Bat ecology technician

 

Seasonal Technician- Tri-colored Bat Ecology- Clemson University

Start/End- 09/01/2022-11/01/2022 (Dates are approximate)

Job Description- The Clemson University Wildlife and Fisheries Program is seeking one seasonal technician to assist a graduate student with a study on fall foraging site selection, roost site selection, and torpor patterns of tri-colored bats (Perimyotis subflavus) in northwestern South Carolina near Clemson. Work will be conducted in the Andrew Pickens Ranger District (APD) of the Sumter National Forest. The start date will be September 1st, and work will continue through November 1st (dates are approximate). This is a 40-hr/week position with irregular hours; most work being conducted after dark. A field vehicle will be provided but there will be no housing accommodations. 

Primary job duties include:

  • Assist with the capturing and tagging of bats in the APD

  • Tracking radio-tagged bats to roost sites on a daily basis

  • Collecting torpor data by setting up monitors at roost trees

  • Collecting habitat/vegetation data

  • Placing acoustic detectors at designated locations throughout the APD

  • Maintaining equipment 

  • Completing data entry

  • Performing WNS decontamination procedures

Qualifications-

  • Must have a B.S. in Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, Zoology, or another related field 

  • Must be comfortable working collaboratively or independently if asked to 

  • Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic 

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Proficient at orienteering 

  • Must be comfortable walking long distances in rough terrain 

  • Must be comfortable working after dark in unpleasant weather

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Must be a U.S. citizen 

Additional experience that is preferred but not required: radio-telemetry proficiency, knowledge of acoustic monitoring, mist-netting experience, bat handling experience, and use of handheld GPS units. Minorities and other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

USGS Hydrologist/Geomorphologist

The USGS at the Maryland-Delaware-DC Water Science Center in Baltimore, Maryland is hiring a Recent Graduate Hydrologist/Geomorphologist as a GS-11 or -12 ($74,950-$116,788).

 

The candidate can expect to work on a variety of sediment and geomorphic-related projects and studies. These may include sediment fingerprinting studies, trend analyses and assessments of habitat and channel change in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, and involvement in national programs modeling sediment across the US. NPS Paid Internships

 


The U. S. National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region (NCR), Office of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) is seeking to fill paid internship positions. Interns will work closely with the NPS Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance’s Science Education Coordinator. 

UERLA is a National Park Service Research Learning Center that serves 16 parks in National Capital Region. They translate complex research results into readily understandable information, providing research, education, and technical assistance for parks. UERLA also provides science communication outreach to park managers and external audiences via websites, workshops, and publications. UERLA maintains research and education partnerships with universities, not-for- profit, education, and other federal agencies. The education activities of UERLA include providing training opportunities for NPS staff and partners, participating in science education programs, and building external partnerships that support science education in parks. Within the Natural Resources and Science Office, other science programs, such as botany, wildlife, geology, air resources, and inventory and monitoring, aquatic ecology work with the Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance on interdisciplinary projects.

Students must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland. The positions are University of Maryland paid internships. Students should consult with their academic advisor to determine if they can also receive academic credit for their internship.

The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region (NCR), Office of Natural Resources and Science (NRS) Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance (UERLA) is seeking a graduate student or an upper-level undergraduate student with interest in Teaching, Science Education, Formal Educational Settings, Developing Science Education Methods, and/or related fields. Science topics will include Climate Change Science. The Science Lesson Plans (In-person & Virtual) Intern will evaluate existing lesson plans for President’s Park and the White House Visitor Center educational programs. Programs will be updated to reflect most recent standards and current relevant scientific data. Intern will adapt lesson plans from in-person to virtual settings. Professional development experience for the intern will include networking, with NPS educational staff and scientific subject matter experts, and developing familiarity with online systems such as ViewSonic Board, Plickers, Kahoots to identify support lessons already on the platforms. Intern will distribute updated and approved lessons from the Park to approved online sites. The intern will provide at least one presentation to instruct staff on the best practices for instruction using the updated lessons including for a remote audience. Lessons will center on Park mission, goals, and engagement priorities at President’s Park.

