USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research Internship

We are accepting applications for unpaid student internship and other volunteer positions assisting with a diverse range of projects evaluating the sustainability of cropping systems in the Mid-Atlantic.  Accepted applicants will participate in diverse activities including taking soil, gas, and plant samples in the field, lab work, data entry and management, sample processing and organization, and miscellaneous projects to support research activities.  Field sites, lab and offices are all approximately 10-15 minutes north of U of MD campus.  Public transportation is available from campus to reach our main building.

These positions allow for flexible scheduling, but must be prearranged with supervisor.  No experience is required, but an ideal candidate will have an interest in sustainable agriculture and/or be a science major with an interest in research. All training will be provided.

The Institute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns Hopkins University offers undergraduate students from colleges and universities around the country a chance to participate in research projects in the exciting and rapidly growing area of nanobiotechnology, a place where biology, medicine, and nanotech meet. Enjoy 10 weeks of research in the fields of nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering in a hands-on, graduate level laboratory.
Program Objectives: • To provide students with a greater understanding of the development and applications of nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering. • To give students a solid grounding in research methodologies in these areas. • To inspire students with a deeper appreciation for the contributions that improved technology in nanotechnology for biology and bioengineering can make to our lives. • To grant students with a truly unique educational experience, with research at the core, while at the same time serving as an ideal foundation for future graduate work.

Launched in 2006, INBT focuses its efforts in research on the basic biological sciences, the clinical sciences, and public health. In the basic biological sciences, INBT supports research exploiting nanoscience to advance our understanding of cellular and molecular dynamics at the molecular level. In the clinical sciences, INBT supports research to develop novel methods for diagnostics and therapeutics. Dr. Mirsky (USDA-ARS Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory; Beltsville, MD) conducts agro-ecological research in conventional and organic field crop production. Research focuses on evaluating cropping system sustainability including agronomic and environmental criteria. Experiments evaluate the role of cover crops and their integration into agro-ecosystems for soil, crop and, weed management.
     Student will spend their time during the fall/winter processing plant and soil samples and potentially performing plant tissue, soil and greenhouse gas analysis. Students that demonstrate strong work ethic, good attention to detail, and interest in the research will be encouraged to stay for summer employment.  During the summer, we will be monitoring environmental and management effects on soils, crops, and weeds, in organic and sustainable cropping systems.  This position offers opportunities to develop the following skills: 1) data management and entry; 2) cash and cover crop biomass harvesting, nondestructive nitrogen stress indicators, processing, and tissue analysis for C and N; 3) soil sampling, processing, and analysis; and 4) weed id and seedbank analysis.
     Hours are flexible, we have openings both during spring semester and during the summer.

Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.

In particular, we encourage students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. We believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.

​Course Description: The course aims to impart the fundamental knowledge in nanoscience in the context of the advancement of Nanotechnology in energy and environmental applications. Through this course students will taught the different aspects of Nanotechnology and the bridging of multidisciplinary knowledge in terms of the positives and negatives of nanotechnology. Specific areas to be covered in this course include nanocatalysis, application of nanotechnology in renewable energy, solar photovoltaic, photoelectrochemical conversion, energy storage, pollutants sensing, and photocatalytic abatement of air and water. Moreover, the course will analyze nanotechnology through an interdisciplinary outlook for a life-cycle analysis and how nanoparticle characteristics impact transport in the environment, including human exposure assessment, and a discussion of current measurement tools.
