Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Responsible for maintenance of farm and specialized agricultural research machinery, and supervision of subordinate(s). Work in conjunction with Program Manager to: coordinate activities for researchers and others performing research or extension activities at Wye Research and Education Center, perform nutrient and pesticide application using traditional and nontraditional application equipment, perform necessary activities involving the Maryland Crop Improvement Association’s (MCIA) Foundation Seed Production, carry out necessary field work associated with an agricultural research farm program, maintain farm records and develop nutrient management plans as well as general farm research planning. In the absence of the Program Manager, employee will assume the responsibilities of the Program Manager.

Qualifications:
Required 
● High School diploma or GED (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
● Six years progressively responsible experience in agriculture work, four years of which must have been in laboratory or field research and two years of which must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.
● Valid State of Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent
● Valid State of Maryland Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Non Tractor-Trailer - obtain within first year of employment
● Certified Crop Advisor - obtain 3 years of employment
● Maryland Nutrient Management Consultant - obtain 18 months of employment
● Maryland Public Agency Applicator’s Certificate - obtain 18 months of employment

Preferred Knowledge and Skills
● Comprehensive knowledge of farming practices, farm vehicle operation and precision agriculture equipment.
● Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in scientific methods and the use of related laboratory equipment.
● Competency with the use of mathematics and geometry to perform equipment calibrations, to determine areas, volumes, weights, proportions, conversions and ability to perform mathematical calculations.
● Ability to use computers and spreadsheet and word processing software; competency in oral and written communication skills, including use of e-mail.
● Ability to supervise and train agricultural technicians and support staff; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to effectively talk to groups and make oral presentations and lead discussions.
● Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Additional Information:
Lift and transport supplies, tools, and equipment, to climb, working from ladders, and to perform extensive standing and walking; to work in extreme weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Available for on-call emergencies after hours, weekends and holidays may be required.

Salary & Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with experience, with base salary starting at $45,432. The University of Maryland offers an extensive benefits package.
