Boren Fellowships for Graduate Students - Study Abroad for Critical Languages


The Boren Fellowship is aimed at graduate students (US citizens) who want to study abroad for six months to a year in 2018-19 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, the Middle East, and in some cases, Latin America. (Boren Fellowships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.)

*New this year* Indonesian Flagship Languages Initiative (IFLI), to study Bahasa Indonesia. Details will be released soon.

Boren will continue to offer the South Asian Flagship Initiative (SAFLI) for the study of Hindi or Urdu and the African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) for the study of French, Portuguese, Swahili, Akan/Twi, Wolof, or Zulu. 
The Boren Fellowship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year federal service expectation.

Information Sessions:  The National Scholarships Office has scheduled a round of information sessions to help you learn more about the Boren Fellowship and its application process. Please RSVP at nsepboren@umd.edu. If you are not able to attend one of these sessions please email us and we can arrange a time to meet individually.
