Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science. Our program runs for 12-weeks from May 19 to August 10, 2024.

Each REU fellow will receive:

  • $7,200 stipend
  • Free housing at your research lab
  • Round-trip travel expenses

In particular, we encourage students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. We believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.

We are accepting applications for the 2024 class now through February 13. We anticipate an in-person program for the summer of 2024. Please visit our website to find out more (www.mdsg.umd.edu/reu) or drop me a note at reu@mdsg.umd.edu.

Entomology Seminar of potential interest

Speaker: Fiona L. Goggin, Ph.D., Dept. Of Entomology and Plant Pathology, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville AR

Follow the link for more of Dr. Goggin's work.

Title: "Understanding Plant Defenses Against Vascular Herbivores”

Abstract: Aphids and phytoparasitic nematodes are both specialized to attack the vascular system of plants, and include many of the world’s most damaging crop pests. Dr. Goggin’s research explores plant interactions with these vascular herbivores, and the interplay between herbivore resistance and primary metabolism in plants. Recent areas of focus include the potential utility of plant-derived peptides and rhizobacteria for biological control of nematodes, and the influence of fatty acid metabolism, reactive oxygen species, and chloroplast signaling on host plant defenses against aphids. 2024 WASHINGTON BIOLOGISTS’ FIELD CLUB RESEARCH AWARDS COMPETITION

The Washington Biologists Field Club has small awards.

The Washington Biologists’ Field Club (WBFC), organized in 1900, annually provides competitive grant to support field research on the natural history of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States. The WBF welcomes proposals that consider aspects of natural history, systematics, biodiversity, ecology, or environmental issues.

A list of sponsors is available at the club’s web site (https://wbfc.science/ ; click on the “Research” link).

Applications are due January 19. Faculty have to serve as PI, and proposals need to be routed through ORA, but proposals can indicate that the work supports student research, which is favored.

Applications need a letter of support from a Club member. ENST has two members (Shannon Browne and Paul Leisnham).

REU Program at UVA's Blandy Experimental Farm

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program at the University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm! An excellent opportunity to conduct mentored ecological research during the summer of 2024.

The program emphasizes experimental, field-based approaches to a wide variety of topics such as plant-animal interactions, pollination ecology, landscape ecology, and ecosystem ecology. Successful applicants will receive a stipend, additional funds for basic living expenses, and free housing at the Blandy Experimental Farm field station. Each student is matched with a research mentor from our pool of faculty members and graduate students and then conducts an independent research project. The students will gain experience in experimental design, data collection, analytical techniques, and written and oral presentation of findings. REU students also benefit from several professional development workshops and research community activities throughout the program.

This is a truly wonderful opportunity for an undergraduate student contemplating a future in science. For more information: https://blandy.virginia.edu/content/reu-program-ecology-and-evolution

PhD or MS Assistantship on Watershed Scale Biogeochemistry at Iowa State University

The Ecology & Biogeochemistry of Watersheds Lab Iowa State University seeks two graduate students to conduct research on the watershed scale impacts of wetland restoration as part of NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program funded project. The project will characterize co-benefits of wetlands for water quality and climate mitigation in intensively managed agricultural lands at the site and watershed scales. We anticipate two students joining our team who will work collaboratively on field-based analysis and modeling. This project will be conducted in partnership with Ducks Unlimited and local NGOs so students will have opportunities to engage with stakeholders and conduct integrative research.

Qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in ecological or agricultural engineering, environmental science, natural resources, or related field, and strong interest in pursuing research related to hydrology and nutrient biogeochemistry. Students should have strong quantitative and writing skills, interest in field work in a range of weather conditions, and the patience and attention to detail for careful laboratory analyses. Graduate students can earn their degree in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering or the interdisciplinary Environmental Science Program at Iowa State University.

Application: Submit a cover letter addressing their qualifications and interest in the project, along with a resume or CV, and unofficial transcript to Dr. Sara Winnike McMillan at swmcmill@iastate.edu. Assistantship selection is dependent upon acceptance to the ISU graduate school.
