Research assistant position
Mapping alternative Urban Food Provisioning Networks
2 interns, $15/hr. plus intern fringe rate of 7.6%
Location: Primarily Baltimore City Extension Office
Mentors: Neith Little (UMD Extension), Dr. Jose-Luís Izursa (ENST), Dr. Jen Shaffer (ANTH)
This project is a regional research collaboration between University of Rhode Island, University of Maryland, and University of the District of Columbia. The project focuses on food self-provisioning (FSP) activities as elements in vibrant networks weaving together diverse agents, places, and practices ranging from backyard gardeners to youth educators, on-shore fishing spots to pop-up markets, and communal harvests to mutual food aid delivery. We refer to these networks as alternative urban food provisioning networks (AUFPNs). The deadline for submitting a resume and cover letter/statement of interest is 11:59pm on Friday, March 29, 2024.
The two interns would work together to assist the Maryland team (Ms. Little, Dr. Izursa, Dr. Shaffer, and graduate students Reilly Becchina and Intan Kumbayoni). The interns would be based out of the Baltimore City Extension Office, at 6615 Reisterstown Road, Suite 201, Baltimore, MD. Travel would be required to gardens and fishing sites throughout the Baltimore area, and to College Park, MD. The interns’ primary activities would be to identify and map gardens and fishing sites in the Baltimore area. They would assist with preliminary outreach to potential sites, with focus groups, and with interviews. The interns would learn about urban gardening and fishing, and how to conduct environmental anthropology/environmental science research. Aquaponic On-Farm Demonstrations
1 intern, $15/hr. plus intern fringe rate of 7.6%
Location: Primarily Baltimore City Extension Office

The intern will assist with a research and education project teaching farmers how to build and operate aquaponics farming systems. Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish in tanks and raising plants in water, in an integrated system. The intern would assist with building aquaponics demonstration systems on two farms in Maryland, with monitoring fish and plant growth, and with organizing educational trainings for farmers.
The intern would be based out of the Baltimore City Extension Office, at 6615 Reisterstown Road, Suite 201, Baltimore, MD. Travel would be required to College Park, MD and to farms located elsewhere in Maryland including Boonsboro, Gaithersburg, Baltimore City, and Prince George’s County. The intern would learn how to raise fish and plants using aquaponic and hydroponic methods and how to plan educational events. The deadline to apply is March 29. Science Communications and Outreach Internship (One Student)

This internship is ideal for someone interested in entering the field of agricultural and environmental communications and outreach, public relations, or Extension.

Russ Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Internship Program (Multiple Students)
This is a collaborative internship program between the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology and the University of Maryland Agriculture Law Education Initiative. Undergraduate students at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and also law students enrolled at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law who are interested in careers in agriculture, environmental conservation, forestry, and/or policy are encouraged to apply.
The internship will introduce students to a number of complex natural resource issues, including but not limited to, Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts, agricultural practices, and local food production. During the course of the internship, students will meet diverse stakeholders and engage in the complex interaction between the agricultural and environmental conservation and policy communities. They will be introduced to legislators and staff at state agencies as they work to resolve challenges. The internship is funded by organizations seeking to build leaders who are able to appreciate all sides of complex issues and develop solutions that consider the needs of industry, environment, economy and policymakers.

Time is running out to apply for Maryland Sea Grant's Competitive Graduate Research Fellowship!
Maryland Sea Grant (MDSG) is pleased to announce the Maryland Sea Grant Competitive Graduate Research Fellowship. Students apply for a two-year Maryland Sea Grant fellowship that provides stipend, fringe benefits, a tuition remission allowance, and a travel allowance. To be eligible, graduate students must be enrolled in a graduate degree program at a Maryland or Washington, DC academic institution and engaged in research that is relevant to Maryland and the MDSG Strategic Plan 2024-2027. In addition to financial support, these opportunities will provide additional professional development opportunities in science communication, the science-to-management process, and/or other relevant skills.

Award Information
The two year fellowships will provide a stipend ($34,000), fringe benefits, tuition remission, and a $2,000 travel allowance for the fellow. Fellows will be paid as graduate research assistants by Maryland Sea Grant, a University System of Maryland institution, following the same model and terms as our Maryland Sea Grant Research Fellowships program. Continued support after the first year will be contingent upon satisfactory performance by the Fellow and the availability of federal funds. The anticipated start date is the fall semester 2024.
Applications must be submitted online by March 28, 2024 at 5:00 PM to MDSG’s proposal system, eSeaGrant. The submission system closes promptly and MDSG will not accept late proposals, so allow ample time to submit your proposal before the deadline.
