Recruiting graduate students - Conservation Science and Urban Ecology Lab, UMass Boston School for the Environment

 Dear colleagues,

Hope you are well. As of September 1st, I started a new position as Assistant Professor at the School for the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston), where I am building the Conservation Science and Urban Ecology Lab. I am currently recruiting new graduate students (MS and PhD) to join my research group starting Fall 2026. Prospective students should have an interest in the ecological, social, and/or biocultural dimensions of conservation in human-dominated environments.

Examples of broad areas for project development include:
  • Wildlife/fish harvest and trade in global cities (e.g. New York City, Boston)
  • Impacts of coastal development/urbanization on biological and cultural diversity (e.g. Costa Rica)
  • Human-wildlife interactions and conservation in the urbanizing Amazon (Iquitos, Peru)

If you know of a prospective graduate student who may be interested in these or similar topics, please feel free to share this information/direct them my way. More information can be found on my lab website: cjriveralab.com

Job Opportunities with Fund for the Public Interest (UMD Career Fair!)

Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that runs campaigns with some of the nation’s most prominent environmental and social change organizations, such as Environment America and PIRG (Public Interest Research Group).

They will be at the UMD Fall Career & Internship Fair on September 30th.

Fund for the Public Interest is a national nonprofit that launched in 1982 to help find ways to engage people on the most pressing environmental and social change problems of our day such as removing microplastics from our environment, protecting our most beautiful outdoor places, and holding polluters accountable for their waste. Our staff help make thousands, even millions of voices heard, by talking to people one-on-one and collecting petition signatures, emails, and small donations, and delivering that grassroots support to legislators.

Below is a post about the job positions they have available:

🦇Applications Are Open: MTBC Scholarship

Antoniya Hubancheva Award Applications are Open
September 30 – November 1, 2025

We are delighted to announce that applications for the Antoniya Hubancheva Award open TODAY. Applications will be accepted until November 1, 2025.

This award provides critical support for bat researchers, conservationists, and students worldwide—especially those from developing countries—who are working on projects of exceptional value to bat conservation.

The Antoniya Hubancheva Award was established in honor of our first scholarship recipient, "Toni" Hubancheva, whose career trajectory continues to inspire. With early MTBC support, Toni went on to earn a Ph.D. in bat research, make groundbreaking discoveries, and share her work with international media.

In 2025, MTBC awarded $5,000 to Juan Pellón of Peru for his year-round monitoring of the rare Peruvian long-snouted bat, a critical pollinator facing growing threats. Three additional scholars from Mozambique, Costa Rica, and the United States were each awarded $2,500 to advance their outstanding projects.

We look forward to receiving applications from the next generation of bat conservation leaders and supporting innovative research that helps secure a brighter future for bats.

    • Application Period: September 30 – November 1, 2025
