NPS Natural Resource Data Management Intern (Part-Time)
The U. S. National Park Service National Capital Region is seeking a paid graduate level student with a background in GIS, Environmental Science, and /or Policy who will convert data from paper reports and files into electronic databases and geospatial products.  The intern will work closely with the Regional Natural Resource Specialist and will be responsible for collecting and synthesizing various pre-determined information necessary for initiating the aforementioned reports and strategies, as well as, reviewing various compliance documents.
This position will begin as soon as possible and continue for 3 months to 2 years depending on the student’s interest and available funding.  Duty station is flexible within units of the National Capital Region, but visits to the Office of Natural Resources and Science in Washington, DC will be necessary.  The intern will also have the opportunity to visit several parks throughout the National Capital Region, and to assist a number of other programs with field work.  
The Office of Natural Resources and Science is based in Washington, DC and works within the 15 parks of the National Capital Region.  Program areas include wildlife, integrated pest management, vegetation management, exotic plant management, inventory and monitoring network, aquatic ecology, and the urban ecology research learning alliance.
Responsibilities:
Working approximately 20 to 25 hours per week, the incumbent will support the Natural Resources Specialist. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Convert data from paper reports and files into electronic databases and geospatial products.  
  • Work closely with the Regional Natural Resource Specialist and collect and synthesize various pre-determined information necessary for initiating the aforementioned reports and strategies, as well as, reviewing various compliance documents.

Please note that this is a part-time position and the work schedule will not exceed an average of 29 hours per week.
Required Qualifications:
  • Students must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in the spring of 2018 and should anticipate being enrolled in the fall semester.
  • If applying as a Permanent Resident Authorized to Work in the US, must have been a resident for at least 3 years to be eligible for Office of Personnel Management background check required for access to NPS internal systems
  • Experience with ArcGIS 10.5, Pro and Online; Microsoft Office suite; and have a basic understanding of the ability to digitize records.  
  • Reliable transportation to work sites
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; and
  • Proven experience of successfully meeting deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working with natural resource data
  • Prior experience with federal data standards
