamside flumes fed by flowing water pumped in from the creek on our property. In 2012, the Stroud Center expanded its campus to 50 acres and constructed a LEED Platinum-certified building for education and public outreach, the Moorhead Environmental Complex. Learn more at
