The University Career Center has made the following alterations and provisions for the period between March 23 – May 22.  These measures have been adopted to maximize the health and safety of students and visiting employers, and minimize as much as possible the disruption to career assistance.

• All in-person career advising will be converted to virtual appointments. Drop-in hours are suspended. Students may schedule individual virtual appointments through Careers4Terps.  Click on "Request a Career Advising Appointment" on the Careers4Terps homepage. Once the appointment is scheduled, the career advisor will reach out with additional information of how they will meet virtually (i.e. zoom, google hangouts, webex, phone, etc.). 
• All in-person career events, workshops, employer events, and employer information sessions are suspended.  Some career and employer events may be rescheduled for later in the semester, or will be held virtually. The Career Center will post announcements about virtual events through the events calendar of our website.
• We are aware of the disruption and concern that the COVID-19 crisis may pose to students’ career plans, especially for those currently involved in internships, seeking summer opportunities, or transitioning into the workforce full time after graduation. The Center will maintain a special webpage with tips and resources to help navigate the job or internship search during the COVID-19 crisis.
• Encourage the use of LinkedIn Learning. UMD students, have free access to LinkedIn Learning, an online learning service that can help professionals learn a variety of skills to achieve their personal and professional goals. The Career Center have identified a few LinkedIn Learning Modules that can assist students in their career pursuits.

Biological Science Technician - Mammoth Cave National Park (KY)

The National Park Service is hiring a full-time GS-9 Biotech position to work with the Inventory and Monitoring Program stationed at Mammoth Cave National Park (Kentucky). The employee will primarily be responsible for overseeing summer cave bats monitoring (via nocturnal emergence counts) and administrative/data management elements of the cave bats monitoring program at 4 national park units (in AL, GA, KY, TN and VA). Other activities will include supporting: forest vegetation monitoring, winter cave bats monitoring, cave crickets monitoring, cave aquatic biota monitoring, and other network vital signs monitoring programs. Fieldwork will likely include navigating through woods after sunset; crawling, climbing, and moving through constricted cave passages (vertical caving too); and hiking off trail.

Maryland Sea Grant Undergraduate Multimedia Internship - MD

Summary: This 10-week summer internship will offer science communication and multimedia production training with our communications team at Maryland Sea Grant. We are seeking student applicants who are excited about helping to translate scientific topics related to the Chesapeake and Maryland Coastal Bays, and their watersheds.

This internship is part of the National Sea Grant Community-Engaged Undergraduate Internship Program.

The overarching goal of this internship program is to broaden participation in marine and coastal professions by providing training and mentorship to the next generation of scientists, decision makers, and citizens. The program will do so by recruiting, retaining, and engaging diverse students in place-based research, extension, education, and/or communication that respects and integrates local ways of knowing. As such, we encourage applications from students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, individuals from minority serving institutions, and individuals from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds that have inhibited their ability to pursue a career in STEM.

Natural Resource Intern
The Montgomery County Department of Parks seeks either a graduate or undergraduate level Natural Resource Intern in the Resource Analysis Section of the Park Planning and Stewardship Division to help manage the stewardship of 457 miles of streams, 26,000 acres of forest and more than 500 lakes, ponds and stormwater management facilities and devices in the 36,000 acre park system. Full-time 1-year research assistant at GW in coastal ecology - D.C.

I am searching for a full-time research assistant to join my lab in summer 2020 to assist in the set-up, maintenance, and break down of wetland plant ecology field experiments and vegetation monitoring campaigns. The research assistant will help in other stages of research: developing protocols, managing data, and processing plant and soil samples in the laboratory. The research assistant will prepare and run carbon and nitrogen analyses of plant tissue samples in the lab.

Requirements: Fieldwork can be physically taxing. Applicants must be able to hike to field sites, spend hours in hot and buggy conditions, and lift up to 50 lbs. The Gedan Lab at The George Washington University investigates the response of coastal and marine species and ecosystems to global changes in climate, sea level, nutrient availability, and invasive species. We focus on conservation-priority, shallow, marine ecosystems, especially tidal marsh. We are interested in marsh migration and the conversion of natural and human-dominated uplands, as well as the novel ecosystems and interactions occurring in transitioning coastal areas. Established field sites are in the estuaries and coastal bays of the Mid-Atlantic, including the Virginia Coast Reserve, an NSF Long Term Ecological Research site. The lab is located in GWU's interdisciplinary science building in downtown Washington, DC, across the street from the Foggy Bottom Metro station.

Short term Aquatic Biologist - OR

Aquatic Biologist I (two 3-month positions; one 2-month position) needed to conduct aquatic ecology surveys on public and private forest lands.

