MS Assistantship – Tri-colored bat winter roost use and torpor patterns
We are currently looking to fill a MS position to determine whether tri-colored bats that do not use caves and mines during winter are susceptible to white-nose syndrome. Specifically, the identified student will study winter roost use and selection, torpor patterns, and feeding activity of tri-colored bats that roost in bridges and other structures at the Savannah River Site in Aiken and Barnwell Counties, SC. To address these questions, the student will radio track tri-colored bats, conduct vegetation sampling, examine fecal pellets, and analyze skin temperature data.
The student will be based at Clemson University, and jointly advised by Dr. Susan Loeb and Dr. David Jachowski. Funding for the salary of the MS student is secured for 2 years. The position will start November 2017.
Applicants must possess a BS degree in wildlife biology, ecology or related field, be U.S. citizens, and have a valid driver’s license. Applicants that have experience capturing, handling, and tracking bats are preferred. Demonstrated ability to work under difficult field conditions (heat, cold, rough terrain, flooded areas) is required. A stipend will be provided for 2 years and tuition will be covered. However, the student is responsible for paying fees and health insurance.
