Job description

The Human-Wildlife Interactions Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is recruiting two Field Telemetry Technicians (one Lead, one Supporting) to aid in an 11-week study of bats in the northern plains of Missouri. The Missouri Bat Project is an 8-year study and collaboration between UIUC and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The main goal of the project is to understand how federally endangered Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis) are affected by timber management on MDC conservation lands. Technicians will gather data on bat distributions and roosting ecology on six conservation areas, with most time spent outdoors collecting field data. Candidates should expect to work in inclement weather and will be exposed to ticks. Therefore, applicants should be confident in field abilities, noting the physical demands of the work. Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work long hours and different times and days (including weekends and nights). You will live and work in a team environment. The position offers an excellent opportunity to conduct research on federally listed bats and to gain experience working alongside state wildlife biologists and bat ecologists.

Job Requirements:

Lead: This position will aid a PhD student in supervising the work of five technicians and a new MS student. The lead technician will liaison with the project PI, Joy O’Keefe, a PhD student, and collaborators with MDC to coordinate and manage field activities. Both the lead and supporting technician will be responsible for: 1) locating Indiana bat day roost using homing and triangulation radio-telemetry with Yagi antennas, topographical maps, GPS, and compass; 2) collecting data on roost tree characteristics (DBH, tree species identification); 3) conducting nightly exit counts at roost located with telemetry; 4) completing data entry; and 5) assisting with a variety of additional field/lab activities, as needed.

Location:

Northeastern Missouri. The nearest city is Kirksville, MO.

Salary

Temporary, full-time positions. 11 weeks beginning 31 May to 16 August 2024. Lead: $20/hour Supporting: $15.50/hour Bunk housing and field vehicles will be provided. The University of Illinois will not pay for relocation costs (moving expenses).

Qualifications

Lead: Evidence of supervisory experience and at least one field season of advanced radio telemetry experience. Supporting: Evidence of field experience that included a radio telemetry component. For both: Must have obtained a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in wildlife biology, ecology, or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience using radio-telemetry methods and/or conducting research on bats. Must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and be in good physical condition. It is also critical that you are detail-oriented and interested in collecting data for research studies. Must possess a valid driver's license, pass driving record check, and willing to be trained to operate a 4WD vehicle, on- or off-road.

Application process: To apply for this position, please combine your cover letter, resume and contact information for three references into one pdf file and send to Casey Wagnon (cwagnon2@illinois.edu). Applications received by 15 April 2024 will be given the highest consideration. In the subject line of your email, please indicate for which position(s) you are applying.

ENST scholarship deadline extended

Scholarship extended to April 11

Please help us spread the word of ENST's annual Scholarship Opportunity. Two unique kinds of scholarships were created by and funded by agricultural engineers many years ago are available to help ENST Ecological Technology Design students:

  • ASABE Washington, DC – Maryland Section Scholarship funded by donations of many agricultural engineers in the local area. It was started in 1975 and gave its first scholarship in 1981. The engineers felt it was their responsibility to assist worthy students with financial need to achieve their education. Environmental stewardship was one of their interests.
  • Robert L. and Frances C. Green Scholarship created by family members. Dr. Green served as Chair of the Department of Agricultural Engineering here at the University of Maryland from 1965 to 1979 and as Acting Director of the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station from 1972 to 1976. Grad student advertisement

We seek a prospective student interested in pursuing a graduate degree in partnership with an interdisciplinary project focused on human dimensions of urban human-wildlife interactions (particularly carnivores).  The assistantship is available through the Department of Natural Resources & the Environment at University of Connecticut.  Start date is August 2024.  A Master of Science student is preferred and the likely hire, but PhD students will be considered.

This position is part of a larger interdisciplinary effort focused on social-ecological drivers and outcomes of urban human-carnivore interactions across four US metro regions to examine spatial and temporal patterns of those interactions, and public and managerial factors that influence use and acceptability of wildlife management strategies. Planned focal species are coyotes and raccoons. The project is led by the Lincoln Park Zoo, and leverages wildlife data and relationships through the Urban Wildlife Information Network (UWIN). The selected candidate will work most closely with the social science project sub-team: Anita Morzillo (UConn), Anne Short Gianotti (Boston University), Kelli Larson (Arizona State University), Julie Young (Utah State University), and Maureen Murray (Lincoln Park Zoo).

Planned work for this assistantship will focus on stakeholder interviews, mapping of interview data in relation to ecological (e.g., camera trap) data, understanding tipping points that affect human response to wildlife-related events, and decision-making about response to those events and wildlife management policy. Results will contribute to broader understanding of human- wildlife dynamics within urban regions, and how characteristics of the urban landscape influence those dynamics. There is some flexibility in the thesis or dissertation topic emphasis, to be determined based on the interests of the selected applicant. However, it should be noted that data collection associated with this assistantship will focus on human dimensions (social science).

Applicants should have: 1) a background in natural resources, human dimensions of wildlife, human-wildlife interactions, geography, landscape ecology, urban ecosystems, and/or a related discipline, 2) interest in contributing to socio-ecological or coupled natural-human systems research, 3) interest in social science data collection and analysis (qualitative and quantitative), and 4) the ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.  The student will be expected to present research results at professional conferences, publish research results in peer- reviewed scientific outlets, and pursue extramural funding to supplement their assistantship, as appropriate.  A working knowledge of qualitative social science methodologies, GIS, and/or any related programming languages (e.g., Python, R) is preferred but not essential.

Interested students are asked to send the following materials directly to me (Anita Morzillo; anita.morzillo@uconn.edu) as a single *.pdf document: 1) a cover letter describing their professional background, relevant research experience and interests, career goals, and reasons for seeking a Master’s or Doctoral degree, 2) names and contact information for three references, 3) a current curriculum vitae, and 4) copies of transcripts, and 5) GRE scores (if available).

Unofficial copies of transcripts are sufficient for initial contact.  GRE scores are not required for program admission, but helpful for overall application evaluation.  Potential students must have received a GPA equivalent to a 3.0/4.0 in the last 90 term (or 60 semester) hours of their Bachelor’s degree program.  Do not submit materials to the NRE department or UConn Graduate School at this time.

Application review will begin 15 April 2024, and continue until a candidate is selected.

Further information about the UConn Department of Natural Resources and the Environment may be found at https://nre.uconn.edu/
