The Kent Conservation District, in cooperation with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, is seeking a Herpetologist within the Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Species Conservation and Research Program.  This program is responsible for conducting research and monitoring activities on Delaware’s wildlife (plants and animals) and developing actions to protect, conserve, and promote responsible resource management of these species for wildlife related recreational and educational opportunities.

Delaware plays a critical role in the conservation of many reptile and amphibian species. The focus of the position will be to conserve and manage these species by determining the distribution and relative abundance of reptiles and amphibians across Delaware and by developing and implementing species management plans.  This position will conduct field surveys, prepare technical reports, and oversee a large volunteer network of citizen scientists that help collect information on species distribution.  Surveys will also be completed to determine the extent of various factors negatively impacting herps in Delaware including ranavirus, chytrid fungus, pollutants, habitat loss, road mortality and other causes.  The incumbent will also periodically assist other biologists on projects, serve on regional and national science and planning teams and technical committees, and assist with other conservation planning activities as needed.  We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic biologist with analytical, writing, and wetland experience to join our team.  

Responsibilities:   
         Lead reptile and amphibian research and monitoring activities for Delaware. This includes capture, marking, and processing many species of herpetofauna.
         Lead investigator for managing, conducting research, and determining distribution of the federally endangered bog turtle within Delaware. 
         Determine impacts of potential development on endangered herpetofauna.
         Develop/coordinate habitat management efforts for bog turtles and other rare species.
         Develop a monitoring program for herps to determine species richness and abundance across the state.
         Coordinate and lead a large team of volunteers to conduct herp monitoring work.
         Develop and implement the Delaware Herpetofauna Conservation Plan.
         Organize, process, and analyze large amounts of data.
         Ensure data is disseminated to partners in a timely manner.
         Oversee contracts.
         Work with seasonal and/or contractual staff.
         Respond to constituent concerns and conduct outreach as needed.
         Develop and administer grants ensuring various deadlines are met.
         Represent the Division of Fish and Wildlife on various technical committees.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field. 
  2. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met. 
  3. Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data. 
  4. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. 
  5. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. 
  6. Six months experience in technical report writing. 
  7. Valid driver's license and willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the state and on occasional out-of-state and overnight trips.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in Wildlife Biology or closely related field.
  2. Possession of scientific prominence or recognition with publication in a scientific or trade journal.
  3. Six months experience with the capture, marking, and processing of reptiles and amphibians.

Course description:

This course is an examination of the influences of environmental constraints on animal function and energetic efficiency in the context of abiotic conditions in the habitats occupied by individuals.  The abiotic environment is being rapidly altered due to climate change and increasing severity of other anthropogenic impacts on natural habitats. This course evaluates these changes as influencing variables on animal functions that underlie fitness and thus the ecology of the species and their communities.  Aquatic and terrestrial animals are considered, although most emphasis is placed on aquatic and semi-aquatic species. 



Outcomes:

1.  Students will gain an appreciation of physiological and bioenergetic processes as they relate to environmental conditions.

2.  They will understand the impacts of major abiotic stressors (temperature, salinity/water hardness, water quality, contaminants) on integrated functions (physiological, behavioral) that may entail fitness costs, including thermal responses, osmotic exchange, feeding and assimilation efficiencies, gas exchange, and excretion.

3.  Functional responses to stressors will be evaluated with respect to influences on energy allocation among maintenance and production pathways.

4.  Ultimately the students will be able to view bioenergetic processes that underlie population and community-level processes from the perspective of direct environmental influences on functional attributes of the individuals. 


Assessment:

Grades will be assigned based on the scores obtained on three in-class examinations, an in-class presentation, class participation, and a final term paper (600-level students only). 

Format Overview:

This is a lecture-based course offered over the Interactive Video Network, originating at Chesapeake Biological Laboratory.  Lectures are supplemented with required readings from the primary literature.  Course format includes three examinations, a student presentation, and a term paper (the latter for 600-level students only).  

Materials:

Lecture notes are provided.  Lecture material is largely derived from the primary literature.  Readings from the literature will be assigned.  There is no text book required for this course.  

Other information:

This course is offered for graduate students (600 level) and advanced undergraduate students (400 level) having completed an undergraduate course in general ecology.

UTAP Student Position

AGNR Academic Programs is looking to place an undergraduate technology (UTAP) student with an AGNR faculty member for the spring 2017 semester to assist with educational technology projects in the classroom. 
 
UTAP Students receive the following training:
 
•       Faculty support and an overview of pedagogical issues
•       Designing and constructing a website using HTML and dreamweaver
•       Incorporating and manipulating digital audio, video, and images
•       Presentation design in Microsoft PowerPoint, Camtasia, and Prezi
•       Designing and maintaining ELMS course spaces
•       Common instructional technologies such as wikis, blogs, RSS feeds, podcasts, etc.
 
In addition to in-class workshops, students complete project assignments such as creating presentations, designing course websites, and building ELMS course spaces. Our UTAP students were extremely successful in their fall course and are very excited to work with a faculty member in the spring semester.
 
UTAP students work up to 10 hours/week, are guaranteed $8.00/hour and, 
as an incentive, AGNR Academic Programs pays 50% of their salary.

Science Communication Internship

Environmental Health Internships

CONSERVE (COordinating Nontraditional Sustainable watER Use in Variable climatEs) is a Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food, and Health.  Our leading team of scientists and educators are investigating sources of nontraditional irrigation water that can provide safe, transformative on‐farm solutions for food crops and reduce the nation’s agricultural water challenges that are exacerbated by climate change. With projects located in the Mid-Atlantic and Southwest, we are looking for undergraduate student interns to assist us in our research and education efforts.

