SCDNR Bat Culvert Technician Position, 5 months
Position description: The seasonal bat technician will assist the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources in 2021/2022 winter bat monitoring, conducting surveys for bats culverts in the Sandhills and Coastal Plain ecoregions of South Carolina. Duties include collecting bat species and count information, culvert measurement data, and entering all data into the ArcGIS Survey123 app. SCDNR vehicle will be provided. If a few overnights for the longest distances from Columbia are necessary, housing and per diem ($35/day) will be provided.
Applicants must have a high school diploma OR at least 3 months of experience in wildlife or fisheries work. Applicants must also have a valid driver's license and be comfortable driving long distances between Columbia, SC and the SC Coastal Plain. Applicants should be able to work under adverse field conditions (ex: dark, wet, cold) and be in good physical condition to hike up and down embankments and crouch and hike through road culverts where encounters with snakes, alligators, biting insects, etc. are possible. Applicants should also be familiar with computer-based data entry.
Start Date: Nov 1 or Nov 15, 2021 (flexible depending on availability)
Duration: 5 months. End date March 31, 2022 or Apr 15, 2022 depending on start date.
Salary: $12/hr, 40 hrs/week.
