funded MS and PhD positions

Here is a good opportunity for anyone interested in funded graduate student position in wetland ecology.

MS and PhD Assistantships in Ecology/Biogeochemistry
                                                      University of Central Florida

The Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL, USA) is recruiting both an MS and PhD student to begin Fall 2023. Both positions are fully funded through a combination of GTA and GRA support to study the ecological functions of wetlands and coastal ecosystems in Florida. Specifically, our lab focuses on the biogeochemical cycling of energy and nutrients at the soil-water interface and how these cycles are affected by stressors (e.g., sea level rise, vegetation shifts, hydrologic alteration) and restoration activities (e.g., beneficial dredge placement, oyster reef restoration).

Interested applicants should review our lab website and past publications for more information. An ideal candidate will hold a BS (for the MS position) or MS (for the PhD position) in Biology, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Coastal Science, or a related discipline. Strong performance in relevant coursework and past research experience are key. Good written and oral communication skills, a willingness to work hard and learn new things, self-motivation, and a positive attitude are also important for success.

If you would like to apply, email me at: lisa.chambers@ucf.edu. Include in your email, 1) why you are interested in joining my lab (i.e., how your research interests and experiences fit with what we are currently studying), 2) what topics or questions you hope to research during your graduate education, and 3) an attachment that includes a current copy of your CV/resume indicating your GPA. Please put “prospective grad student” in the subject line.

Note the application deadline for the 2023 Fall semester is December 1, 2022. Applicants should seek encouragement to apply from Dr. Chambers first. Applications are submitted to the UCF Department of Biology online and require a B.S. degree in Biology or related discipline, a GPA > 3.0 (or international equivalent), three strong and letters of recommendation, a CV / résumé, and an Essay / Personal Statement.

Elise Willis | The Garden Club of America Zone VI Fellowship in Urban Forestry

Elise Willis is a master’s student in Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida. Willis’s project found solutions to Florida’s decades-long development-induced tree-canopy loss. Through interviews with land developers across the state, Willis identified what incentives would encourage planting, preservation, and prioritization of trees in development projects. Willis hopes her findings will provide local governments with data to guide future policy discussions.

Graduate Research Assistant - Landowner Survey on Wildlife Management

DescriptionThe University of Maryland Extension is seeking a graduate student to assist in conducting research of private landowner knowledge and actions related to wildlife and habitat conservation. The purpose of this project is to inform future educational and extension initiatives related to wildlife conservation. Because 92% of Maryland's land area is under private ownership, wildlife and habitat conservation in the state relies heavily on the actions of private landowners. The graduate student will work with the principal investigator, Dr. Luke Macaulay, and a postdoctoral researcher in implementing the project.

The graduate student will be focused on the implementation of the survey, analysis, and publishing results. A significant amount of preparation and design work for the survey has been completed, including conducting focus group meetings, establishing a state-wide sample of landowners with both addresses and emails, and pre-testing and piloting the questionnaire. The student will be able to draw on this work in making final adjustments to the survey. The survey will consist of both written and electronic delivery of the survey to maximize response and minimize bias.

Duties and Responsibilities: In collaboration with the PI and a postdoctoral researcher with experience in surveys the graduate student will be able to:

  • Assist in design and implementation of both email and paper versions of the survey.
  • Experiment with various approaches in survey design and administration to maximize participation and response rate.
  • Supervise digitization of data (for paper surveys) drawing upon a team of undergraduate research assistants.
  • Monitor survey responses to identify problems in the survey and correct them.
  • Contribute as a co-author in writing a scientific journal article for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and research best practices to improve survey design, administration, and analysis, and bring findings to the team for discussion.
  • Knowledge of approaches to increasing response rate, reducing survey error and bias, and controlling for other methodological issues that could affect landowner interest and participation in a study focused on wildlife and conservation.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative data analysis methods, preferably in R or Python.
  • Strong writing skills for drafting materials to be published in peer-reviewed literature and other publications. Co-authorship is welcome and encouraged.
  • Experience with creative data visualization.

Stipend and Dates of Employment:

This position is flexible in its administrative structure and can be filled as either an hourly graduate student position, or as an Academic Graduate Research Assistantship (either half-time or full-time GA) depending on experience. The position is for  January 2023 until December 2023, with a possibility to extend the position. We have support to include full time employment for summer of 2023.

To apply:

Please send a cover letter and resume to Dr. Luke Macaulay at lukemac@umd.edu by December 2, 2022.  We plan to conduct interviews in early December and start the position in January.