The intern will work closely with the Educational Team at President’s Park and the White House Visitor Center, and the NPS Urban Ecology Research Learning Alliance’s Science Education Coordinator. We anticipate that the internship will begin in mid-summer of 2022 and continue through December of 2023. Start and end dates are negotiable. Hours are part-time not to exceed 480 hours. The bulk of work is on site at the White House Visitor Center and occasional teleworking.

Post-Docs in UMD ENST

 

Two Postdoctoral Associate positions available at the University of Maryland in Manure Processing and Anaerobic Digestion Policy


We have two postdoctoral positions available starting in August 2022 at the University of Maryland. One successful candidate should have a background on dairy, poultry, beef, or swine manure management, nutrient content of manure, and the effect using anaerobic digestion to transform manure and food waste feedstocks. A second candidate should have knowledge on the effect of nutrient management and US state policies on the economics of anaerobic digestion implementation, including climate change implications of digestion technology implementation compared to other manure technologies. Background knowledge and experience is needed in anaerobic digestion of manure or manure+food waste co-digestion, nutrient management, life cycle assessment, and greenhouse gas emissions from digestion implementation. These positions will require extensive knowledge of US policies associated with manure and anaerobic digestion with only minimum work in laboratory analytics.

A PhD is required in a relevant field, such as engineering, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, agricultural economics, agricultural policy, or soil science. Both post-doc positions are one-year, 100% research positions, with no teaching responsibilities.

 

One successful applicant will be primarily located at College Park, Maryland in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology (enst.umd.edu), and one applicant will be primarily located in Queenstown, MD at the Wye Research and Education Center (https://agnr.umd.edu/research/research-and-education-centers-locations/wye-research-education-center), but travel around the state of Maryland is expected, with a valid driver's license.

Position Summary  

The GreenKids Director supervises all aspects of ANS environmental education programming in partnership with Pre-K to grade 12 schools. This critical leadership position advances the organization’s strategic goal of building environmental literacy in public school systems in the DMV region. Salary range $65,000-$75,000 depending on qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees all work of ANS staff delivering school-based programs, including hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff 

  • Maintains and expands program connections with all school system partners in Maryland, DC, and Virginia, including periodic updating of MOUs and partnership letters

  • Leads fundraising efforts, including writing grant proposals and grant reports in collaboration with grant writers, communicating with and hosting funders, tracking progress on fundraising goals, and meeting regularly with the Development Department

  • Manages and tracks GreenKids budget and maintains program adherence to budget limits and budget reporting requirements

  • Builds a model that combines grant-supported and fee-based programming to expand reach of hands-on GreenKids lessons in schools throughout the region

  • Regularly evaluates and uses feedback from evaluation tools to develop and update GreenKids program offerings to keep them relevant, innovative, and aligned with current curriculum standards

  • Fosters partnerships with organizations serving complimentary education roles in the community

  • Manages development of all GreenKids program outreach and marketing materials in consultation with the Director of Marketing and Communications

  • Communicates GreenKids program successes to partners, funders, and the public using social media

  • Manages and maintains inventory of GreenKids program supplies 

  • Represents ANS at conferences and meetings and serves on committees of environmental education leadership organizations including Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education and the North American Association for Environment Education and others as needed to promote ANS strategic goals

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Dynamic leader with an entrepreneurial spirit

  • At least five years of experience in Environmental Education, including skills in teaching, and training other teachers.

  • Master’s degree or higher in education, ecology, conservation biology, or a related field (degree or equivalent experience preferred)

  • Experience with developing curriculum and ability to create innovative strategies and unique programs 

  • Ability to establish, manage, and complete multiple projects on time and on budget

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively build strong relationships and collaborations

  • Grant-writing and grant management experience

  • Excellent verbal and written (including electronic) communication skills 

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player

  • Management experience in hiring, training, and supervising education staff

  • Non-profit and environmental organization experience preferred


Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift bins of lesson materials up to 40 lbs.

  • Ability to navigate stairs while carrying lesson materials

  • Ability to drive, and access to a car that can transport large bins of lesson materials

  • Ability to speak, hear, and use a personal computer for standard business communications
