Vegetation – Biological Soil Crust Technicians

Technicians will receive unique training on the identification and ecology of biological soil crusts in the Great Basin. Technicians will also assist in data collection and management related to sagebrush ecosystems, with a special focus on habitat for sage-grouse, management and restoration of vascular plants and biological soil crusts. Projects are funded primarily by state and federal partners (e.g., Nevada Dept. of Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service). Tasks will include, but are not limited to, collecting data in both local and remote locations, preparing materials for restoration efforts and studies, and collecting data on vegetation and biological soil crusts in the field.

Field Locations: Field locations are across the Great Basin and Eastern California. Primitive field housing will be provided to technicians in some locations, and successful applicants will be required to stay on site during work periods over the field season. During field work, 8-day camping hitches in remote locations will typically be required. Some work will likely be conducted within the vicinity of Reno.

The sagebrush ecosystems of the Great Basin and Eastern California are unique and support a diversity of flora and fauna. With this opportunity, you will get the chance to work closely with endemic species, explore large expanses of public land and participate in recreational activities including backcountry camping, hiking, climbing, hot springs, mountain biking, and many more!

Desired expertise/skills

Minimum Qualifications
- all applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver's license
- previous experience collecting biological data in remote, difficult working environments
- driving four-wheel drive vehicles on dirt roads
- working under challenging weather conditions as are common in the Great Basin, specifically hot-dry conditions, and cold-windy conditions
- attention to detail, critical thinking on the fly, and ability to make deadlines

Desired qualifications include experience with vegetation in the region, especially plant identification.

Description of Working Conditions
Work will take place in office, lab, outdoor lab, and field settings. Field work can involve exposure to extreme temperature and weather conditions, including long hours standing, bending, walking, and performing tasks that require physical exertion. Incumbents may be required to lift containers weighing up to 35 pounds in the performance of the assignment. Incumbents will be expected to work 40 hours/week, although intermittent work can be negotiated. Work during the field season will regularly require 80 hours per two-week pay period.

Seasonal Position - George Myers Naturalist - Cape May, NJ

Job Classification: Seasonal Full Time (March 16 through December 15, 2024)

The GEORGE MYERS NATURALIST develops a full spectrum of skills through hands-on participation in various educational, research, and conservation projects at New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) and Nature Center of Cape May (NCCM) in Cape May, NJ. Cape May is renowned as one of the world's greatest hotspots for animal migration as well as being a popular summertime vacation destination and beach resort. The combination of the two offers great opportunities for wildlife research and education through public outreach. New Jersey Audubon fosters the application of sound scientific principles and practices to address conservation issues related to vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and the natural habitats with which they are associated.

Note: This position is named in honor of the late George Myers, a talented CMBO Associate Naturalist who passed on much too soon. In the spirit of George, the position aims to bring the successful candidate through a full lifecycle of being a field naturalist: from learning how New Jersey Audubon translates research into outreach material and ultimately into conservation, to how we develop and execute programs for youth through adulthood. The successful applicant will work with CMBO during the spring and fall migration periods and for the NCCM during the summer months, during which time they will go from an active learner to a skilled leader with a clear understanding of the needs of New Jersey's resident and migratory wildlife, the ways in which we are working to protect them, and the ability to engage a diverse public audience to become stewards of the important resources

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Educational Programming
- Conduct short programs, field trips, and workshops on bird identification and migration phenomena.
- Assist visitors with bird identification.
- Assist migration research counters as needed.
- Orient and assist visitors to the Cape May migration count sites. 800+ people may visit per day during peak times.
- Conduct children's programming at the Nature Center of Cape May's summer nature camp.
- Conduct interpretive outreach programs (emphasis on local aquatic marine animals) at various locations throughout Cape May County.
- Assist in all daily operations of running the Nature Center during the busy summer season. This may include program registration, retail operations, cleaning, gardening, animal care, aquarium and equipment maintenance, etc.
- Organize and maintain lesson plans, educational supplies, equipment, teaching materials, files and records, and all other programming information.
- Assist with the design and maintenance of interpretive exhibits, displays, and other center-based informational materials.

Membership
- Strive to increase NJ Audubon/Cape May Bird Observatory membership base.

Community Relations
- Represent NJ Audubon in the local community, expanding the organization's presence to increase local awareness, support and participation.
- Develop material for NJA website, blog, and volunteer/member newsletter.
- Assist with the development and management of the Bird Observatory's and Nature Center's social media pages.
- Develop brochures, checklists, and displays as instructed by the Program Director.

Other
- Obtain satisfactory background check.
- Attend center, department and NJ Audubon meetings and serve on committees as requested by supervisor.
- Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR and other public safety certification as appropriate
- Participates with other NJ Audubon staff to adopt a "team" approach towards daily operations at the assigned center.
- Assume additional responsibilities as required.

Qualifications/ Knowledge/ Skills
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology, environmental science, or similar field preferred.
- Familiarity with bird migration, birding, marine species, and coastal ecology is a plus, but learning on the job is expected and we will provide training and support.
- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office 365, social media) to fulfill the job requirements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Punctual with excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback.
- Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of their responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
- Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the department and organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Must have own transportation, a valid driver's license, and the ability to operate a motor vehicle in NJ.
- Must have the physical capacity to walk over uneven terrain for long distances, able to move materials, and to lift 25 lbs.
- Willingness to work irregular hours under sometimes difficult field conditions.

Field technicians - Interior Alaska Forest Ecology, Forest Futures Lab

 We seek two full time field technicians for July 1, 2024-July 26, 2024 to assist with a forest ecology field campaign and experiment in interior Alaska. Specifically, the field technicians will be responsible for rigorous data collection and recording from vegetation, soil organic material, and soil surveys in recently burned (1-2 years) forests.

The chosen candidate will gain valuable skills in conducting ecological field research in a remote setting and will be exposed to cutting edge approaches in population and community ecology, biogeochemistry, and microbial science. This is an hourly paid position. Housing and meals are provided. The field technicians will join a vibrant and growing team at the Forest Futures Lab based at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Salary: $20 per hour

Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree granting institution or have already received an associates or bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, forest science, or a related field. Successful candidates will be detail oriented and have past ecological field work experience, wilderness experience or an eager and enthusiastic willingness to learn new skills quickly. Candidates must have a valid state driver’s license, be able to hike 5 miles in cold, wet conditions, and carry 50 lbs. Candidates must have the ability to take clear notes.

Field technician responsibilities: The responsibilities of the field technicians include participating in field operations and following data entry protocols to a high scientific standard. Field operations will include a suite of varying activities such as conducting vegetation surveys, measuring soil horizon layers, and taking soil cores. Field technicians will also be responsible for carrying field equipment to in situ field sites, often on complex terrain, digging soil pits for sampling, and following safety protocols. Field technicians may camp for up to four nights at a time. All employees will be responsible for conducting themselves in a manner that leads to a safe, friendly, and harassment-free work environment for all and in compliance with Cary Institute policies.

NOAA Ocean Exploration is excited to announce that the application for the 2024 Explorer-in-Training Program is now open!  This year, the Explorer-in-Training Program will feature two paid internship options: (a) 2 to 4-week expedition-based opportunities supporting ocean mapping operations on the Okeanos Explorer and (b) 10-week spring and summertime opportunities. The 10-week internships give participants an experiential learning opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through long-term projects supported by NOAA Ocean Exploration mentors. The expedition-based internships provide support for specific NOAA Ocean Exploration expeditions, giving participants the chance to contribute to mission efforts while gaining tangible skills that benefit their future pursuits. Applicants may only apply for one internship option.
