Business Operations Intern

Lowell, MA

NEIWPCC is seeking an intern to assist our Business Operations Division with administrative functions at our headquarters office. This intern will gain experience in a variety of business management processes and procedures that ensure smooth operations of our office and support our environmental efforts throughout the Northeast.

What You’ll Do

As an intern for NEIWPCC, you’ll work alongside full-time staff that provide administrative and clerical support for the operations of our headquarters office. You will assist with collecting and organizing information for various NEIWPCC programs, support in-office and external events, manage data and records, and provide general office support such as sorting mail, scanning documents, organizing common areas, and helping to maintain in-house IT equipment. You’ll also get the chance to work with other functional groups within NEIWPCC, directly supporting environmental programs or business processes that fall under other divisions.

What You Bring / Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will be a business administration or related major with at least two years of college, with demonstrated leadership, communication, coordination, and organizational skills. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and experience operating office machines (such as photocopiers, scanners, phones, and computers) is essential. Practical business experience is a plus. Candidates with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent.

Logistics

This is a seasonal NEIWPCC internship based out of NEIWPCC’s Headquarters office in Lowell, MA. The intern will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week, and the position is expected to begin in early June and extend through August, with some flexibility and with the potential to extend beyond September for the right candidate. This position is not eligible for telework. A valid driver’s license and access to own transportation is required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

Pay

The anticipated hourly pay range is $15-17, depending on experience and education.

Seasonal Invasive Species Intern

Providence, RI

NEIWPCC is seeking a seasonal intern to assist with invasive species prevention activities during the summer of 2023. This is a great opportunity to learn how to coordinate and engage volunteers around solving environmental challenges in Rhode Island.

What You’ll Do

As an intern for NEIWPCC, you’ll work alongside full-time staff to assist with the implementation of a community-based habitat restoration project focused on the removal of water chestnut in the Blackstone and Ten Mile Watersheds. You will coordinate water chestnut pulling events by recruiting and training volunteers, tracking volunteer data, and maintaining materials and supplies. You will also produce informational materials and develop social media posts for the project, act as a liaison between state and municipal partners, and assist with permitting requirements.

What You Bring / Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will be a high school graduate with 1-2 years of college education in biology, environmental science, chemistry, or related natural science field. Experience coordinating volunteers and working with diverse communities, as well as excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills are needed. Experience with canoeing, kayaking, or light watercraft is desirable. Some understanding of Spanish preferable. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors, able to swim, and physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. Logistics

This is a seasonal NEIWPCC internship based out of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management office located in Providence, RI. Duties will be performed in office and outdoor field settings, with need for local and regional travel to participate in related meetings and events in a variety of outdoor conditions. This intern will be expected to work 35 hours per week, with some flexibility. This internship is anticipated to begin late May or early June and will extend into August. Occasional weekend and evening work is anticipated to oversee events in June and July. This position is not eligible for telework. A valid driver’s license and access to own transportation is required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.

Salary

The anticipated hourly payrate for this position starts at $18.25.

Environmental Engineer – Capital Replacement Program 

Kingston, NY

NEIWPCC is seeking a full-time Environmental Engineer to assist in managing the assessment, replacement, and maintenance of certain wastewater treatment infrastructure that is required to be installed and maintained in the New York City water supply watershed. 

What You’ll Do

As a NEIWPCC Environmental Engineer, you will perform site inspections, meet with wastewater treatment plant owners, review contract documents and scopes of work for eligible projects, and coordinate with compliance staff. You will be responsible for preparing and reviewing internal and external progress reports pursuant to the Filtration Avoidance Determination (FAD), Memorandum of Agreement, and other Agency requirements. You will also be responsible for managing multiple databases for tracking and monitoring program accomplishments, contract budgets, project coordination, payments, and related documentation.

 

What You Bring / Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in environmental or civil engineering, or related field and seven years of related experience; knowledge of and experience with the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit program inspection processes, operation of wastewater treatment utilities and facility reconstruction, and experience collaborating with a broad range of stakeholders in implementing environmental programs. Excellent computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets, effective verbal and written communication skills, the ability to perform basic statistical analysis, and the possession of a professional engineer's license and current registration from a State or Territory of the United States are valued. Candidates with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent.

Environmental Analyst - Permit Writer

Albany, NY

NEIWPCC is seeking a full-time Environmental Analyst to serve as a State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) Permit Writer, and to ensure compliance with regulations, polices, and procedures to further protect source water throughout the state.

What You’ll Do

As a NEIWPCC Environmental Analyst, you will become an essential member of the Drinking Water Source Protection Program (DWSP2). You will work with permittees, their representatives, engineers and various members of the public on municipal and industrial wastewater discharge SPDES permits within Source Water Protection areas to ensure SPDES permits are up-to-date and include effluent limitations necessary to protect public water supplies. You will assist with SPDES permit development and permit renewals, review engineering reports, and conduct water quality and effluent evaluations at wastewater treatment facilities. You will also assist with internal DWSP2 coordination to ensure the permitting and other processes include source water protection components.
