Full-time Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician Longwood Gardens seeks a full-time Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician to join our Research and Conservation Division. The technician is an integral member of a team responsible for ecological management of 700+ acres of diverse habitats in a Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape. Longwood’s Land Stewardship and Ecology program advances land stewardship and ecological science in a botanical garden setting with unique opportunities for public engagement. All members of the team perform daily stewardship activities in a variety of terrain and weather conditions including planting native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; weeding and maintenance of native planting beds; managing invasive species using manual, mechanical, and herbicide techniques; and trail maintenance. Other responsibilities include developing projects and coordinating with the rest of the team to complete them; taking a leading role in scientific data collection, management, and reporting; communicating with the public; and training and mentoring volunteers and students in land stewardship techniques. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work is required. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of natural land stewardship and a degree and/or significant work experience in Ecology, Horticulture, Wildlife and/or Natural Resource Management, Biology, or a related discipline. Three years of land stewardship experience is preferred. Ideal candidates will have ecological science experience, basic equipment operation skills, and be well versed in plant and/or wildlife identification. Self-motivation, a high degree of organization and attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of people are essential. Part-time Assistant Land Stewardship and Ecology Technician Longwood Gardens seeks a part-time Assistant Ecology Technician to join the Land Stewardship program of our Research and Conservation Division. The part-time technician is an integral member of a team responsible for ecological management of 700+ acres of diverse habitats in a Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape. Longwood’s Land Stewardship and Ecology program advances land stewardship practice and ecological science in a botanical garden setting with unique opportunities for public engagement. All members of the team perform essential daily stewardship activities in a variety of terrain and weather conditions. Duties include planting native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants; weeding and maintenance of native plantings; managing invasive species using manual, mechanical, and herbicide techniques; and trail maintenance. The Assistant Ecology Technician also participates in scientific data collection, assists with wildlife management, and trains and mentors volunteers and students in land stewardship techniques. Occasional weekend, evening and holiday work is required. The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license, be able to lift 50 lbs., and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator license. Land Stewardship and Ecology Intern The Land Stewardship and Ecology Intern is immersed in both the practice of land stewardship and the science of ecology, learning from varied experiences that range from restoration of native plant communities and scientific data collection to GIS mapping and wildlife management. The intern supports Longwood’s Land Stewardship and Ecology team in the management of 700+ diverse acres of forests, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, and agricultural lands in a southeastern Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape, including the 86-acre Meadow Garden. All members of the team perform daily stewardship activities such as planting, meadow mowing, trail maintenance, and invasive species management. The intern also helps to advance scientific research in ecology and test innovative land stewardship practices. Responsibilities may include collecting and analyzing field, archival, and greenhouse data; reviewing and reporting on current scientific literature and historical information; creating and revising plans and GIS maps; engaging with volunteers; and participating in educational programs related to land stewardship. Self-motivation, a high degree of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and with a team are essential. The ability to lift 50 lbs., willingness to work in adverse weather conditions, and a valid driver's license are required. The intern must have or obtain a PA pesticide applicator’s license and will likely apply chemical herbicides, with an emphasis on personal safety and minimum impact. Applicants must have or be actively working toward a bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, wildlife biology, environmental science, or a related discipline, along with a passion for land stewardship and conservation.
