UMD's SGA Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) is accepting entries for its visual arts contest about fossil fuel divestment.  By pressuring the University System of Maryland to "divest", we ask that they remove its $71 million invested in dirty energy sources like coal, oil and natural gas and redirect those funds into renewable energy companies. Art submissions must relate to divestment, "dirty money", or other ideas regarding our environment, energy, economics, power, or justice (for more info please see: http://umdsgassc.wixsite.com/umdssc/divestment). All student submissions will be showcased at the SSC's Divestment event on October 27, 2016. Contest winners will receive a gift certificate to a local College Park business.

Description

A postgraduate research project training opportunity is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW). This appointment will be served with the Office of Science and Technology in Washington, DC.

The participant will be engaged in science and policy support on the review of state water quality criteria development, especially on water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life. She/he will also be involved the development of technical and policy materials related to adoption of water quality criteria and other water quality standards issues.

The participant will be part of a multi-disciplinary and/or cross-program team on any given project or issue. The participant will be involved in a range of activities supporting EPA’s Water Quality Standards Program, with a particular emphasis on ambient water criteria (including review of state developed water quality criteria). The participant will be trained to: (1) provide support to states and EPA Regions on review of state adopted water quality criteria, including site-specific criteria; (2) coordinate with HECD in science policy analysis to support water quality criteria development and implementation; (3) produce technical and policy reports and documents related to water quality standards issues arising in Regions; (4) develop and deliver training programs for states or tribes on the Water Quality Standards Program issues; and (5) assemble data and information and developing materials and reports for EPA staff concerning biological, chemical, and other scientific aspects of the Water Quality Standards Program.

The participant will learn about the role of water quality standards in achieving the goals of the Clean Water Act, and the relationship between standards and related core Clean Water Act programs such as the NPDES permit program and the Section 303(d) listing and TMDL programs. The participant will learn how to evaluate state developed criteria to determine their protectiveness in light of Clean Water Act requirements. In addition, the participant will gain familiarity with relevant EPA regulations and guidance documents. The project will provide excellent exposure to: (1) a broad range of water pollution control technical and policy issues; (2) the process of applying technical data and information to policy development; (3) interpretation of statutory and regulatory language and its application to state-specific water quality standards proposals and submissions; and (4) synthesizing technical and policy information for presentation to EPA senior managers and appropriate stakeholder groups, including honing the skill of communicating complex scientific or technical information to a non-technical audience.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a master’s or doctoral degree within five years of the desired starting date or must be a student currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university pursuing a graduate degree. Proof of enrollment will be required each semester. Desired degree discipline in biology, environmental science, environmental management or policy or environmental engineering.

The appointments are full-time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participants will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend range is $53,435 to $64,650 depending on the educational level.  Funding may be made available to reimburse the participants’ travel expenses to present the results of their research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or health insurance. The participants must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participants do not become EPA employees.

The Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Maryland, College Park and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications from qualified individuals for a non-tenure track faculty position as an Assistant Research Scientist.

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Research Scientist will be required to assist the Principal Investigator with successful execution of a research program focused on exploring host-pathogen interactions during rotavirus infection. Specific responsibilities include designing, performing, and analyzing experiments aimed at understanding mechanisms used by rotavirus to manipulate innate immune responses, including antagonizing pathways necessary for the expression of interferon and interferon-stimulated gene products and for P13K/mTor activation. Experiments will require experience in the preparation and mutagenesis of mammalian expression vectors, transfection of mammalian cells with expression vectors, and assay of protein expression using luciferase reporter systems and Western blot assay. Additional and general job responsibilities include presentation of scientific data, preparation of manuscripts, growth and titering of rotaviruses, and maintenance of cell cultures.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in Biology or Related Field

The successful candidate will have a background in Virology, Microbiology, Immunology, and/or Molecular Biology.

Preferred Requirements:

Highly motivated and creative scientist with an interest in elucidating the molecular mechanisms used by rotavirus to antagonize innate immune pathways. Ideal candidate will have strong letters of recommendation and a record of research publication in high quality journals.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This is a 12-month, term appointment, 40 hours per week position. The position will work in support of the Carroll County 4-H Youth Development Extension Program. The Educator will provide coordination and programmatic support for Environmental Sciences and 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (4-H STEM) activities in Carroll County, including collaboration on educational programs among partners, outreach to clientele, and related activities. Successful candidate should demonstrate a willingness to bring innovative ideas and increased collaboration across program areas in Carroll County to help support youth/volunteer development. The position will be located in the University of Maryland Extension-Carroll County Office in Westminster, Maryland.

Responsibilities:

 Develop, implement, and evaluate an informal educational program in 4-H youth development based on the Maryland 4-H Youth Development model, focusing in the areas of environmental science, natural resources and the mechanical sciences.
 Cooperate with county 4-H Extension faculty in providing leadership in the development of educational environmental stewardship programs for youth delivered through the county 4-H residential camping program and 4-H shooting sports program.
 Develop, implement and evaluate school enrichment opportunities (in-school and after-school) with an emphasis on, but not limited to, 4-H STEM education including robotics and environmental education enrichment.
 Create opportunities for youth to demonstrate and evaluate their project knowledge and recognize youth for their accomplishments and achievements.
 Recruit and train adult volunteers and teen leaders to conduct and provide educational programs for the Carroll County 4-H program.
 Expand the 4-H Club program by assisting with creation of new clubs and recruiting new members
through community outreach opportunities.
 Take advantage of educational opportunities in youth development and assigned subject areas to
maintain an accurate updated base of knowledge in these matters.
 Maintain awareness of changes in trends and technology in assigned subject areas to better service
clientele.
 Work cooperatively with other county Extension faculty, Extension Advisory Council, 4-H members and volunteers to identify the educational needs of the county’s diverse clientele.

Qualifications

Required –

 Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Education or related field
 Demonstrate effectiveness and experience teaching youth and/or volunteers in a community setting
 Applicants must be self-motivated, flexible, innovative, and resourceful with skills and experience in conducting community-based education programs

Description

The Health Department is currently seeking highly qualified individuals to fill four (4) Environmental Health Specialist I/II positions, grade A -18/21, for the Food Protection/Policy Program, within its Environmental Health and Disease Control Division.

These are entry-level to full performance professional, inspection, and investigative positions, whereby the incumbents will conduct pre-opening and routine inspections at MGM, National Harbor, and other facilities in Prince George's County; administer comprehensive food inspections to ensure compliance with applicable County, State, and Federal laws/regulations; and respond to citizens' complaints using knowledge, appropriate investigator skills, office procedures, and forms to document, produce, and resolve health code violations.

Some assignments involve recurring exposure to dirt, grease, various chemicals, cold, heat and adverse weather conditions, which may require employees to wear safety equipment; and may subject employees to long periods of standing and/or walking, repeated bending, stooping, crouching, and lifting or carrying objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds. Work is performed under close supervision of a higher level Environmental Health Specialist or designated supervisor.

Incumbents conduct comprehensive monitoring and follow-up inspections in a timely manner to determine compliance with State and Local regulations; respond to citizens' complaints using knowledge of appropriate investigative skills and office procedures; ensure violations are documented thoroughly, accurately, and legibly using the proper codes and Health Department's forms; conduct change of ownership inspections and remodel inspections using appropriate regulations and investigative skills to approve new facilities and/or equipment for use; ensure correspondence to the facility owner(s) or management are accurate and timely; tracks the status of compliance inspections, new facilities, and change(s) in ownership are maintained; and performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
