Did you see the story about North Cascades National Park in The Seattle Times? Outdoors reporter Gregory Scruggs wrote a great article about the past and present of our beloved national park. He observed that "visiting a national park in Washington while enjoying a modicum of solitude has become a logistical feat. This summer, Mount Rainier National Park requires timed-entry reservations ... while visitors to Olympic National Park highlights often endure multi-hour waits. But hiding in plain sight is a third option, if ‘national park’ is on your summer bingo card: North Cascades." In his list of 8 North Cascades National Park Adventures, Scruggs also said:

"The North Cascades Institute maintains a world-class environmental learning center on the shores of glacial blue Lake Diablo. It offers spartan but clean and comfortable overnight accommodations in lodge rooms with bunk beds, three healthy cafeteria-style meals included."

And here's some great news for those of you who don’t have campground reservations in the park: we've added more capacity for our popular Base Camp Learning & Lodging program in late July and early August. In addition to lodging and meals, Base Campers enjoy outdoor learning adventures with our naturalists, as well as access to Diablo Lake and many local trails.

Scruggs also called out Skagit Tours on his list, and we always recommend one of the best combos for exploring our neighborhood—whether you’re a local or want to WOW an out of town visitor, book a couple nights with Base Camp and add on a Skagit Tour.

YLA JOINS LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL'S ANNUAL CAMPOUT

Our Youth Leadership Adventures team recently joined Whatcom Intergenerational High School on their annual Forest Camp for 2 nights at the River Farm in Deming. The goal was for students to gain experience in tent camping, connect with their environment, and to have fun! Our YLA team lent gear to outfit the students, taught them about orienteering with maps and compasses, and demonstrated shelter building with tarps. Despite some intense rainfall, everyone was excited to be there and by the last night, skies cleared enough for students to find the North Star we had been talking about!

The Invasive Vines Program Manager will develop and manage a volunteer program to rescue trees from invasive vines in traditionally marginalized communities in Washington, D.C., and Prince George’s County, MD. The Program Manager will implement CCAN's vine eradication system in eligible communities to preserve the tree canopy and mitigate the harmful impacts of the climate crisis. The ideal candidate is excited to work with community partners in a hands-on, outdoor role.

What You Will Do

The primary responsibilities of the position include:

• Develop a strategic plan for vine removal in historically under-resourced communities. Create surveys of invasive vine encroachment in Washington, D.C., and Prince George’s County to identify eligible communities, build a timeline, and create a plan to engage volunteers.
• Recruit, educate, and manage new and existing CCAN supporters to attend local vine removal events. Develop relationships with community organizations to provide education on invasive vines and removal techniques.
• Manage vine removal events. Ensure events are effective, safe, and well-run. Track progress and help volunteers develop their skills.

Qualifications

• Commitment to the mission of fighting climate change and promoting environmental justice.
• Enthusiasm for hands-on, outdoor work with the community.
• Experience living or working in BIPOC communities.
• At least three years experience (professional, volunteer, or community) related to removing invasive plants.
• At least one year of community organizing or volunteer management experience.
• Proven ability to work independently.
• Experience managing multiple projects and timelines.
• Willing to work evenings and weekends and travel within the region as needed.

The Details

This hybrid position will work two days per week from our office in Takoma Park and work in the field or from home the rest of the week. This position is full-time, salaried, and exempt from overtime. The Invasive Vines Program Manager reports to the Executive Director.

Salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $69,000 to $79,000. Salaries at CCAN are based on years of related experience and demonstrated skills. We provide a generous benefits package, including health care, dental and vision coverage, and four weeks of paid vacation.

Cornell Postdoc - Mobile Acoustics

Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position – Mobile Acoustics/Bat Monitoring

The Fuller Spatial Ecology and Decision Science Lab at the New York Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Cornell University is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral research associate position for a bat population monitoring project using mobile acoustic survey data. The project is in support of the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat), collaborating with partners from the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project builds on a strong foundation of mobile acoustic work conducted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and other state agency partners, and will involve collection and analysis of mobile acoustic survey data from monitoring partners in the northeastern United States. The candidate will help meet partner needs by producing bat species status and trend reports, data visualizations, and data dashboards that readily communicate analytical results to a broad audience.

