Conservation Land Management PAID Internships - VA

Position: Conservation Land Management Internships (7-month appointment)

Location: Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), Front Royal, VA

Description: Two interns are needed to engage in land management activities at 3200 acre research facility in Front Royal, VA. The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) manages its lands for sustainability, control of invasive plant species, and the restoration of native species. Land management interns would assist with maintenance of ongoing research projects and set-up new projects such as surveys of plants, mammals and birds. They will also help revise the center's land use plan. SCBI is a conservation research center with research labs in conservation ecology and the captive breeding of endangered species. A large corps of interns live on-site and participate in lectures and seminars around major conservation issues. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree related to natural resources, ecology or environmental sciences. Must have a valid driver's license and able to pass a federal background check. Experience with machinery and techniques of land management, as well as GIS, desired. Must be intent on furthering your conservation knowledge and working with a diverse group of scientists and land managers.

Duration, stipend and location:
The 7-month position would start around April 1st and has a monthly stipend of up to $1,500 per month. The internship location will be at SCBI in Front Royal, VA. SCBI’s mission is to advance conservation of biological diversity. In meeting the Smithsonian Institution's mandate, SCBI increases knowledge through investigations of threatened species, habitats and communities, and disseminates knowledge through advance studies, professional training and public outreach.
