Two postdoctoral research positions (up to 3 years) in aquatic resources restoration

Two Postdoctoral Research positions (up to 3 years) in aquatic resources restoration and Earth and environmental science at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA

Two Postdoctoral Research positions are available, each for up to a three-year term (pending performance) starting January 1, 2024, in the Department of Earth and Environment at Franklin and Marshall College, a liberal arts undergraduate institution in Lancaster PA. We seek two highly motivated postdoctoral scholars in one or more of these disciplines: geomorphology, surface water hydrology, freshwater ecosystem restoration/ecohydrology, carbon and other nutrient cycling, and geochemistry or biogeochemistry. Each postdoctoral scholar will teach two undergraduate course credits per year that support and expand our curricular offerings in these areas and will mentor undergraduate research assistants. Courses can be one class with a lab or two classes with no lab, including seminars in the candidates’ areas of research expertise. Teaching experience is preferred but not required.

The fully-funded research will focus on one of the largest urban floodplain-wetland restoration projects to date in the mid-Atlantic region of the eastern US, the Little Conestoga Creek Blue-Green Corridor project, with one postdoctoral position focusing on water quality and the other on floodplain/wetland biogeochemistry. The postdoctoral researchers will establish and maintain multiple types of monitoring along 2.7 km of the Little Conestoga Creek stream corridor adjacent to the F&M campus. The research will include fieldwork to install and maintain instrumentation to monitor water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, specific conductance, nitrate-N, and other parameters.

Funding is available immediately for a comprehensive monitoring program with new instrumentation including three fully equipped EXO2 water quality sondes, a Sontek Flowtracker 2 with integrated GPS, greenhouse gas flux monitors, and a stable isotope CRD spectrometer. Our department is well-equipped with ICP-OES, XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS, two gamma spectrometers, two liquid scintillation counters, and an elemental combustion analyzer. The project will involve fieldwork to map the stream corridor using UAV photogrammetry (including a new thermal UAV with RTK GPS) and on-the-ground RTK-GPS surveying with Emlid GPS units.

Applicants should apply here to submit a CV, cover letter, and description of research and teaching interests that include how the applicant approaches inclusive excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Reach out to the following F&M faculty if you have questions:

Dorothy Merritts -  dorothy.merritts@fandm.edu

Christopher Williams - chris.williams@fandm.edu

Robert Walter - robert.walter@fandm.edu

Bob Walter will be at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh October 15-18 and can meet candidates in person. Dorothy Merritts and Bob Walter will be available to meet candidates at the AGU meeting in San Francisco in December.

MS Graduate Student Opportunity - NC State University

 MS Graduate Student

Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering

NC State University

Contact:  Dr. Mike Burchell (mike_burchell@ ncsu.edu)

Start Date: January 15, 2024

Project description:

This project will evaluate technologies that combine physical and biological processes to enhance nitrogen and phosphorus removal at smaller rural wastewater treatment facilities - a crucial strategy to improve surface water quality in NC. Advances in duckweed breeding and genetics and in the use of biochar have increased their potential to strip nutrients from wastewater. This study will combine laboratory experiments and scaled-up tests at a rural wastewater facility to enhance and build upon previous on-site research by members of the project team.  We hypothesize harvestable duckweed and biochar filters will significantly reduce ammonium-nitrogen and phosphate in secondary wastewater effluent.  Further, treatment efficiency will be enhanced as a treatment train and if wetland plants and pulsed aeration are added to the biochar filter.  Nutrients captured by duckweed and biochar adsorption could potentially be recovered and reused as soil amendments.  These alternatives could significantly improve watershed health, with minimal economic effect on underserved rural communities.  This research project will be further enhanced through undergraduate and graduate student training, as well as the development of outreach materials and workshops for rural wastewater operators that will complement the goals of existing state wastewater infrastructure programs.

Field Scientist/Engineer - Experiential Learning & Field Research - South Carolina

Field Scientist/Engineer – Experiential Learning & Field Research

University of South Carolina Baruch Marine Field Laboratory

Start Date:           January 2024

Compensation:   $40K; full benefits; yearly renewal

Location:              Georgetown, South Carolina (transition housing available!)

Search Status:    Screening begins November 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

Description:        We are recruiting a field scientist or engineer for educational programming and research project support at Baruch Marine Field Laboratory. The focus of the position entails coordinating the immersive Semester@TheCoast program we host at Baruch Marine Field Lab each Spring semester. This multidisciplinary program weaves elements of coastal zone ecology with our unique South Carolina Lowcountry history and culture, much focused on experiential learning opportunities on the 16,000 acres of Hobcaw Barony and regional nature preserves.

The field scientist will serve as program coordinator for the Semester@TheCoast, focusing on coordinating courses and their associated field research activities with all other program elements (e.g., guest speakers, regional tourism, themed dinners, and other extra-curricular activities). Secondarily, there will be an expectation to contribute to existing research projects at Baruch Marine Field Lab while mentoring undergraduate students. One opportunity is a newly initiated Marine Debris Challenge grant project, focused on advancing the science and engineering of non-plastic, nature-based alternatives for coastal environmental restoration (e.g., jute reef prisms), water quality protection (e.g., fully organic erosion control geotextiles), and aquaculture (e.g., biodegradable clam netting). The balance of activities will be tailored to the skill- and experience-set of the successful applicant to maximize individual professional development.

Qualifications:    Applicants will have secured a MS in a related discipline (e.g., Environmental Science, Marine Science, Ecology, Ecological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biology, etc.). Preferred qualifications include familiarity with coastal ecosystems, program management experience, teaching/mentoring experience with undergraduates, and a demonstrated ability to work independently.

To Apply:             Send application packets to William Strosnider (bill@baruch.sc.edu) with the subject “SATC Field Scientist/Engineer”.  Packets should be a single PDF with a 1) 1-page cover letter describing your interest in the project with respect to your career goals and experience, 2) resume, and 3) list of three references.
