PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Japan is a country well-renowned for its unique and historical culture, its delicious food and its incredible world leading  transportation systems. Japanese bullet trains, known locally as shinkansen, race through sprawling cities and quaint villages at  break-neck speeds of nearly 200 mph with pinpoint punctuality. From the sleek shinkansen to the humble local train, Japan has  one of the largest and most advanced systems of public transportation in the world.  

In addition to its world-famous trains, the automotive industry in Japan is also one of the most prominent and largest industries  in the world. Japan is home to many of the world's well-known car brands such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, Mitsubishi,  Mazda, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Datsun, Hino, Daihatsu, Isuzu and Subaru; many of which are at the forefront of new technology development.  

In this course students will learn about the most cutting-edge advanced transportation systems and technologies, as well as their  potential to combat climate change, with a particular focus on bullet trains and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Immerse yourself in Japanese culture by visiting historical temples, museums, interacting with local guides, as well as  sampling / making some of Japan's most famous foods like sushi, ramen, okonomiyaki and many more Explore the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, as well as the historical capital city of Kyoto, to learn about the history, culture and  technology of Japan through a variety of activities / field trips

Learn about Japan's advanced transportation infrastructure through engaging academic lectures on sustainability /  advanced transportation technologies, visits to technology museums, train control centers, automotive manufacturing  facilities, and many other activities

ENST Position Announcements

The Department of Environmental Science & Technology (ENST) at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, (UMD) is pleased to offer three Postdoctoral Associate positions.

About Them:
The Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at SUNY ESF collaborates with Indigenous Nations within the geography of New York State on environmental research, outreach, and education. Work is conducted following the priorities of the partnering Nations, spanning the disciplines of ecology, hydrology, conservation biology, and more.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Graduate Research Assistants to conduct research in support of the shared research agenda between Indigenous Nations and the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment:

Graduate Research Assistant – Bat Ecology:
This position will focus on characterizing the presence and activity of the bat communities on and adjacent to the Indigenous Nation lands, and the impacts of nearby development on bat communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research aligned with the shared research priorities for bat projects.
  • Analyze data to address the questions within the shared research agenda.
  • Collaborate with faculty, Indigenous Nations, and fellow researchers on ongoing initiatives.
  • Prepare and present research findings in academic, governmental, and community formats as appropriate.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to project discussions.
  • Follow research protocols in respecting Indigenous sovereignty and rights.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant fields [e.g. Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, etc.].
  • Experience, knowledge, and/or interest in working with Indigenous Nations on environmental research.
  • Must be comfortable in a rugged forest environment with most of the hiking off trail in what could be hot and humid conditions.
  • Must be willing to work varied daily schedules, often long hours (>10 hours) during the field season.
  • Strong navigational skills with maps, compass, GPS devices, and with limited cell service.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with GIS software or a willingness to learn.
  • Interest in learning or experience with: acoustic recording devices and analysis software; R and statistical programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Start Date: Summer 2025 for Fieldwork and Training

Georgia DNR Bat Technician Positions

BAT CONSERVATION SEASONAL TECHNICIAN POSITIONS

The Wildlife Conservation Section is offering 2 seasonal positions for summer-fall 2025. The employees will primarily be conducting acoustic surveys for bats throughout Georgia. Applicants must be willing to work for long days (> 10 hours) under physically challenging conditions (e.g., hot days/nights walking through mixed habitats). Activities will include collecting bat acoustic calls using the NABat protocol, downloading and organizing call data, and conducting call analysis using bat call ID programs and visual vetting. Other activities may include bridge and culvert surveys, bat mist-netting, other small mammal surveys and other work as needed. Travel to study sites will be by state vehicle, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Lodging will be provided during surveys.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a valid class C driver’s license. Applicants must have some college-level coursework in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field. Applicants should be in good physical condition and be able to work at night and in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, alligators, biting insects, etc. are possible. Applicants should be comfortable performing data entry and other computer-based work.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals that have current rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis, have experience with bat mist netting, bat handling and identification techniques, acoustic detectors and bat call identification. Some experience using a GPS and GIS is also preferred.

Duration: May 16, 2025 through fall, end date flexible depending on availability (limited term of 6-months)

Salary: $14.00 per hour; usually working 30-40 hrs/week

SCDNR Bat Biologist Position - Conservation Planning

Position Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is looking to hire a 2-yr temporary grant Wildlife Biologist to co-lead landscape-level bat conservation planning efforts on SCDNR owned lands. The Biologist will coordinate with our Office of Environmental Programs, Heritage Trust, GIS and forestry staff, contractors, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to focus conservation planning efforts on five highest conservation concern (HCC) bat species in SC: the Northern long-eared (Myotis septentrionalis), gray (Myotis grisescens), tricolored (Perimyotis subflavus), little brown (Myotis lucifugus), and hoary (Lasiurus cinereus) bats.

The Biologist will utilize ArcGIS Pro to collect environmental setting information for South Carolina and SCDNR properties and assist with land cover analysis. The Biologist will define and classify SCDNR management activities and seasonality as it relates to HCC bats and be dedicated to bat data management and QA/QC. The Biologist will detail biological and life history information on HCC bats and update the South Carolina Bat Conservation Plan. The Biologist will assist with HCC species distribution modeling efforts and conduct bat acoustic surveys to ground truth and improve species distribution modeling in target areas with insufficient data.

Position is based in West Columbia, SC. SCDNR vehicle provided. When overnight stays outside of the Columbia area are needed, housing and $35 per diem will be provided.

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a master's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area OR bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and at least two (2) years of related experience relevant to the job. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with ArcGIS Pro and writing detailed and comprehensive reports for wildlife conservation and management. Able to use geospatial concepts to create, manage, analyze, map, and share spatial data. Skilled at leading and implementing projects independently, and familiar with South Carolina's native bats, their biology, habitats, survey methods, and conservation concerns. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally with peers and landowners on technical and non-technical subjects and assist in development and management of grants, budgets, and monthly and annual reports. Willing to work non-standard hours for bat surveys with overnight travel, sometimes under challenging field conditions.

TERP FARM, the University of Maryland’s own vegetable farm, is offering paid full-time and part-time internship opportunities to current UMD students for the upcoming 2025 growing season! Support for these positions is provided by the Institute of Applied Agriculture, the Do Good Institute 2025 Summer Impact Internship Program, and the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station.

This internship is valuable for students studying agriculture, environmental science, sustainability, food systems, or those wishing to simply build a connection to nature by working outdoors and gain greater appreciation for the environment, biodiversity, and the effort required to produce food. As part of the farm crew, students will receive an entry-level farming experience and develop practical skills in vegetable crop production, soil management, agricultural mechanics, and leadership.

This position runs from May 25, 2025 - August 29, 2025, with the potential of extending employment term through the Fall semester.
