Description
A postgraduate research project training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water. The appointment will be served with Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW)/Drinking Water Protection Division (DWPD) in Washington, DC.
The DWPD Infrastructure Branch provides information management and website/outreach support for the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water, administers the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, and manages and provides support to multiple data systems and tools in support of the Public Water System Supervision and Underground injection Control (UIC) Programs. The branch’s Information Systems Team personnel participate in, provide IT leadership for, and support the National UIC Database in a team led by the DWPD Prevention Branch. The UIC Program is responsible for protecting underground sources of drinking water in a wide variety of activities ranging from oil and gas development to geologic sequestration to storm water management.
In this project, the intern will be part of an exciting team that uses Reporting Services and Database tools to analyze and support management of the UIC Program. The intern will be trained on system and data analyses related to the following UIC Team activities:
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.

- Developing user friendly data access reports in the Oracle Apex based UIC data access suite of tools
- Using communication and technical support to encourage State participation in the UIC database.
- Submitting state data to the UIC database on an ongoing basis
- Communicating with States and EPA Offices on their data needs and application of the UIC database in their program activities
- Creating and implementing strategies to most effectively use data in successful implementation of the UIC program
- Coordinating with external organizations to better integrate data systems
- Create user friendly data reports using Oracle Apex and other tools
- Analyze data submitted by States and EPA Regions to evaluate data quality and UIC Program implementation
- Make recommendations to team members, EPA managers, and State/EPA Regional staff on follow up actions based on analyses
- Communicate with State and EPA Regional partners to clarify questions and support data submission and uses
- Use UIC data for program management, program oversight, meeting data requests, and other uses

Qualifications
Applicants must have received a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biological and physical sciences, engineering or information sciences within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
This appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend bsed on level of education. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant's travel expenses to present the results of their research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become EPA employees.
The mentor for this project is Towanna Dorsey (Dorsey.Towana@epa.gov). The desired start date is October 3, 2016.
