Office of Sustainability Opportunities

LEAF Outreach Team

The Office of Sustainability seeks interns to support the implementation of the LEAF Outreach Team at the University of Maryland. Your primary goal will be to “LEAF Out” across campus at special events, games, gatherings and tabling opportunities to promote and reward green practices on our campus.

Green Office Assistant

The Office of Sustainability seeks an intern to support the implementation of the University of Maryland Green Office Program. The Green Office program rewards and recognizes offices for taking steps to become more sustainable.

Measurement and Assessment Intern

This position will work closely with a Project Manager on data collection and analysis to show trends in the number of sustainability courses, sustainability-related community service, campus water use, paper consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, popularity of alternative transportation, recycling rate, and other categories.

Writing and Communications Intern

A Writing and Communications Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability's online presence and promote campus sustainability efforts.

Graphic Design Intern

A Graphic Design Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability's on and off-campus identity and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities include developing graphics, layouts, flyers, logos, brochures and content for the campus sustainability website.

Video Production Intern

The Office of Sustainability is seeking a Video Production Intern to enhance the online presence and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities will include documenting and promoting campus sustainability news, events, and programs through video.

Photography Intern

A Photography Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability's on and off-campus identity and better promote campus sustainability efforts. This position includes taking photographs at campus sustainability events, editing, organizing, and utilizing photos throughout promotional material for the office.

Sustainability Advisors

The Office of Sustainability is seeking Sustainability Advisors to teach freshmen about sustainability and how they can become more involved in sustainable initiatives on campus.

On-Campus Opportunities

TerpService Days

Individuals or groups of students are encouraged to register for our TerpService Day program for 2017-2018. TerpService Days are single Saturdays of service in the local community. The day includes issue education, direct service with local partners, and reflection. Breakfast, lunch, and any supplies for volunteers are included! We have limited capacity at each site, so it pays to register early! To register, students should log into OrgSync and then follow this link: go.umd.edu/tsd to select a site and fill out a form. TerpService Day dates for next fall are: Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 21, Nov. 4, and Nov. 18.

Latino Community Liaison Internship

A Latino Community Liaison Intern is needed to participate in events and provide the Office of Community Engagement staff with administrative and executive support in the implementation of projects that harness UMD resources to enhance quality of life in Prince George’s County, MD.

Digital Media & Video Production Intern

Farmers Market Intern

The Farmers Market Intern will assist the Farmers Market Manager through a 10-hour a week internship program available in the Summer and/or Fall 2017.

Arborist Intern

By working closely with the staff of the Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the intern will gain experience in many aspects of landscape facility maintenance, sustainability, and environmental impact.

Campus Food Gardens Intern

The intern will focus on edible gardening and will be responsible for maintenance and communication tasks for the Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

Horticultural Intern

The intern will learn skills in customer service, multi-tasking, trouble-shooting/problem-solving, adapting to different situations, researching, coordination at events, creating and maintaining inventories, editing promotional materials, communication, organization, time management, and event management while assisting with all aspects of Arboretum work.

Campus Pantry Internship

The mission of the UMD Campus Pantry is to alleviate food hardship among UMD-College Park students, faculty and staff by providing emergency food to University of Maryland College Park students, faculty, and staff in need.

Communications Intern, Women in Engineering Program

The Women in Engineering Program is seeking a Communications Intern to help strengthen WIE’s online presence. The Communications Intern will collaborate with the Assistant Director for Outreach and Recruitment to develop and implement a strategy for social media usage and will help to build and maintain a WIE Blog. The purpose of these efforts is to promote the important role of women in the field of engineering and to recruit and retain women into the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland.

The Leader of Sustainability will lead the development and execution of a strategy to improve the company’s performance as a responsible and sustainable business.

Online Communications

If you have skills in online communications, simple web development, and/or web production platforms, and you want to make a difference in the world, check out this internship.

Canvasser

As a canvasser with Fund for the Public Interest, you’ll work out of a campaign office in one of a dozen cities across the country. You’ll go out into communities, knocking on doors and talking to people about the issues to raise awareness, build our membership, and raise money for the organizations we work with.

