Job Title/Position: Wildlife Technician 3/00226752
Location: Social Circle, Georgia
Job Responsibilities: Under general supervision, the Wildlife Technician 3 will assist biologists in the Wildlife Conservation Section with collecting biological data and conducting research on small mammals. The position will support program biologists by contributing to the development and implementation of scientific sampling protocols. Responsibilities include planning and coordinating surveys and research, identifying and tracking T&E species, as well as supervising seasonal workers, volunteers, and other personnel. This will include monitoring and research related to bats and other small mammals throughout Georgia. The Wildlife Tech 3 will also be the lead MOTUS technician supporting biologists tagging mammals and birds. The technician will be responsible for installing and maintaining MOTUS towers and equipment statewide. After initial training, the MOTUS technician will be expected to install new systems, troubleshoot technical issues, download data, and update the online data portal, and coordinate with MOTUS partners in the SE US. Under limited supervision, the Wildlife Tech 3 will oversee the duties and tasks associated with operating and maintaining assigned equipment for small mammal work, as well as maintenance of facilities and vehicles and purchasing of supplies and materials for fieldwork in accordance with state procedures. They will provide technical support and outreach to individuals, conservation partners, and assist other DNR staff as needed. Current rabies vaccinations are required for work with mammals. This position is housed in the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Wildlife Resources Division and will require overnight travel to project areas in remote regions of the state.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management or a related field from an accredited college or university OR Associates degree or equivalent coursework (90 quarter hours or 60 semester hours) in wildlife management or related field from an accredited college or university AND one year of experience required at the lower level Wildlife Technician 2 (NRT011) or position equivalent OR High school diploma or GED AND two years of experience required in the Wildlife Resources Division as a Wildlife Tech 2 (NRT011) which included responsibilities in game or non game management.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with planning and conducting surveys for bats, including federally protected species, and other small mammals in the southeastern US.
- Experience with handling, identification, banding, and radio-tagging of bats and other small mammals.
- Knowledge of & experience with the Motus Wildlife Tracking System as well as hands-on mechanical skills to assemble, install, and maintain Motus towers.
- Experience and familiarity with GIS, Biotics and Natural Heritage methodology. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with data entry, data analysis, writing technical reports & supervision of volunteers and technicians.
- Status as a current or former employee of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Salary: $45,805.13/year plus benefits
