ANSC371- Agroecology and Environment Seminar and Study Abroad- Seats Open

Dear Students,

Do you have room in your schedule for one more credit this fall? Are you interested in studying abroad this winter and completing some of your Gen Ed requirements at the same time? We are looking to fill more seats in our ANSC371 course, so please read on to learn more about the course!

This fall we are offering ANSC371, the first course in a two-part study abroad experience. ANSC371 is a one credit seminar course which will lead into the 2-credit study abroad course, ANSC372, which takes place over the winter term. The seminar course this fall will discuss a broad range of topics relating to agriculture in developing countries, and the winter travel abroad course will involve learning techniques in agroecology with hands-on activities, farm visits, and eco-tours.

Students will learn how developing countries are building their agricultural economies to address multiple goals including reducing poverty, improving food security, as well as decreasing impacts from climate change and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The historical, political, and social context will be discussed, and perspectives will be provided from representatives from diverse groups including farm workers, farm owners, women, and indigenous peoples. Students will discuss examples of sustainable agroecology and incentives and impediments to their implementation.

Taking ANSC371 and 372 in combination will earn both SP and CC Gen Ed credits.

If you have additional questions about the course or the study abroad experience please reach out to the course instructor, Dr. Rick Kohn rkohn@umd.edu.
