Short Description: Under direction, this position will manage the food donation project at Pope Farm Nursery. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with partners to plant, harvest, weigh, and manage volunteer groups to support combating food insecurity in Montgomery County.
Skills required:
- Time Management
- Problem solving, critical thinking, and customer service skills
- Knowledge of common insect pests, plant diseases, fruit and vegetable plants in Central Maryland region
- At least 6 months working in a medium to large scale food production, farm, garden setting
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
Job Function: Manage food donation farm at Pope Farm
- Plant, harvest, weigh produce to be collected by HarvestShare
- Weed and water 2 fields, totaling just under ½ an acre
- Reports directly to Community Garden Program Manager
- Works with partners to weigh and collect produce to be donated to food assistance providers in Montgomery County
- Recruit, manage and direct volunteer groups to harvest produce at appropriate maturity, provide guidance on best ways to harvest different crops
- Work with different departments to promote the food donation project
- Track progress via pictures, video, blog, social media, and newsletter
Working conditions: Works in office (40%) and field (60%). Considerable pressure to meet planting and harvesting deadlines. May be exposed to weather extremes.
