The National Park Service, National Capital Region (NCR) will soon be looking to hire a permanent GS-12 Regional Hydrologist based in Washington DC. The Regional Hydrologist serves as the senior advisor in hydrology with a focus on both urban and rural systems for 12 parks throughout Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington DC. The hydrologist is responsible for program development and implementation related to hydrology and water resources. The hydrologist interacts with NPS staff at the park, region and national level as well as other State and Federal agencies. This position is based in the NCR Division of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) and reports to the regional Chief of NRS.
The hydrologist:
- Analyzes complex water resource issues related to the management of parklands.
- Evaluates potential impacts on water quality, water quantity and channel morphology by planned or existing land use activities, both within and external to park boundaries.
- Conducts water resources studies involving the development of quantitative hydrologic and hydraulic information for wetland and stream restorations, engineering designs, floodplain management and associated processes.
- Develops and implements protection, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to repair and/or maintain water resources, stream channels, and wetland habitats.
