Cleanup event in D.C. - April 21

If you have ever been to the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington DC, one of the first things you will notice is the litter seen on and around many street corners.  An otherwise lovely community, Columbia Heights faces heavy littering much of the time, which is why on April 21st there will be a Clean Up event through UMD.

A quick, eco-aside: These items are not just an eyesore; they're an environmental hazard. Anything that ends up in a DC gutter makes its way into the Anacostia River, then the Potomac, and eventually, the ocean. And as I've learned in the past six months at OC, ocean trash (plastic, especially) is no joke. It chokes or starves animals, it carries fatal disease to corals (the ocean's rainforests!), and ends up on our dinner plates

Call for Proposals - Pepsi Enhancement Funds Fall 2018

Each semester the Review Committee for the Pepsi Enhancement Fund send out a call for proposals for program funding.  Now is the time to submit proposals for programs and events that will occur during the 2018 fall semester, Monday, August 27, 2018 through Friday, December 7, 2018.

A $50,000 fund, generously provided by PepsiCo, will be used to underwrite the cost of programs that broadly affect the campus population. For spring 2018, UMD received 158 proposals and was  able to award 87 grants. Some of the programs receiving funding include the Terrapin Tango Festival, Arts Fest 2018, Grad Research Appreciation Day, and Terrapin Triathlon and 5K. Each of the proposals will be measured by the following criteria:

1. Will the event/program contribute to the creation of campus community?

2. Will the event/program appeal to a wide audience of campus citizens?

3. Will the event/program contribute to the advancement of the academic mission of the University?

4. Will the event/program enhance the co-curriculum, enlarging opportunities for leadership, cultural and social exchange, and service to the University and broader community?

Submit a proposal online at https://stampunion.umd.edu/pepsi/  prior to Monday, March 5, 2018 by 5:00 p.m. All proposals must be completed online and a response is required to all of the questions detailed on the form. The Pepsi Review Committee will review all proposals by the end of April. Departments and organizations will be notified of their award status following the Review Committee meeting and the funds will be available at the start of the fall semester. Please note, in order to accommodate the greatest number of groups in our funding process, a sponsoring organization may not submit more than two (2) proposals per semester.