Duties include backpack electrofishing, collection of macro invertebrate and periphyton samples, habitat surveys, and working closely with primary investigators. Experience with ecology field work and interest in aquatic ecology is desired. Applicants should be comfortable navigating in remote backcountry settings and be able to work as a team member under difficult field conditions. Overnight camping is expected.

Position extends from mid-June to mid-September 2020 or July to August 2020.

Paid Summer Internship for Grassland Research - SD and WI

The Lemoine Lab at Marquette University is hiring three interns for summer 2020 (early May - late August) to work on an NSF-funded project examining the role of insect herbivores in grasslands. Interns will be responsible for maintaining and implementing the main project, as well as conducting independent research projects. Duties include manual construction of drought shelters including use of power tools, insect collections, plant identification and collections, soil respiration measurements via incubation, and plant gas exchange measurements using a LICOR 6800. Undergraduate interns will primarily assist full-time technicians and graduate students. Field sites are in Custer State Park, South Dakota and Milwaukee, WI.

Compensation: $3,000 stipend for the summer. Housing is provided in South Dakota and Milwaukee.

Qualifications:
Ideal applicants have a strong interest in ecology, plant physiology, entomology or other related field and are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. Applicants must have the ability and willingness to work outdoors in remote grasslands, handle soil, plants, and insects, and endure log field days with adverse weather conditions. Strong work ethic, exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, and a current drivers license are required.

The Wetland Ecosystems Research Lab is looking for an individual to help with all aspects of research in mangrove, freshwater marsh and tree island ecosystems.

Position available at the end of the Spring Semester 2020. Candidate must have a BS degree in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences or Earth Sciences. Candidate must be able to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team under the difficult weather conditions often found in South Florida. Organizational and problem solving skills are essential. The position will involve field activities working with wetland vegetation, soils, and water quality instrumentation, including multiparameter sondes, and troubleshooting equipment at remote field sites. Laboratory activities include sample preparation and processing according to standard protocols. Candidate will help download, enter, and perform quality assurance on data, as well as contribute to report writing and graphical presentation of data. Demonstrated experience operating field vehicles (trucks with trailers, airboats, and marine boats) is preferred. The preferred candidate will also have open availability, a keen willingness to learn, and take initiative and pride in daily activities. Some of the tasks require carrying heavy equipment and maintaining lab and field equipment. Previous use of Excel and statistical or graphical analysis packages and GIS is also preferred.

Carbon farming laboratory assistant - UC Davis

Job Summary 
Under the direct supervision of Working Lands Innovation Center (WLIC), Program manager and/or the John Muir Institute of the Environment Director assist with leading activities for this new multi-stakeholder consortium focused on testing the carbon and crop benefits of soil amendments in CA's agricultural lands. Primary roles of position as lead technician to monitor crop, soil and greenhouse gas dynamics at ~100 acres of soil amendment demonstration sites that span Coastal CA, the Central Valley, and Imperial Valley. Coordinate and guide research activities, assuring data quality and adhering to university health and safety policies and protocols. Field and laboratory responsibilities include; soil sampling agricultural fields to at least 1-meter by soil auger and greenhouse gas collection from automated chambers. Focusing on measuring carbon sequestration rates (inorganic and organic carbon), greenhouse gas reductions (CO2, N2O, CH4), soil health indicators, crop yields and forage biomass, crop nutrition, and nutrient and water use efficiency. Mentor, train and supervise undergraduates on policies and procedures for field and lab processes.

CLI’s mission is to combine scientific rigor with community wisdom to help secure a vibrant and healthy future for people and wildlife. The goal is to provide local land use planners with insights into the potential future of the region as informed by conservation science. In this way, CLI provides relevant information for supporting strategic decision making that balances the diverse needs of people and the environment that supports them.

Learning Objectives:
In this internship, the selected intern will learn, expand, and refine skills essential for community outreach - including event planning, logistics, and conservation communication - by assisting with the execution of CLI’s communications strategy and preparation of stakeholder meetings throughout late spring/summer. The intern will gain first-hand insight into how science is communicated, especially in the context of influencing policy. They will have the opportunity to meet individuals from a variety of NGOs and government agencies and learn how these different groups interact with each other. The intern will also be able to improve their skills in public speaking, writing and design by contributing to outreach communications materials and presentations. The intern’s work/schedule will be active and diverse, ranging from digital to interpersonal communications requiring travel.

Skill Building Opportunities:
Interns will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills and experience in community outreach by:
-Communicating with a network of current project stakeholders
-Searching for new stakeholders and integrating them into the project network
-Collaborating in the coordination of meetings, including developing presentation materials and keeping meeting minutes
-Helping draft and define communications strategy to inform stakeholders and the public about project initiatives and results
-Seeking out opportunities to share project initiatives and results with NGOs and academic organizations
-Traveling for interpersonal partnership-building meetings with communications lead