The 8-week internship will start on June 12, 2017, ending on August 11, 2017. Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000. Students are responsible for their own lodging and any affiliated moving expenses. We are accepting applications from now until March 10

The following positions are available:

Location: University of Arizona (Tucson)
Position Information: The student intern will assist in collecting water samples, analyzing samples for microbiological parameters, interpreting data, and communicating scientific findings with stakeholders across the state of AZ. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn advanced microbiological techniques and develop skills in translating complex scientific information to a variety of stakeholder audiences including growers, packers, shippers, irrigation districts, and other scientists

Location: University of Delaware (Newark)
Position Information: The intern will be involved in the collection of large amounts of water from field sites. The student will utilize microbiological and molecular biology tools for the detection of viruses and protozoa from water samples. Work will also involve statistical analysis along with both written and oral communication of data. This intern will participate in lab meetings and other CONSERVE activities. Among those CONSERVE activities include use of novel water filtration systems and education related to irrigation water.

Location: University of Delaware (Newark)
Position Information: The intern will assist the project team in using field and laboratory experimental techniques to understand how people respond to various scenarios and information as a means of predicting how people behave in the real world. The candidate will also assist with obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and certification, identifying produce grown with various irrigation methods, developing an experiment design and decision platform, administering studies, analyzing and presenting data, and developing learning materials based on research.

Location: University of Maryland (College Park) 
Position Information: This position will focus on irrigation water quality, particularly the microbial characterization of water used for irrigation, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes in water used for irrigation, the potential for biofilm formation in irrigation water distribution systems, and the characterization of human pathogens found in irrigation water and their virulence and biofilm formation traits. The work will involve both field sampling and laboratory analysis. Methods used will include standard microbiological methods, molecular biology methods and some bioinformatics.

Location: USDA Agricultural Research Service (Beltsville, MD)
Position Information: The intern will help sampling teams in the field collect appropriate surface and reclaimed water samples. The student will also be asked to perform quantitative and qualitative microbial analysis for bacterial pathogens in irrigation and reclaimed water samples. The intern will be responsible for assisting microbial detection and confirmation of enteric pathogens recovered from water samples, and confirming culture recovery results with PCR assays. The intern will also be responsible for constructing and setting up zero-valent iron filters in the laboratory and on the farm. This will include different filter designs with different combinations of sand and iron appropriate for different water types that are being analyzed. Overall, this position will provide exposure to environmental, food, and molecular biology techniques to the intern.

Udall Scholarship

The Udall Scholarship Program awards merit-based scholarships for college sophomores and juniors pursuing studies leading to a public service career in tribal health, public policy, or the environment. Two- and four-year college students are encouraged to apply. Scholars participate in a five-day orientation in Arizona to learn from and network with experts, their peers, and members of the Udall family. The award includes life-time membership in the Udall alumni community, a vibrant professional organization offering job and internship opportunities, and up to $7,000 for tuition, fees, room and board, and books and supplies. Applications must be submitted through Udall faculty representative at the student's college or university. In 2017, 60 awards will be made; we anticipate awarding up to 20 of these in the tribal public policy and tribal health categories. The application deadline is March 15, 2017.

The Native American Congressional Internship

The Native American Congressional Internship program is a fully-funded, ten-week summer internship in Washington, DC, for Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate, graduate, and law students. Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with public officials, and experience an inside view of the federal government. Description
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative Northeast program will be hiring 2-4 student contractors/field technicians in 2017. Technicians will be hired for the spring & summer period (early March through July 2017). Technicians may have the possibility of extension for work during the 2017 fall field season (September through October) dependent on availability of funding.

These technicians will conduct amphibian surveys in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and the District of Columbia. The technicians will work on a team that surveys for amphibians within National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges in the Mid-Atlantic region, including work in the mountains of Shenandoah National Park. Surveys will include wetland-associated amphibians as well as stream salamander and terrestrial salamander populations. Field work involves identifying, catching, measuring, and marking amphibians, as well as collecting water quality and environmental data. The students will be required to conduct field surveys using techniques including visual encounter surveys, dip netting, stream transect searches, temporary removal sampling, and conducting a mark-recapture study using visual implant elastomer. All fieldwork will be conducted as part of teams of 2-4 people, so a demonstrated ability and desire to work effectively with a group is imperative. Additional assistance conducting surveys involving the federally endangered Shenandoah salamander and experiments with captive amphibian populations may also be required.
Qualifications
The position requires completion of academic coursework related to wildlife biology. Previous field experience with amphibians common in the Northeast US is highly recommended. The position requires the use of GPS units, digital cameras, and computer software for data entry and presentation (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Access). Technicians may also be asked to mark amphibians with injectable florescent elastomer and take voucher specimens related to amphibian disease studies. Most of the work is outdoors, sometimes under harsh or hot conditions or in rain/snow. Technicians must be in good physical condition, as the job requires long hours in the field (including some night-time surveys) and hiking with up to 25 pounds of equipment for extended periods of time on rocky, steep terrain. The technicians must be willing to go on overnight field trips to Shenandoah National Park, VA, and other parks throughout the northeastern US, which will typically last 4-12 days at a time. Accommodations for overnight field work will be provided.

Technicians must be able to work at least 40 hours per week. Technicians are responsible for all costs of transportation to and from Patuxent. Government vehicles will be provided for all field work initiated from Patuxent. Housing costs are not included, but some housing may be available at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center; please contact Andrew Dietrich if you have questions. Every attempt will be made to assist technicians in finding affordable housing in the area. Approximate wages are $13-16/hour; overtime pay is not provided.
Only applicants who are current or recent students (graduated within 12 months of the position’s start date) are eligible for these student contractor positions. Foreign students are not eligible for these positions.

Summer Chesapeake Bay Undergraduate Research Internship

Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.

In particular, we encourage students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. We believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.
