Study abroad course to Iceland / Costa Rica
ENME 407: SUSTAINABILITY, CLIMATE CHANGE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS
COSTA RICA - WINTER 2027 [January 2nd - 18th]
ICELAND - SPRING BREAK 2027 [March 13th - 21st]
Are you interested in Sustainability? Do you like to travel? If so, you should consider signing up for ENME 407: Sustainability, Climate Change and Renewable Energy Systems.
These exciting courses, housed in the department of Mechanical Engineering, offer students a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the natural wonders of Iceland or Costa Rica and to learn about a variety of sustainable technologies to combat climate change like geothermal and hydroelectric energy production.
The program will be offered in two different locations this upcoming year:
Costa Rica - Winter 2027 [January 2nd - 18th]
Iceland - Spring Break 2027 [March 13th - 21st]
The course can satisfy a number of academic requirements and can double count toward the UMD Sustainability Minor as a Science and Technology course. Please see the course flyer for more specific academic details and reach out to your advisor should you have any questions. Applications are due by Wednesday September 30th 2026.

About the Program
Kenya is a part of the larger African conservation story dealing with many environmental issues. From climate change to endangered species, human-wildlife conflict, the complexities surrounding conservation practices, and regional policies.
This program focuses on Kenya due to its richness in wildlife and biodiversity and the increasing role of conservation on the world stage. In particular, the Maasai Mara is a vital ecosystem across Africa; its richness in biodiversity, wildlife, and waterways draws in scientists, scholars, and students from all over the world, aiming to understand how to improve policies to protect this region.
In many parts of the world, the critical role of indigenous groups in conservation practices needs to be studied more. In Kilifi, the sacred kaya forests (a UNESCO-recognized heritage site) have existed since the 14th century. Conservation of these forests by local elders through knowledge passed down from generation to generation is an interesting case study on how implementing policies with the current generation can help future generations continue to protect these forests. Further, the Sacred Kaya Forests comply with UN-Sustainable goals: #3- Good Health and well-being, #11-Sustainable Cities and Communities, and #12 Responsible Consumption and Production.
Kenya is highly diverse—with 42 different tribes and dialects and an impressive ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity, which makes it the perfect case study to analyze conservation issues. The country’s beautiful landscapes and scenery make it attractive to those students seeking an immersive study abroad experience while enjoying the beauty of the continent of Africa.
Eligibility
You must be in good academic and judicial standing and you must not have any registration blocks to participate in this program.
UMD and non-UMD sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to apply.

ENME 489Y: JAPAN: ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
CLIMATE CHANGE, BULLET TRAINS & HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VEHICLES
Summer 2026 Study Abroad Course: May 25TH – June 10TH
Are you interested in Sustainability? Do you like to travel? If so, you should consider signing up for ENME 489Y: JAPAN – Advanced Transportation Systems – Climate Change, Bullet Trains and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles.
This exciting course, housed in the department of Mechanical Engineering, offers students a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the beautiful country of Japan which is well-renowned for its unique and historical culture, its delicious food and its incredible world leading transportation systems.
In this course students will learn about the most cutting-edge advanced transportation systems and technologies, as well as their potential to combat climate change, with a particular focus on bullet trains and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Some program highlights are below:
- Immerse yourself in Japanese culture by visiting historical temples, museums, interacting with local guides, as well as sampling / making some of Japan's most famous foods like sushi, ramen, okonomiyaki and many more
- Explore the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, as well as the historical capital city of Kyoto, to learn about the history, culture and technology of Japan through a variety of activities / field trips
- Learn about Japan's advanced transportation infrastructure through engaging academic lectures on sustainability / advanced transportation technologies, visits to technology museums, automotive manufacturing facilities, and many other activities
- Experience some of Japan's most breathtaking architectural / natural wonders and cultural experiences: Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and many more

AGNR is now accepting applications for Study Abroad Scholarships for Winter, Spring Break, or Spring semester programs in 2026. The application can be found on our Fund Your Education website.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis between now and the Education Abroad program acceptance date for these programs (October 16).
Should you apply for these scholarships but not be accepted into the study abroad program you applied for, simply email us to withdraw your application for funding.
