Description
The Health Department is currently seeking highly qualified individuals to fill four (4) Environmental Health Specialist I/II positions, grade A -18/21, for the Food Protection/Policy Program, within its Environmental Health and Disease Control Division.

These are entry-level to full performance professional, inspection, and investigative positions, whereby the incumbents will conduct pre-opening and routine inspections at MGM, National Harbor, and other facilities in Prince George's County; administer comprehensive food inspections to ensure compliance with applicable County, State, and Federal laws/regulations; and respond to citizens' complaints using knowledge, appropriate investigator skills, office procedures, and forms to document, produce, and resolve health code violations.

Some assignments involve recurring exposure to dirt, grease, various chemicals, cold, heat and adverse weather conditions, which may require employees to wear safety equipment; and may subject employees to long periods of standing and/or walking, repeated bending, stooping, crouching, and lifting or carrying objects weighing over fifty (50) pounds. Work is performed under close supervision of a higher level Environmental Health Specialist or designated supervisor.

Incumbents conduct comprehensive monitoring and follow-up inspections in a timely manner to determine compliance with State and Local regulations; respond to citizens' complaints using knowledge of appropriate investigative skills and office procedures; ensure violations are documented thoroughly, accurately, and legibly using the proper codes and Health Department's forms; conduct change of ownership inspections and remodel inspections using appropriate regulations and investigative skills to approve new facilities and/or equipment for use; ensure correspondence to the facility owner(s) or management are accurate and timely; tracks the status of compliance inspections, new facilities, and change(s) in ownership are maintained; and performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

The Environmental Health & Disease Control Division offers an array of benefits for its Environmental Health Specialists. Such benefits include but are not limited to: County vehicles to conduct inspections, Alternative Work Schedule (AWS), yearly shoe allowances, and in-house training to prepare employees for the Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) Exam.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health, Environmental, Physical, Biological or Engineering Sciences; plus a minimum of one (1) year professional level experience in environmental health investigatory and enforcement work. EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT CLEARLY AND CONVINCINGLY DEMONSTRATES THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.

Upon selection, applicant must:

1. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

2. Possess and maintain a registered Environmental Health Specialist License, Health Specialist In-Training Certificate, or Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Maryland State Board of Environmental Health Specialists, and in conjunction with the State law. Incumbent must maintain a current registration, which may include continuing education requirements.
