Extension Program Assistant- UMD Extension

Position Summary:
This position is located at the University of Maryland Extension office in Frederick, Maryland.
Working under supervision and with the 4-H Educator, this position will provide leadership and
oversight focused on the 4-H community based programs including 4-H camp, County Fair,
community centers and FCPS (in school and after school).

Responsibilities:
• Assist with preparation and instructing seasonal classes including but not limited to:
embryology, STEM, Frederick County Fair.
• Assist with camping and environmental education program, trainings, and preparations.
Oversee counselor and adult staff move-in which includes, but is not limited to: assigning
sleeping arrangements; coordinating dinner for counselors and adult staff; preparing
materials for each class. Ensure all camp policies and procedures.
• Cooperate with staff in enforcing safe camping procedures and guidelines referred to in the
ACA handbook.
• Assist with data entry correlating to the 4-H animal science program for quality assurance
and fair eligibility. Become familiar with events and 4-H rules and procedures, including
4-H, emergency procedures, ad 4-H Behavioral Expectations/Disciplinary Policy and
Procedures and Volunteer Expectations.
• Cooperate with UME faculty, staff, and volunteers enforcing 4-H and event rules and
procedures.
• Promote UME and 4-H at community and FCPS events.
Qualifications:
Required–
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Five years experience performing a variety of duties in support of the teaching,
demonstration, and advising work of Extension agents or in community outreach, health care,
research, or social services programs.
• Must be proficient in the use of technology including Microsoft Office products, internet,
email and office equipment such as copier, printers, poster laminator, LCD projector.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to interact effectively with internal and external parties in a courteous and efficient
manner.
• Familiarity with the 4-H program, projects and basic youth development practices.
• This position is subject to a Criminal History Record Check. Employment contingent upon
successful completion and clearance of the Criminal History Record Check.

Preferred–
• Prefer at least one (1) year college in pursuit of a degree in education, social work or
Extension.
• Two (2) years experience providing educational programs including children, young adults
and adults.
Physical Demands of the Position:
• The employee will lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and tear-down of
displays, tables, and chairs.
• This position requires the employee to work outdoors at certain times of the year, especially
during the time of annual fair, 4-H residential or day camps and youth recreation activities.
• This position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to
individuals of various ages, socio-economic, and educational backgrounds.
• Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will commensurate with experience, with base salary of $34,075.00
per year. The position is a 12-month full-time contract that may be renewed annually, based on
performance and funding.
