Two internships at UMD, Baltimore

MPower is sponsoring two paid summer 2025 projects for Agriculture and Natural Resources students with faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Applications will open in January 2025 and will close in late February.

1. Identifying Legal Challenges to Participation in Maryland’s Farm to Institution Local Food Purchasing Program

Project lead: Margaret Todd, JD, Senior Legal Specialist and Managing Director for the Agricultural Law Education Initiative at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Carey School of Law.

Ideal candidate: Individuals with an interest and /or background in animal agriculture production and marketing, agricultural law, environmental law, local food systems, and procurement policy.

2. Resources for Small and Very Small Livestock, Poultry, and Seafood Production Processing

NOAA Hollings Scholarship for Environmental Studies - Rising Sophomores!

 Attention rising SOPHOMORES studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences or policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus!


The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes for 1st & 2nd Year Students - Now Open!

 If you can imagine spending three to four weeks immersed in the United Kingdom, where academic experiences meet cultural excursions, then the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are made for students like you, especially if you haven't traveled much outside of North America!


With UK Summer Institutes from Arts, Activism and Social Justice to Environment and Sustainability, you’ll blend academics with practical insights to expand your understanding of your chosen discipline. Beyond textbooks, you will be able to explore the culture and heritage of the UK, enhancing your understanding of the world in ways no classroom can alone.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission and its partner institutions cover program costs, including airfare, tuition, accommodation, and, in some cases, a daily allowance for meals.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens;
  • have a GPA of 3.6 or higher
  • be 18 or older;

  • cannot have spent more than 4 weeks outside the U.S. in the last 5 years. Exceptions are made for refugees and/or students from a different cultural background who have spent time abroad due to family emergencies.
Please note: First-generation college students and students who receive or are eligible for need-based aid are encouraged to apply.

Summer Technician - USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station

 Summer Technician Position (GS-05; $18.96/hour) with USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station 

We are announcing a job opportunity for Summer 2025 with the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station (NRS) starting mid-May and continuing through mid-August, 2025.  The position will be based in Kane, Pennsylvania.  In this position, employees will be collecting pre-treatment data on a new experiment that the NRS is conducting in partnership with the University of Kentucky and the Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of Forestry.  The experiment examines species richness, growth, and abundance of tree seedlings in response to fertilization and fungicide applications as silvicultural tools to promote tree diversity in forest ecosystems.  

Specific duties to this job and expertise required will include locating study areas, establishing study plots, setting up equipment for field studies, plant identification/botany, measuring vegetation (e.g., abundance, growth, mortality) and site (e.g., soil) data, collecting vegetation specimens, and entering and summarizing data.   

Housing is available at a modest cost at the Kane Experimental Forest and the work crew will be provided with vehicles to get to and from field sites.

Summer 2025 research opportunities for undergraduates

Applications are now being accepted for the Summer REU Program in Marine Science at the University of Delaware, an NSF-Funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. 

The program will take place from June 2 to August 8, 2025, at the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp campus in the beach community of Lewes, located on the shores of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.  Interns will work with faculty in a research-intensive setting on a research topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology, marine geology, biogeochemistry, or a related area. In addition to hands-on research experience, student support includes a $7,200 stipend, campus housing, and travel assistance. The deadline to apply is February 14, 2025

paid internship - National Park Service

We are seeking 4 Invasive Plant Management Individual Placements who will work on a field crew to control invasive plant species with mechanical and chemical control methods at sites throughout the National Capital Region. 

This 40-week internship runs from Feb. 10th, 2025 to Nov. 14th, 2025 and is based out of Washington, D.C. Since housing is not provided, we are seeking candidates within a commutable distance to the D.C. office. Since this is a full-time internship, we are seeking alumni and recent grads with experience in field work. 

This position pays $600/week and the intern will also receive a $4,826.50 AmeriCorps Segal Education award upon successful completion that can be used to pay back federal student loans or for additional schooling.

This role requires Spanish fluency, strong people skills, and a collaborative approach, as we work with organizational and municipal partners and communities in Baltimore to implement habitat restoration projects. We will also mobilize residents to advance climate-resilient policies and increase investments in public green spaces and natural climate solutions.

  • Who is DSAC?
    • The Dean’s Student Advisory Council envisions an academic experience that is equitable, accessible, and of high quality for all students in AGNR. 

  • What do we do?
    • "The Dean’s Student Advisory Council will be a forum of and for the students of AGNR. The Council will serve the College’s student body by facilitating dialogue and relationship-building among students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Members will evaluate College and Department policies and disseminate information to students. The Council will listen to student concerns, and advocate on their behalf to the Dean’s Office and Department Chairs. As necessary and possible, the Council will unite the AGNR student body for professional and social events and causes."

  • Who can join DSAC?
    • Undergraduate students pursuing an AGNR major are invited to apply! The council aims to be a representation of the college's diverse student body, including members from all college departments/programs and other key student populations.

  • What is the time commitment?
    • Meetings: The council meets ~9 times each semester; once every two weeks (typically in the evening) with an extra meeting or two added as needed for event prep.
    • Events: We host two events per semester; one is our popular Midterm Support Kit event and the other is a forum/open meeting featuring the Dean(s) of AGNR.

Paul Sprowl | The Zeller Summer Scholarship in Medicinal Botany

 

Paul Sprowl, 2024 Zeller Scholar, conducted research at the Quave Research Group, focusing on the medicinal properties of the American Beautyberry and its potential to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Research involved utilizing various extraction techniques and performing partitioning to isolate bioactive compounds from the plant material. Sprowl’s research was funded by The Garden Club of America Zeller Summer Scholarship in Medicinal Botany.