Field Manager

In addition to canvassing every day, Field Managers are more involved in recruiting, motivating and training their fellow canvassers to hit our goals. They also have additional responsibilities to set performance goals, map out canvassing territories, keep good financial records, and help implement the non-canvassing aspects of the campaign (such as media, coalition building and petitioning).

Policy Intern

American Forests’ Policy team develops the organization’s positions on forest conservation issues, directs the advocacy engagement activities and manages the government relations of the organization.

Communications and Marketing Intern

American Forests’ Communications & Marketing department has a hand in all of American Forests communications channels — publications (Loose Leaf blog and American Forests magazine) and digital content (web, email and social media). In addition, it is responsible for all publicity activities related to the organization, as well as creating marketing materials. Interns in this department will have the opportunity to assist on projects related to all of these items.

Government Relations Intern

Do you want to preserve our National Parks, wilderness areas, and refuges for future generations? Are you interested in participating in the process of designating and protecting  public lands?  If so, the Government Relations team at The Wilderness Society (TWS) might be a great place for you!

Coalition for Smarter Growth Internships

The Coalition for Smarter Growth is seeking volunteer interns to work with and learn from our small and committed staff this fall, starting at the end of August or early September. No salary, alas – just valuable, stimulating, impactful volunteer work, and a crash course in smart growth policy, advocacy, communications, and coalition building.

Communications Intern

Students looking to burnish their public relations, writing and journalism skills will find our Communications Department to be a fast-paced, high-energy place where they can learn about the environmental community and how The Wilderness Society works to protect the country’s most important public lands and natural resources.

Transportation Policy Intern

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Policy team has an opening for a two to four-month Transportation Policy Intern. The active-transportation movement continues to grow, and there is an opportunity to expand our partners in the movement. State funding for transportation presents a new and growing area of opportunity to secure additional funding for trails, walking and biking. This internship is an opportunity to help grow the movement and influence state level policy.

Grameen Foundation's Volunteer Program

Grameen Foundation’s Marketing and Communications team seeks an intern to assist us in effectively communicating our work, mission and goals to external stakeholders, the international development community and the general public.

Sustainability Intern

The Sustainability Intern will be responsible for helping Enviva fulfill its vision of providing renewable fuels that improve the environmental profile of energy generation by conducting a data quality assurance and validation project related to Enviva’s Track & Trace forest supply chain tracking program.

Sierra Club - Maryland Chapter Internships

The Maryland Sierra Club offers many internship and volunteer opportunities. Conveniently located on Route 1, students can take advantage of the diverse openings in office management, administration, web design, environmental advocacy, environmental news reporting, politics, communications, marketing, outdoor education, advertising, publications, and research.

Facilities Intern

The Natural Resources Defense Council is seeking an intern to work with the Administration/Facilities Department in our DC office. The intern will work on many facilities management and sustainability projects.

Events Intern

The Post-Landfill Action Network is seeking a student with a passion for large event organizing and the skills to coordinate a group of volunteers to help run our 4th annual Students for Zero Waste Conference!

Green America's Green Business Network® Intern

Working alongside the Green Business Network's Digital Products Director and Membership Marketing Manager, this internship will primarily focus on migrating their Green Business Network subsite and member database into a new content management system (Drupal).

The Children's Environmental Health Network Internships

The Children's Environmental Health Network (CEHN) is a national multi-disciplinary organization whose mission is to protect the developing child from environmental health hazards and promote a healthier environment. They accept one intern from each of the following three areas each fall and spring semester and over the summer; the: 1) CEHN General Internship, 2) Carol Stroebel Policy and Health Education Internship, and 3) Eco-Healthy Child Care® Internship.

WRAG’s Philanthropy Fellowships

Undergraduate students in Public Policy may apply for the position with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Preference will be given to students majoring in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation. Graduate students in Public Policy may apply for any of the ten open positions. Preference will be given to students specializing or doing a focus in Nonprofit Management and Leadership.

The Roddenberry Fellowship

The Roddenberry Foundation is awarding a total of $1 million to 20 activists, changemakers and community organizers from across the US to enter a 12-month fellowship program, which will commence in January 2018.
