Longwood Gardens - Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician working in the Research and Conservation Division of the Horticulture Department, helping to maintain Longwood’s natural resources in an ecologically sound manner.

Responsibilities include a full range of land management duties in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, including the planting of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; maintenance of formal native planting beds; weeding and managing invasive species using hand, equipment and herbicide techniques; trail maintenance; ecological monitoring and management; and ecosystem restoration.  This individual will also train and mentor students and volunteers on best management practices required to maintain Longwood’s natural resources and ecosystems. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work is required.

Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of natural land stewardship and a degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and/or Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or related discipline. Three years of land stewardship experience is preferred and candidates with master’s degrees are encouraged to apply.  Preferred candidates will have ecological gardening experience and be well versed in plant and wildlife identification.  Strong organizational and computer skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people and to complete work in a timely manner are required.  Must have a valid driver’s license, basic equipment operation skills and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license.
