Research Assistant Position
Arctic Carbon Monitoring - Job SNRA20
POSITION SUMMARY: We seek a Research Assistant (RA) to work on a field and lab-based project focused on carbon cycling in arctic tundra. The RA will work with a team of researchers at the Woods Hole Research Center studying the drivers and magnitudes of carbon exchange across a wetland tundra ecosystem. The position requires extensive field-based research in the Yukon Kuskokwim (YK) Delta, Alaska, lab and data analyses, and may also include opportunities to contribute to synthesis activities focused on carbon cycling in arctic and boreal regions.
Responsibilities:
Work closely with research team to implement field campaigns to examine the drivers and magnitude of terrestrial and aquatic carbon fluxes in the YK Delta.
Conduct research in a remote field site in Alaska.
Conduct field measurements that include plant community composition, terrestrial ecosystem carbon and nutrient pools, aquatic chemistry, and CO2 and CH4 fluxes from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems using chamber-based and eddy covariance methods.
Conduct lab-based research activities, including analyses of plants, soils and water.
Quality check and archive field and lab data.
Contribute to synthesis, presentation, and publication of results.
Qualifications and Experience:
Master's degree in Earth System Science, Ecology, or a related discipline. Applicants with a related Bachelor's degree and at least three years of relevant experience will also be considered.
Experience conducting field-based research. Experience planning and coordinating field-based research campaigns in remote regions is strongly desired. Experience with aquatic chemistry and with eddy covariance or chamber-based (aquatic and/or terrestrial) flux methodology is strongly desired; experience and willingness to learn new techniques and methodologies is required.
Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, written, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to project implementation.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The salary range is $50,000-55,000. WHRC offers a very generous benefits package. This is a two-year appointment with the potential to extend.