The candidate will work with state, federal, and non-governmental organizations in the northeast (NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, CT, RI, PA and NJ, DE, D, VA, WV) to promote engagement in the North American Bat Monitoring Program and cultivate collaboration on a regional analysis of mobile acoustic data. The candidate will participants in the Northeast Bat Working Group, NABat Community of Practice, NABat Mobile Transect Technical Working Group, and the NABat Analytical Working Group. The candidate will be expected to develop manuscripts for submission in peer-reviewed journals and communicate research to project PIs and partners.

The postdoctoral scientist will be housed in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, Cornell University (Ithaca, New York), working with Dr. Angela Fuller, U.S. Geological Survey, NY Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. The postdoc will work closely with the NABat program, USGS Fort Collins Science Center (Dr. Brian Reichert and Bethany Straw), the National white-nose syndrome coordinators with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Drs. Jeremy Coleman and Jonathan Reichard), Carl Herzog (NYSDEC, retired), and NABat contributing data partners. There will be opportunities to mentor and collaborate with graduate students.

Ph.D. in ecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology, natural resources, statistics, or a related quantitative field. Strong mathematical and programming skills, experience in statistical estimation and simulation modeling and use of R. Demonstrated desire and proven ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Excellent writing and personal communication skills, including with external partners. Proven record of leadership with the ability to work independently and under limited supervision as well as collaboratively. Driver’s license.

Preferred: Competitive candidates will also have one or more of the following qualifications: Experience with analysis of acoustic monitoring data, previous experience with bat population ecology, experience in partnerships/working with stakeholder groups, population modeling, spatial analysis, machine learning, N-mixture models, Bayesian hierarchical models, big data skills, R Shiny App, supervisory experience.

SALARY: $56,484 to $56,813/yr plus benefits. One-year initial appointment with the possibility of yearly extensions not to exceed 5 years.

ENST Project Development Center hiring student workers

Dear Undergrads:

The Department of Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) runs a Project Development Center (PDC) which is hiring multiple student workers this summer and fall (possibly longer). Students should be familiar working with hand tools, power tools, operating on metal and wood, can work 15-20 hours during the semester (possibly longer during breaks), for $15/hour. Students should be able to lift 50 pounds. Students will occasionally be delivering packages and helping assemble materials across campus and therefore need to have a clean driving record and valid driver's license (because a work vehicle will be provided). Working hours can slightly vary Monday-Friday 7am-5pm as the schedule fits their course work. Preference given to students who completed INAG250 or with much of the experiences listed above. NASA DEVELOP Program Fall 2024 Opportunities

 I am writing to inform you about 10-week paid research opportunities with the NASA DEVELOP National Program, open to current students and recent college graduates as well as transitioning/early career professionals. Please pass this information, along with the attached flyer, to those who may be interested.

 

NASA DEVELOP projects focus on helping local, national, and international communities address their environmental concerns while utilizing NASA's Earth observing fleet of satellites. For the fall 2024 term, NASA DEVELOP will operate at six locations across the country at NASA Centers and other regional locations. This is a great opportunity for participants who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Participants will work with NASA scientists, partner organizations, and science advisors to learn about the use of NASA Earth science data for use in water resources, disaster management, ecological conservation, and other applications to address environmental community concerns.

 

Responsibilities will include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and producing deliverables, such as a technical report, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial, is not required for acceptance. This is a multi-disciplinary opportunity for all those interested in Earth science and we encourage those in the social sciences, general science, engineering, computer science, etc. to apply.

 

Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20 – 29 hours per week during the term. The position is paid on an hourly basis that is determined by education level and working location.

The Current Student Scholarship application for all AGNR students is now open! This application is for awards for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Students must be planning to enroll in one or both of those semesters with their primary major in the College of AGNR to be eligible to apply. Students graduating in May 2024 or Summer 2024 are not eligible for awards. 

All students meeting the basic eligibility above are encouraged to apply. 

Most college scholarships are offered as 1 year awards, so even current scholarship recipients should apply. If you have a question about a scholarship you currently receive, refer to your offer letter or contact me directly. 

For students in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, you will also be able to use this application to apply to Department-level scholarship awards. 

The application is due by 11:59 am by May 15th. All decisions will be released by July 1st.
