Spotted Turtle Monitoring Internship for DC Fisheries and Wildlife

Spotted Turtle Monitoring Volunteer Intern for DC Fisheries and Wildlife Division

Dates: March through June 2020 (flexible start and end dates)
Location: Washington, DC
Agency: Department of Energy and Environment, Fisheries and Wildlife Division
Number of Positions: Multiple Positions

Position Description: The spotted turtle protocol was established as part of a Competitive State
Wildlife Grant (CSWG), funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to assess
spotted turtle populations and habitat. Sites for this position are located in Washington, D.C and
pre-determined based on habitat. For each site, trapping and visual surveys will be conducted
looking for turtles, as outlined in the established protocol.

Duties: The interns will be required to work both with the biologist and independently with
other interns. Survey times will need to be between 7:00am-3:00pm from mid/late March
through June. For trapping surveys, traps will be set and in place for 4 nights and checked daily.
Turtles will need to be processed in accordance with the protocol. Visual surveys will be
conducted throughout the season as well, and turtles found will be processed.

Requirements: Interns must be available for several hours between 7:00am-3:00pm several
days a week. Because this position is open to multiple interns, times will be coordinated so there
is always one intern to assist the biologist on any given survey. Because of this, availability is
not required daily. Interns must read and become familiar with the protocol prior to starting.
This is a volunteer internship, therefore there is no salary. Applicants should be enrolled in or a
recent graduate of a college or university program in wildlife biology, conservation biology,
ecology, zoology, or a closely related field.
