Fulbright Summer Institutes for US Undergraduates (US citizens)

US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for US citizens to come to the UK. These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (Us citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.

Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills. Please note: this program gives preference to students who have had little or no study or travel outside of the US.

The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs.  This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance. 

Summer Institutes available for US students:

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be US Citizens; have a GPA of 3.7 or higher; be 18 or older; have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes. Please note: this program gives preference to students who have had little or no study or travel outside of the US.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship - For Pell Grant Recipients / US Citizens

Are you thinking about studying abroad in summer 2018 of academic year 2018-19? Are you a US CITIZEN receiving a PELL GRANT (a federal need-based educational grant)?

Learn about the GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP, which provides up to $5,000 for study abroad students with financial need who receive Pell Grants.  In the last two years, 58 University of Maryland students won Gilman Scholarships—a 45% acceptance rate!  The deadline to apply for summer 2018 and fall/academic year 2018-19 awards is March 6, 2018.

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers 1,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 to students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies world-wide. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Programs must be at least 3 weeks in length.

Conservation Legacy Internship Opportunity at National Capital Parks-East

Here is some news about an exciting internship opportunity with the National Parks Service in Washington DC as a Resource Management Assistant.  This term for this position lasts for 47 weeks starting as early as the month of December.  Compensation is $510/week for full-time interns (5 days a week).

  • AmeriCorps Award:

This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program.  Value of education award is $5,775.00 (pre-tax).

  • Educational Status:

Bachelor’s degree in related field such as environmental studies, community/regional planning, recreation management, natural resource management, historic preservation, geography, or landscape architecture.

  • Start Date:

Projected start date is December but is contingent on passing background investigation.

  • Specific training:

Hands-on mentored work experience; individual training available to meet specific interests and needs.

Specifics about position:
 The Steward will be focused on resource management at the park.  The Steward will learn about the NPS mission and its role in the protection of cultural and natural resources; work collaboratively with park resource management staff throughout the permitting process, which will include assisting in National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and NPS compliance and monitoring; and obtain experience in working in high stress environments.
 The Steward will be instrumental in ensuring that park resources are protected during the 47-week program.  Monitoring of park permits will assist in protecting park resources and mitigate any adverse impacts. With an increase in monitoring activities, the Steward will obtain a better understanding of the park sites, but more importantly will contribute in ensuring the protection of the park natural and cultural resources.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  •  Permit monitoring/Resource Protection
  • Assist with Cultural Resource Management (CRM) compliance activities
  • Assist with determination of potential natural and cultural resource impacts from proposed project activities, and work with park staff to determine if proposed activities can be permitted
  • Assist with review of resource management reports and documents
  • Enter compliance data into NPS Planning, Environment & Public Comment (PEPC); complete web-based PEPC training, and work with park staff to learn how to use the database effectively
  • Assist with park boundary issues

  • Ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to speak comfortably with a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural audience
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people and develop strong partner networks.
  • Great customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic environment and adjust priorities quickly.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Self-directed and motivated.
  • Physically able to bend, stoop, crouch, lift (up to 15 lbs.), frequently walk, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Love/passion for the outdoors and willingness to explore.
  • Working knowledge of and experience participating in outdoor recreational activities (i.e. climbing, hiking, biking, paddling, etc.).

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and communicate to supervisor when assistance is needed/desired.
  • Possession of a current valid driver’s license
  • Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • This position will be required to submit quarterly reports and a final report during their term of service
