The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Scientist III position to serve as a Fisheries Biologist in the west central (Rutland) region of the state. This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in a small state where you will be involved in all facets of fisheries research, management, and regulatory practice. The job involves working with the public, designing research projects, doing hands-on fieldwork, analyzing data, making management decisions, and providing technical assistance under various permits.
Responsibilities include:
-Planning, designing, and implementing various field studies for research, monitoring and management of game and non-game fish species and their habitats.
-Regularly evaluate and make recommendations pertaining to various state and federal regulatory permits to insure the protection of aquatic resources.
-Routinely collect, store, analyze, and report various biological data to make management recommendations.
-Conduct surveys and make recommendations to manage stocked fish.
-Routinely collect aquatic habitat and water chemistry data to monitor environmental conditions.
-Responsible for various administrative duties including budget, equipment needs, and hiring of temporary employees.
-Regularly interact with a variety of individuals from state, federal, watershed and angler groups, landowners, developers and their consultants.
-Supervise technical, clerical, temporary and contractual employees.
-Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Fish Program Manager.
Desired Skills/Knowledge:
-Considerable knowledge of the principles and concepts of fisheries biology and management; ecology; and conservation philosophy, concepts, and practices.
-Working knowledge of sampling techniques and various statistical and modeling programs.
-Knowledge of budget process, Federal and State grant reporting requirements.
-Ability to plan and conduct complex research, evaluate findings, and prepare analytical reports.
-Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
-Ability to operate field and laboratory equipment related to species and habitat sampling.
-Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree or higher in a natural resources field AND two (2) years or more of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
Bachelor's degree or higher in natural resources field or biology AND four (4) years or more of experience in a natural resources field.
