ENST Lab - Wildlife Technician and internship openings

The Mullinax Wildlife Spatial Ecology Lab (WSEL) in the Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) Department is looking for dedicated individuals to assist a research program starting October 2022. We will be investigating wildlife communities in Montgomery County, Maryland, and their role in maintenance of tick-borne diseases. We need technicians assisting in camera trapping, habitat data collection, and tick collection. Applicants are expected to work for at least one semester, with preference given to candidates available longer. These positions can also serve a class credit when applicable. Work hours will typically consist of morning and afternoon shifts or variable lab hours. All applicants are expected to work >10 hours a week and are expected to work in the field and/or lab daily each week, although there are different schedules and work duty options. Technicians must provide a sound driving record, be vaccinated and boosted against Covid 19, and agree to follow University of Maryland Covid protocols. Preferred candidate qualifications include: For Camera Data Processing ● Strong computer skills in excel and data organization. ● Good orienteering and time management skills. ● Ability to process data independently. For Various Field Work ● Must be comfortable working early mornings and some evenings. ● Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive field vehicles or personal vehicles. ● Able to walk 10+ miles and be comfortable lifting/carrying 50 lbs. ● Assist in tick sample collection and data management. ● Ability to conduct field work during hot and humid conditions with biting insects ● Prior field experience working in field conditions ● Ability to communicate effectively with crew members and professionally with the public ● Mid-Atlantic plant identification skills ● Ability to pass a standard background check Field work requires comfortable hiking clothing such as long socks, breathable long pants, and comfortable hiking boots. Additionally, technicians must wear a mask. We will be hiring 4 paid positions that must be UMD undergraduate students, and we will offer 2-3 volunteer internship positions, given the applicant can work the minimum hourly requirement each week.
