Sustainability Internship Scholarship

Application Opens: Monday, February 9, 2026

Application Closes: Monday, March 2, 2026

 

The Sustainability Internship Scholarship will help offset expenses associated with an unpaid internship.  Scholarship awards ranging from $500-$1,500 are available to help offset expenses.

 

The internship must be related to sustainability or with an organization that aligns with the UN’s organization aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

 

A secured unpaid internship with a nonprofit or government agency supervised by a professional in the field is required.

Intern for a Day + Spring Career & Internship Fair

 Happy Monday, AGNR Terps!

Intern for a Day orientations are open! 

Intern for a Day helps students to explore and become exposed to their interested career field and industry through a 1-day job shadowing or a 60-minute virtual informational interview. UMD undergraduate students participating in the Intern for a Day program this Spring 2026 must complete the orientation (required each semester). I’ve included a document outlining the IFAD student process and steps to receive the application for your reference.

The completed list of host sites will be available starting February 18, before applications will be sent out to those who complete the orientation. 

Two Options Available: 

1. ASYNCHRONOUS/VIRTUAL: You can access and enroll in the asynchronous orientation at: https://careers.umd.edu/explore-careers/career-exposure/intern-for-a-day 

2. IN-PERSON Option: If you prefer an in-person orientation, it will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2026 from 4-5PM in the University Career Center Resource Room. In-person orientation information can be found at the Handshake event page at: https://umd.joinhandshake.com/edu/events/1880924

Spring Career and Internship Fair:

The Fair will be held on February 24-26 from 11-4 in The Hotel. 

• Each day will have different employers for you to meet; you can view all employers who will be participating here. 

• I have also compiled a list of AGNR-specific employers participating in this spreadsheet, because employer registration is fluid, this list is updated every few days. 

Given how inconsistent and competitive the current job market is, I want to offer some additional advice to make the most out of your experience at the Career Fair:

• Now more than ever it’s important that you review the list of employers who will be attending each day to make a plan for your participation

• Approach employers with an open mind, and seek out organizations that you find interesting, not just ones that are hiring for your major

• Consider how the skills from your major may be applied in different fields—this can open you up to new opportunities!

PhD position working with bats

PhD Assistantship (Fall 2026) - Bat Monitoring and Movements

Description:  The goal of this research project is to enhance monitoring efforts for bats within exurban forests through the northeast region of the United States.  This project will include many planning meetings with biologists from the National Park Service and from state wildlife agencies, as well as, foresters and private forest landowners.  The student will be required to complete acoustic monitoring surveys based on the information needs of managers throughout the region.  Dissertation research will likely include local efforts to track bats using telemetry or motus tags.  The student will be advised by Dr. Tracy Rittenhouse within the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Connecticut.

Compensation: at least 1 semester of Research Assistantship per year, opportunities for Teaching Assistantships, and tuition waver & health benefits.

Hughes Center Seeks Summer Research and Policy Interns

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. (Hughes Center) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are seeking law and undergraduate student applicants interested in careers in agriculture, environmental conservation, forestry, policy, or law for the 2026 Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Summer Internship program. Multiple students will be selected for this eight-week internship, which includes a competitive salary and the opportunity to interact with leaders from the agricultural and environmental communities, as well as state agencies. The internship will begin on June 1st and conclude on July 24th, 2026. The internship will begin with an orientation session at Wye Research Center, and the interns will attend weekly meetings at Wye or elsewhere in the state. The remainder of the time, the interns will work virtually or attend meetings throughout Maryland.  The internship will introduce you to a number of complex natural resource issues, including but not limited to, Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts, agricultural practices, and local food production. During the course of the internship, you will meet diverse stakeholders and engage in the complex interaction between the agricultural and the environmental conservation and policy communities. You will be introduced to legislators and staff at state agencies as you work to resolve challenges. The internship is funded by organizations seeking to build leaders who are able to appreciate all sides of complex issues and develop solutions that consider environmental, economic, and industry needs as well as the needs of policymakers. Interns will: Work with Hughes Center and ALEI’s staff on research projects related to current agriculture, environmental, food system, and forestry issues; Participate in the multidisciplinary activities of the Hughes Center; Attend regional leadership meetings for agriculture, natural resources, and food systems; Have the opportunity to engage with researchers, state officials and agencies, environmental, and agricultural leaders; Support ALEI’s staff in the creation and administration of legal education resources and programs; Support Hughes Center and ALEI staff in developing proposals for future projects; and Enhance their research, communication, public speaking, and time management skills. Interns must: Be enrolled at a University of Maryland System university (UMCP, UMES, UMB) with anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later; Be able to make a commitment for the full length of the internship; Be a licensed driver with their own reliable transportation; Be able to attend the weekly meetings in person; and Be able to attend regional events throughout the summer. Some weekend or evening hours may be required. Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program – Applications Due March 27

The Rawlings Program is a selective, two-semester leadership experience that brings together students from all majors who are committed to creating transformative, inclusive, and lasting change. Fellows engage in:

•   Designing and implementing their own Community Action Project (CAP)
•   Serving in a political or nonprofit internship
•   Participate in a leadership course and professional development workshops
•   Engage directly with elected officials, nonprofit leaders, and community advocates  
•   Develop the skills to champion voices that might otherwise go unheard 
•   Receive a $1000 stipend upon completion of program requirements 

The program continues the legacy of Maryland Delegate Howard Peters “Pete” Rawlings, who dedicated his life to developing ethical and expert public leaders. We are seeking students who:  

•   Have at least two semesters remaining as of Fall 2026
•   Are motivated to create transformative, inclusive, and lasting change  
•   Are ready to step into leadership roles within their communities
