Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES) summer school/paid internships
Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES) summer school/paid internshipsAdvanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES), sponsored by the University of Virginia Advanced Research Computing Services (ARCS) group, NASA, and U.Va.’s Department of Environmental Sciences, is an exciting opportunity for students interested in computational modeling for atmospheric, ocean, climate, geophysical, and other Earth sciences. Students enrolled in the ACES program acquire hands-on application computing experience as well as training in the essentials of software engineering and high-performance computing.A total of 20 students will be selected to attend the summer school on grounds at the University of Virginia. They will then be placed in 8-week paid internship programs at various NASA research centers across the country. Some previous programming experience is helpful but is not required. Students with advanced computer science skills who are interested in applications for Earth sciences are also encouraged to apply. Those admitted to the summer school will be provided housing, two meals per day during the work week, and a generous stipend for all other meals. Travel expenses are covered for up to a maximum of $750 per student. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. We accept graduate students and undergraduates who will be completing their third or fourth years of study.Important Dates for ACES 2017:Application Deadline: March 1Summer School: May31-June16Internships: June 19-August 11APPLY TODAY!
Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU
Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.
In particular, we encourage students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. We believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.
We are accepting applications through February 15. Please visit our website to find out more (www.mdsg.umd.edu/reu) or drop me a note at reu@mdsg.umd.edu.

Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference
Are you looking for a professional development opportunity in sustainability?
Attend the 12th annual Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference being held Monday, March 27-Tuesday, March 28 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center.
This year's conference includes keynote speaker Chef Barton Seaver, energy financing and multi-stakeholder collaboration pre-conference workshops, a food truck festival on Monday night, and a Student Summit on Sunday, March 26.
For the Student Summit, please share this information with any interested UMD students. The call for proposals is currently open and closes on Monday, January 30. This a great opportunity to network with fellow, like-minded students from other universities and learn more about different campuses' sustainability efforts and education.
Conference registration is currently open and includes discounted rates for University System of Maryland employees and students. Early bird rates are available until Sunday, February 12.

Want to change majors into ENST?
Changing majors is a HUGE decision, especially when it's into a STEM major. You should research jobs, classes, talk with students in that major. Talk with a Peer Mentor http://agnr.umd.edu/students/undergraduate-students/peer-mentors Look through the different concentrations and their required classes at http://enst.umd.edu/undergraduate/advising. Look through available internship and job openings on our blog at http://enstadvising.blogspot.com/. Do you picture yourself in that field? Can you handle the rigorous math and science courses?
If you feel confident that you want to change into ENST, please follow these steps:

Spring 2017 Schedule Adjustment
UMD students have until the 10th day of classes to adjust their schedule. That means you can drop a class without a W on your final transcript by the 10th day of classes (February 7, 2017). After that day, and before April 5, 2017, any class(es) dropped from the semester will show up with a W.
If you are on the waitlist for a class, go to class and reach out to the professor and ask what the chances are you'll get in. Keep looking for alternative classes in case you don't get in within the 10th day of classes.
